Best kept secret

There are few delicious hidden Thai joints in Hong Kong and this one is on the Kowloon side.

If only I tried this a few years ago because it was cheaper back then.
Tried the duck noodles which was so damn good because the broth was rich and you can taste the herbs like aniseed that are used to marinate the duck when it is roasted.
There is vat of broth soup which I guess is the duck broth.
The impressive thing was that you get big chunks of edible duck and the broth isn't sweet by default so the noodles taste good.
The pieces of blood jelly in it are also tasty and full of flavour.
Also tried the crispy pork belly with rice.
The quality of the pork belly is just as good as the one in Shitkung but the rice is a million times more delicious.
It was lightly flavoured but moreish.
Can't wait to come back and choose the rice vermicelli with the duck noodles.

Previously tried the Four Seasons cheese tea which was so nice that I decided to get it again and try the berry cheese.
Unfortunately, they ran out of the flat style lids which lets you drink without a straw and used the dome lids which ruined the drinking experience and taste.
The best way of drink cheese drinks or drinks topped with a foam cap/milk cap is to sip it so that you get a mix of tea and the topping in your mouth.
So in this situation, I had to mix the topping and the drink together.
The four seasons tea still tasted good but the berry cheese was too sweet either way.
I definitely do not recommend the berries but the four seasons is still good.

The Shanghai pearl of Lamtin
Competition is fierce for food at Lamtin, there are so many good eateries on this stretch.
Obviously, Little Pearl has to compete with the Thai joint next door as they do some captivating noodles and Hainan chicken.
Little Pearl has two joints, this one is smaller and does not serve the full menu like Kwuntong.
The seating is extremely cramped, you are literally sitting back to back to someone.
In terms of food, I was quite surprised because the dandan noodles were really tasty, the broth was how it should and not sugary sweet or ruined by rancid peanuts.
It also comes with fried chicken which was strangely covered with Thai Sweet chili sauce that ruined it.
The beef noodles were not spicy and the ribs were succulent and meaty.

The star of the show had to be the Xiaolongbao because the skin held together well when it was served to the moment it was cool enough to be eaten.
There was so much soup in the XLB and the skin did not break until you ate it.

The soup inside the dumpling was clear with a strong unami element which went well with the vinegar provided as it balanced the heaviness of the filling.

Perhaps the vinegar was too good because it made me even more hungry.
Drinks are the usual soy bean milk and wintermelon tea.

Will definitely be back for the XLB which is now one of my favourites.

Seriously delicious EGGS!!!

Recently went on a food trip to FOODIN located at Lam Tin.
Wandered into the busy market and saw these delicious looking eggs which were in a nice box that made them captivating.

They were still glistening when I took the lid off so it was good sign and the wine was still on the surface of the egg.
I was impressed when I took the first bite as the egg white was tender and delicate while the egg yolk was not hard boiled.
On top of that there was a strong wine taste that was fragrant without the bitterness.
Definitely delicious but location wise it benefits people living in the area.
They do have a branch in Mong Kok but I don't think they sell these eggs.

Taiwanese GuaBaos

Super Super Congee specializes in Congee and noodles obviously but recently they have been serving some different stuff like the Aniseed noodles a while back and now the GuaBaos!!
They had the usual fluffy white ones late last year and I thought they were quite adventurous with the purple potato guabao but then it is all to do with colouring.
ANYWAY BECAREFUL WHAT YOU ORDER AS THE MAIN POSTER SPECIFIES CHICKEN WHILE THE SMALLER MENU SAYS PORK!!!!

Anyway decided to try it at this new location which is well hidden.
The cashier and restaurant are separated so if you didn't walk over to the restaurant area you won't expect there is seating.

I was just trying it for the sake of the bun, I wasn't expecting it to have a decent pork chop inside as meat just isn't fresh in Hong Kong.
The pork chop was dry and chewy as expected.
As for the bun it was like eating your usual fluffy bun except that it was purple in colour!!!
Overall not worth trying but just great for photos!

Crispy Tofu covered with Salted Egg Yolk Sauce

Tofu is a popular and healthy ingredient in  Hong Kong.
There are so many shops serving it such as Kung Woh which is on the traditional and greasy side.

A few years ago Tofuism was very popular with a modern approach where they had shops everywhere but somehow they started to die down with one or two shops currently remaining.

Trending now is Tofuage where they have two branches at Wong Tai Sin and Lam Tin.

I went to both locations and prices are slightly different because I believe one has dine in and the is a takeaway so they have to adjust prices accordingly.

