Dogs served here
2019-03-29 233 瀏覽
I am not quite sure how to react but the Chinese culture is always mocked for eating dogs especially in Chi Naaaaaa.
In UK people would always joke and ask if dog meat was served in Chinese Takeaways and restaurants.
When I saw dog on the menu from the flyer I decided to check it out and it didn't really say what it was.
There were bunnies as well which looked like they had German measles.
Well, pretty realistic and they look like a newborn foetuses wobbling about.
Ok, so it wasn't a real pup but some pudding!
Also had the golden abalone ingot which was just jelly with sweetcorn and abalone in it,.
The fish was quite good as it was topped with black bean sauce.
Unfortunately, you get charged tea per person which comes in the form of tea bags with a jar of hot water.

[Review 6951] Someone said "crazy" Chinese food"?? @ 港 (已結業)KONG by Bread & Beast

港 (已結業)KONG by Bread & Beast
灣仔汕頭街1號地舖
G/F, 1 Swatow Street, Wan Chai
https://www.openrice.com/zh/hongkong/review/someone-said-crazy-chinese-food-e3208448
I was checking out the French restaurant on Swatow Street when I saw Kong by Bread and Beast were doing a photo shoot.
Took a look out of curiosity and they were doing a photo shoot for Thanksgiving and Christmas with turkey and delicious pies!!!
While I was looking, this guy came out and said that I should come in and try the "crazy Chinese food" which was a big contrast to Turkey!!!!
{Actually I was more interested in Turkey to be honest!]
The menu was quite interesting so decided to try it anyway.
There were lots of Western dishes with Chinese ingredients and Vice versa such as mac and cheese with Chinese preserved sausages and ricerolls covered in cheese.
The one that I really had to try was the Caesar salad made with fried dace in black bean sauce since I missed the chance to try the fried dace in black bean sauce pizza at some hotel in San po kong.
I couldn't believe how well they went together but I am biased as I just love anything with fried dace that I once requested for fried dace black bean congee and it was damn good.
This dish was inspired by salad with anchovies and capers which was replaced by the fried dace and it worked.
Next were the Brussel sprouts which I hesitated to order as they just looked dark in photos and boy I was wrong.
The photo does not do it any justice.
When you eat them, the surface of the Brussel sprout are crispy but soft inside bursting with tangy lime and fish sauce and you just can't stop eating them.
There were so many dips to choose from like black garlic aioli, strawberry ricotta, fa diu liver pate and bone marrow whip with a choice of scallion bing or ciabatta.
Went for the strawberry ricotta and crispy ciabatta which was quite nice as it was liking having savoury scones with cream and strawberries.
Finished with the cherry kola beef brisket.
Inside the rice roll, there was so much lean beef brisket which is the same stuff they use for the sandwiches during the day.
By day this place is [Bread and Beast] and by night they are [KONG] by Bread and Beast
Bread and Beast have been really successful as I first tried them at Island East Markets a few years ago before they started this restaurant in Wanchai.

[Review 5160] Not just desserts @ 小火焰韓式咖啡餐廳 Aidan Korean Dessert Cafe

Shop 1, 1/F, Kwun Tong View, 410 Kwun Tong Rd, Kwun Tong
https://www.openrice.com/zh/hongkong/review/not-just-desserts-e2562824
I thought this place only served desserts but they have fried chicken and the usual Korean fare.
Here was what we had:
++++++
Fruit ice bar naengmyeon:
2 讚好
Ordered this because it looked pretty on the menu.
I was captivated by the two ice bars with berries in it.
1 讚好
The ice bars were not sweet but savoury which was surprising because it was berries in frozen broth so it didn't ruin the harmony of the noodles with a strange sweetness.
The berries were tart and refreshing which went nicely with the springy noodles.
++++++
Raisin and cereal fried chicken with honey:
The fried chicken was sticky and sweet drizzled with honey and coated with crispy cornflakes and raisins that gave the fried chicken more complexity.
The coating is slightly spicy.
++++++
Beef served on a steel mesh:
The beef had a smokey taste and it was like eating a beef patty tasting like jerky.
++++++
Roasted baby spare ribs with kimchi fried rice and Mozzarella cheese:
I loved the generous melted cheese which helped tone down the spicy kimchi fried rice.
The spare ribs were meaty and juicy.
++++++
Fried chicken with bread and lava cheese:
This was my favourite because it had all my favourite items: fried chicken, crispy bread and CHEESE!~
The fried chicken was not so spicy and it was tender springy pieces of thigh meat which was delicious with the cheesy sauce.
After finishing the cheese and chicken, I was left with delicious crusty bread covered in yummy cheese.
++++++
Sweet potato latte:
For drinks I had the sweet potato latte which was creamy with a natrual sweet potato taste.
++++++
Lemon blue curacao soda:
For those who want to try the inverted bottle drink and don't drink alchohol, this is the solution because they have a non alcoholic lemon blue curacao soda.

