Grilled cheese toasts are really popular in the UK and US but in HK, people don’t really eat cheese because the smell is a bit strong for them.
The sudden trend for cheese toasts became popular after the film Food truck was shown because TV/Films are an effective way of brainwashing people in HK, just like Korean food from K-pop/drama.
Unfortunately, the cheese they use in HK is mostly processed cheese or tasteless Mozzarella cheese to keep profits low with a decent cheesy texture with no taste.
It has been really hard to get a decent cheese toast in HK but I managed to get a good one at Big Jo’s if they do it right.
I was excited when I saw photos of grilled cheese sandwiches at KALA but then when I found out it was in Tsuen Wan I forgot about it because it was far and out of place.
Finally tried it because I was in the area.
The tiny joint was looked impressive, just like the grilled cheese joints in the UK.
There were so many choices and they had basil cheese, tomato cheese and lavender cheese which are different colours.
I got the simplest one because I wanted try if the cheese was good.
It was only $26, which is cheap for cheese in Hong Kong but obviously cheaper in the UK because cheese is inexpensive there.
The wait was fairly long and I got my cheese toast in the end.
I was expecting it to be bigger but the toast tasted fairly good, not the disgusting local sweet bread.
Unfortunately the cheese was a bit disappointing and tasteless and the cheese toast lacked a strong cheesey taste but the LOOK, TEXTURE was right.
A good start but not quite there yet if you like cheese but locals will love it because they like cheese that doesn smell or have a strong taste!