I visited Lam Tin first and the golden tofu was cheaper, you get 7 pieces for HKD20 while at WTS it is $22 for 6 pieces.
Same goes for the Tofu cheese balls which cost HKD20 here and HKD22 at WTS.
The golden crispy tofu was delicious cubes of fried tofu covered in salty egg yolk paste.

For drinks, I had the chocolate tofu slush which I wouldn't recommend as the original tasted much better after trying it at WTS.
It is basically silky tofu at the bottom which is then topped with tofu slush from the dispenser and if you order flavoured ones you get a squirt of flavoured syrup in the cup.

There are quite a few branches of Prince of Shaomai but they are plotted all over inconvenient locations such as Kai Tin, chuk Yuen etc.Went to the joint at Lam Tin because it was accessible by MTR.
Lam Tin Market has been revamped with these funny red English phone booths.
Unfortunately, they didn't have the squid ink shao mai which was obviously what I went there for.
As I was already bloody there, just got the ordinary Fish Shaomai which are freshly made.\
The shaomai skin tasted quite nice with a springy texture.
They tasted better when they  have cooled down as the texture is more chewy so it depends what texture you prefer and you can taste the fishiness when they are cooler.
Definitely want to come back for the squid ink shaomai but as the franchise is small, they don't even have a dumb number or fb for ppl to find out.

Was in the area so got the white bittermelon juice.
It was a mix of white bittermelon and pear because they always mix items together to save cost and the excuse is the fruit/veg itself isn't juicy enough.
The taste was sweet and bitter.
The pear made it very syrupy and gave it a viscous gritty texture.
Will try something else next time as they are popping up all over the place.

Stopped by for soup as I was in the area.
The Taiwanese Sweet corn soup tastes a little different because it smells sickly sweet with some milk in it.
There are some occasional blended pieces of sweetcorn but not much.
Overall, the dumplings fared better.

This eatery has a funky English name called Oriental Jackson.
Anyway, stopped by randomly because I was hungry.
They serve cart noodles and the best thing is that you can choose rice instead of noodles which makes it more filling.
I had luncheon meat, fishballs and blood jelly.
The fishballs were really good because there was a strong fruit peel taste but probably zero fish in it.
Overall, the food was edible but a little too salty.

Discovered this new pork chop bun at Yoshinoya so decided to try it.
It seems that no one has ordered it before as it was like a new task to them and it took about 20 minutes.
The noodles were too soft.
The pork chop was in a soft sweet bun, there were some onions and salad cream sauce so the taste was rather Hog Kong style but then pork chops buns are from HK!
Worth trying but not my cup of tea.

The next best glutinous rice with Chinese sausage

I always get the glutinous rice whenever I am in LAMTIN.
It did not disappoint because the grains of glutinous rice were soft yet al-dente with the right amount of stickiness.
The spring onions were really good as they helped cut the grease while giving it freshness in every bite.
Extra preserved sausage is optional, being greedy I got extra sausage but found out that there was quite a fair bit of sausage in it so you don't really need to order it.

I was still hungry so decided to get some snacks from here.
Contemplated on getting the spicy shaomai or the sausage.
Decided to get the sausage because I wasn't sure how spicy the sauce was.
Luckily I got the sausage because the sauce was too spicy for me and you can easily get rid of the sauce whereas the shaomai absorbs it.
The chicken sausage was soft and gritty and fiery because of the sauce.

Went past this place three times and wondered whether to try it out or not.
I deeply regretted it because it was a waste of money.
The fish shaomai very too fishy for my liking and the chili sauce was strangely sweet.
The mock shark fin soup was loaded with stuff like black fungus, glass vermicelli, weird pork mince but the thing that ruined it was SODIUM, it was soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo salty!
The bowl was weird too, it was those opaque plastic dessert bowls which are not designed for hot foods.

Delish Chinese sausages and glutinous rice

Last time I had the Chinese sausage on its own and I regretted not trying the rice.
This time I tried the rice and ordered an extra Chinese sausage and it came to $34.
 0 讚好

The rice was fragrant and pleasant because when I smell Chinese sausages with glutinous rice I will usually want to throw up because the oil is rancid.
The glutinous rice was al-dente with a slight stickiness and it had a lovely sweet and savoury taste which comes from the sweet soy sauce while the preserved sausages had a fragrant Chinese wine taste.

The rice was topped with spring onions and crispy peanuts which gave it extra flavour and the portion was quite big compared to the famous joint in Wan Chai.