[Review 5141] Bling bling donuts @ Buttery Factory
22/03/2016
Buttery Factory
佐治街2-10號銅鑼灣地帶2樓264號舖
Shop 264. 2/F, Causeway Place, 2-10 Great George Street, Causeway Bay
https://www.openrice.com/zh/hongkong/review/bling-bling-donuts-e2557695
Found out about this joint because of the pretty pictures posted on social media.
Basically they are heavily topped donuts with all sorts of confectionery and biscuits such as oreo, bueno bars, green tea biscuits, cakes etc.
They also had savoury donuts as well, which were much nicer because I wasn’t really keen on the biscuits, confectionery and the donut base itself.
The sweet donuts didn’t really impress me as much as the savory donuts but I look forward to reading Silverthoughts comment on this.
+++++++++
Salted caramel donut:
This was quite nice because of the salted caramel syrup but the syrup managed to seep through the tiny hole from the folded box corner.
The chocolate frosting was a bit too hard for my liking.
+++++++++
Peking roast duck:
This was delicious because the pairing of duck, grassy spring onions and bbq sauce never fail but the cream cheese didn't taste nice with the duck but it helped to stick the ingredients to the donut and keep it in shape.

[Review 4177] NOT going to try their savoury stuff EVER again!~ @ 雪糕之森 Ice Cream Gallery

Previously tried their lobster and escargot icecreams at their Kwun Tong branch which were horrible not because it was lobster or escargot but because it was sweet.
I have also tried their sweet icecreams which fared better.
This time they came up with this interesting congee flavour with fried dough sticks.
Before ordering I asked the staff if it was SWEET OR SAVOURY and she said it was definitely not sweet hence I ordered it.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Congee icecream:
The texture was a failure because it was hard and powdery.
When you put the spoon in it, it was crumbled into frozen chalk.
The worst part was the taste because it was so chalky and sweet when I was expecting a savoury taste.
Even if I had a real cold congee it wouldn't be sweet!
Anyway, apart from congee, there were also gingko nuts in the icecream.

KFC, a specialist in Fried chicken now serves American fried dough sticks with soy milk for breakfast, it looks 100% Chinese and does not look American at all!
Anyway, I was curious, so decided to try it.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Fried dough sticks:
Before I tried it, I was impressed because it was hot and freshly fried, it was hygienically wrapped which beats any dough stick at Hong Kong's congee shop unless you go there just when they freshly fry dough sticks.
It is guaranteed to be cleaner too.
The great thing is they will fry them when ordered because people will not go here for these doughsticks so it is going to be fresh.
When the I unwrapped it, the dough stick was quite small.
It was really cute because you could still separate it into two single sticks just like the traditional ones.
Anyway, the taste was delicious, it was chewy inside and crispy outside and you could taste some other spices which you can't taste in Congee shops.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Soy sauce:
It just tasted like the usual soy milk, but it was not too sweet which was good.

[Review 2338] ஜ Seaweed ╬ Chocolate ⇨ Seaweed Chocolate ஜ @ Che Che New York

Che Che New York (已結業)

Shop G14, G/F, K11 Art Mall, 18 Hanoi Road, Tsim Sha Tsui
https://www.openrice.com/zh/hongkong/review/seaweed-chocolate-seaweed-chocolate-e2289555
I have always wanted to go Che Che New York but the confectionary is well hidden!
From the front of the shop and the entrance it appears to be a boutique selling handbags, so unless the bags catch your eyes it is easily missed.
I was attracted by the wrapper for this chocolate bar and it turns out to be seaweed so that was why I got it.
After reading some of the reviews they have other interesting flavours such as chocolate with chili and chocolate with jerky!!
All with nicely designed wrappers with nice illustrations.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Seaweed Chocolate:
Before I broke a piece of chocolate I thought it was just seaweed essence in the chocolate or bits of seaweed embedded in it but when i broke it I was astonished to find layers of it in the middle!
The texture of this chocolate was interesting because it was like eating chocolate wafers.
The chocolate on the outside is gradually melted and swallowed leaving the crispy seaweed.
The taste was quite nice because it was dark chocolate so it was not very sweet with a sudden contrast of saltiness from the seaweed.
The seaweed taste was not that prominent but you could feel it was there because of its crispiness and melt in your mouth texture just like a wafer.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Wrapper and labelling:
Interesting to see that it contains tuna and shrimp!!
Cute puffin!

Restaurant photos:
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Scallop and urchin with rice:
The scallop tasted bitter and the urchin was not that fresh.
It was really different to the product shot too, there were far more herbs sprinkled on the rice and on my bowl there was not much as shown on the photo.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Surf clam:
The surf clam was quite fresh and had a strong metallic taste.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Baked potato covered in salt:
To be honest, I didn't get the point of baking potato in salt but it was fun breaking the hard salt casing!
There was so much salt in the hard casing that it can probably last you for the year if you only add a pinch of salt when you cook!
The potato was rather dry but it came with butter so it tasted really nice.
There was also mentaiko mayonnaise but I felt that it did not taste nice together.
It would have been perfect if they used a proper baking potato then the texture of the potato would be soft and silky inside.
