[Review 7045] Great food in SKW @ 新記雞粥 Sun Kee Chicken Congee

My Japanese friend was captivated by the poster with the fried rice with prawns on it outside the restaurant so I reluctantly went in knowing that these are product shots.
Anyway, my other friend had to do the ordering as they didn't really speak English.
I decided to try the congees and noodles as the stuff people were eating looked good.
The chicken congee was good but you have to be careful of brittle bones that can crack your teeth.
The wonton noodles were unexpectedly good as it was laced with sesame oil and the noodles had a good texture.
The stir fried flat noodles were a treat because they had a non beef version.
The stir fried soy sauce noodles were different too because you can choose with beef or liver so chose the liver.
There was more liver than the noodles itself but sadly the noodle texture was a bit too hard for my liking.
The steamed rice rolls turned out to be the best as they were not too soggy or chewy loaded with spring onions and dried shrimp.
I am now tempted to try the branch in mongkok but mk being mk, the quality might not be as good as this branch.

This is a great option for lunch if you are working in the area as they serve big portions.
Tried the curry which was better than expected, it was the usual Japanese style curry sauce topped with thinly sliced grilled beef.
The Grilled teriyaki chicken impressed me because the teriyaki sauce was light and not too cloyingly sweet.
It was worth paying for because it was diced chicken thigh meat that was springy.
To summarize, it is like Yosxxxxa but better.

Rolling back for congee

Since my last visit, I have always wanted to go back.
Finally had a few places to visit in SKW so went here as well to get my treats.
When I got there, it was great to see a full house with a mix of people from the neighborhood and friends of Rolling congee because the owner is such a lovable person

I had trouble deciding what to get because there were three new congees that aroused my interest.
1) Intoxicating Charm
2) The Tippler
3)Jeju UncoveredAnyway, I've to go back again to try the other two.

On this visit, I had Intoxicating Charm and Plain Congee.

==========

[Plain Congee + whole Salted Egg]
Congeegasm!! I should of thrown the whole salted egg in the plain congee asap because the yummy salts actually diffuse into the congee.
The salted egg was so damn good and it was oozing with golden oil.

Luckily it didn't ooze out much in the container so I haven't missed a drop.
It tasted like those mooncake egg yolks and the texture is like a duck egg but I'm not sure if it is a duck or chicken egg so I've got to ask on the next visit!!!
======
Intoxicating Charm:
I knew this was going to be good because I love apple and cinnamon.
When I took the lid off, it was so impressive to see generous big chunks of apple with lots and lots of cinnamon mixed in the congee.
Look at all that Apple!!~!
You also get a side of dried fruits (raisins and candied fruit peel) so if the congee is not sweet enough, it can be added.
The Apple congee tasted so good on its own and I seriously do not recommend to eat it straight away from the joint because it tastes so much better cold as you can taste the apples and cinnamon better.
I definitely recommend this to anyone and people visiting the elderly as it is so tasty and nutritious that it possibly contains a whole apple.
Put it this way, this is a non dairy version of apple and cinnamon rice pudding therefore Vegan/Vegetarian friendly.
Rice pudding is a very common dessert in Europe so I think it can be adapted to nicely to dairy free Sweet congee and or almond milk rice pudding.
Anyway, if you like McDonald's Apple pie then you will like this new congee.
=====
As well as congee, they also serve desserts!!!!

Came here randomly after trying some joints nearby.
Got the Coconut Kaya Bun because I love Kaya.

It was quite nice especially the Kaya paste and the shredded coconut on top.

The texture is the typical Hong Kong style bakery type.
I don't know whether it is the ingredients or the way they make it as all HK style bakery buns have that same taste and texture.

The thick cut luncheon meat buns looked damn good but again, the buns are probably sweet so didn't take the risk.

I was tempted to get the Kaya Apple loaf but it felt hard when I used the bread tongs.

Again, the typical Hong Kong bakery has egg brushed on top before they are baked.

They also had samples for people to try but I just couldn't as there was a pesky thing feasting on it so I don't know what other samples it had devoured on.

In every Asian Cuisine, you will find beef noodles, be it Pho, Taiwanese Beef Noodles and Chiu Chow noodles.
I have already tried the meat balls at Chiu Ball in TST so this time I went for the Beef Noodles.
I got the tripe, beef brisket and tendons which were so satisfying because everything was so soft and full of flavour.
The yellow chili in the jar was fantastic and I always add a tiny dollop to my noodles to spice it up.

The noodles were so comforting as the broth was strong however the flat rice noodles didn't quite absorb the broth so mixing it with preserved vegetables made it even better.

Next time I will add seaweed to it as the broth was so damn good, hence the seaweed will taste good!

Haven't been to SKW for ages so decided to go there and have a look.Went here because they have my favourite stinky tofu.
The tofu was crispy but not as pungent as you would expect but saying that, some people said they could smell it when they came in.

Also had the beef noodles which had a strong soup, it was a little bit spicy.

For drinks had the Earl grey with red tea, the bergamot flavouring was very promient.
The hot fruit tea was big and made with fresh fruits!

They specialize in fish maw, sea cucumber and shark fin.
There are soups, appetizers and noodles which makes it a headache to choose because there are so many options that look good.
To my surprise, it is affordable because you can get fish maw noodles for $6x and they don't charge 10%.
As well as that, there is a set for $148 including soup which you can choose from the menu.

I decided to get a soup with everything because I couldn't decide which soup to get!~!!
It was really nourishing with a delicate sweet taste loaded with treasures.

The fish maw noodle was satisfying because you get lots of noodles which won't leave you hungry.
The piece of fish maw was huge covered in delicious gravy which complemented the noodles well.

Definitely coming back for the soba noodles which wasn't available as the pairing of soba noodles and shark fin sound interesting.

I have always wanted to try the oyster udon here but forgot about it.Since the place opposite was closed, I ended up here.
It is nicely decorated.
The udon is elastic and slightly flat with a slight translucent surface which soaked the broth nicely.
The broth was light with bits of mince and seaweed that wasn't too salty and the oysters were plump with a strong taste.
For drinks, had the strawberry fizz and homemade herbal drink which was quite sweet.
