Tasty Fried Chicken at McDonalds
2020-02-10 70 瀏覽
I love Fried chicken but it is really difficult to get fried chicken to my liking in Hong Kong.
There are countless options for fried chicken with the introduction of Korean Fried chicken a few years ago, but they are not to my liking because they are often coated with weird dressings and the quality of chicken is not good either.
The KFC in Hong Kong uses a different recipe to UK which is too crunchy as well as bad chicken inside.
Jollibee was good but now the coating has also been modified so that it is crunchy.
Anyway, McDonalds is now finally serving fried chicken just like McDonalds in Malaysia, Philippines and Singapore where chicken is wanted by popular demand.
I would love to try the McDonalds in the Phillipines because they have chicken gravy just like the KFC in UK.
In Hong Kong, the fried chicken a la carte at McDonalds varies from HKD31-HKD34.5 depending on location.
There are two pieces per portion and the chicken is decent in size compared to the anorexic chicken at KFC!!
Taking a bite, the coating was to my liking, not too crunchy or soft with a good thickness.
The chicken was succulent and moist which was extremely satisfying, however the only complaint was the spices .
I didn't expect it to be spicy
The chicken thigh oozed out some liquid which is most probably the frozen liquid that melted when it was fried.

Anyway, the chicken thigh turned out to be a surprise because it was convenient to eat in the sense that it only had one bone.
I would definitely eat it again but I am allergic to the spices in the coating so I won't be eating it that frequently.

[Review 2294] Vietnamese Butterlicious fried chicken at KFC @ 肯德基家鄉雞 (KFC) Kentucky Fried Chicken

I went to KFC to try their new Vietnamese Butter chicken which is meant to be Vietnamese style.
They had the set for $38.6 which includes a Japanese curry, two pieces of chicken, Portuguese tart and drink.
At the time of ordering, they did not have any Vietnamese Butter chicken or Portuguese tarts so the chicken had to be freshly fried and the Portugese tarts were from a fresh batch.
I was actually quite glad they ran out of Vietnamese butter chicken because the fresh batch should taste nicer.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Vietnamese Butter chicken:
When it came, the smell of butter was strong.
It reminded me of the the cheese one they had earlier because there was some yellow coloured powder on the coating.
The chicken was fried just right and extremely hot because it was just taken from the fryer.
The chicken inside was juicy and soft.
The overall taste was really nice because you could taste the butter and garlic on the coating but the intensity of the garlic was not as strong as the type that you get in garlic bread.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Japanese curry and rice:
It was the standard Japanese curry sauce with diced vegetables served on rice.
The reason I liked it was because they did not use the pearl rice.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Portuguese tart:
The tart filling was very soft as expected because it had been freshly baked.
There was nothing wrong with the Portuguese tarts but they are just not my cup of tea.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Drink:
A drink was included and it was surprisingly fizzy because the ones I get from KFC are usually flat!

[Review 2277] Hot-Star Chicken coating harder than bone

I have always wanted to try this place but the branch in MK is really busy and there is not really a place where you can stop and eat in MK as well as consuming it with lovely second hand smoke as well.
Anyway, walked past this branch and the fried chicken "looked" quite nice behind the counter, the coating was golden as if it was just done.
Anyway, I just ordered a piece of fried chicken drumstick to see if their chicken was good.
I assumed they were already done as there were lots by the counter. But they were fried again when you ordered, so the coating was mega hard!
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Fried chicken leg:
I was not pleased that it was fried again because it means that there is more oil and it smells, hence the spices they put on it.
The coating itself was salty enough and did not need those spices.
Anyway, the coating was really hard so I whacked some stuff with the chicken leg and to my surprise it still did not crack.
I started eating it and found that the bone was broken before it was cooked, which explains why the coating was so hard to hold the broken bone together and act like a plaster cast!!!
Anyway, the advantage of that super hard coating was that it can be fried many times and the chicken inside would still be juicy and soft because the oil cannot get through it.
As for the taste, I found it too salty and the coating was crunchy, hard and thick, and it was about 2mm thick too.
On a positive note, the chicken was still juicy thanks to the coating!

[Review 2177] The moon, stars and days of eternity since 1985 @ 日月星快餐 Yat Yuet Sing Fast Food Shop

When I saw reviews on this place I was intrigued why people would travel from the city to eat in this shop located in the residential area of Kowloon Bay.
The name of this joint sounds nice too "day, month/moon, star Fast food".
They are famous for their fried chicken legs.
Initially when I first came across the Chinese style fried chicken legs I thought they were weird because they are literally deep fried from raw without any coatings, same with the Chinese style deep fried chicken wings.
They all had this weird oil smell with some spices. The ones I came across before were not so good and the chicken was dry and tough.
But anyway, I was still curious so I went there and tried the chicken legs.
It took me a while to find it because it was on one of those residential alleyways where there were more than one along that street.
When I got there I realised that this shop had been running for more than a decade!
The telephone number on the sign was 7-digits only which means this place was opened before 1995 when the eight digit telephone number was introduced with an additional number 2 in front.
The menu was quite complicated since there was so much information on the walls of the shop.
In the end I ordered just the chicken leg.
While I was waiting I got my answer on their takeaway menu and they have been in business for 27 years, so they must have opened in 1985!~!
Since then they have seen the digital era involve from land phones to huge mobile phones to smart phones and the introduction of the world wide web!
The chicken leg was ready in a flash!
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Fried chicken leg:
The temperature of the chicken was really hot, so I could not indulge on it right away.
It was smoking with hot air!
Anyway the chicken skin was really crispy and almost see through that it was fatless.
I usually avoid meat on the bone items on the go because it is hard when there is no knife and fork or plate but I still tried it.
I assumed that because I had no knife and fork I would leave a lot of chicken meat on the bone because the chicken is usually firmly attached to the bone, however it was weird, the chicken came of so easily and the texture was tender just like spring chicken.
I have never eaten a chicken leg to the point that all the chicken meat came off the bone without effort or the use of knives and forks!!
Not only was it soft, the chicken was not even dry.
The taste of Chinese style fried chicken was actually quite nice for the first time that I could finally see why people get so excited eating this.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Went there another time to try the chips.
Chips:
Too burnt and crispy for my liking, but this is probably Hongkie style.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Beef steak with egg, luncheon meat, frankfurter and curry sauce:
I made a mistake ordering this because I didnt realise it came with so much meat!
The curry sauce was really weak and I probably should have ordered the curried beef belly because the curry paste that they use is different.
The curry sauce was meant for the chips but the chips were too burnt for my liking which was slightly ruined.
Same old problem, it was hard eating with plastic spoons and forks especially when there is a steak involved.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Soup:
The soup was quite nice
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
But overall I would definitely come back for the chicken again and they have quite a few special items on the menu which seem quite good if they can cook it in a small place like this.
The food here is really cheap, the most expensive item only costs $32, and you can even get a King prawn fried rice for $30.5!!!

I was here again for my favourite fried chicken and palabok.
The lovely fried chicken comes with gravy so I always order extra fries to go with gravy.
The service is really efficient and after you order most of the food is ready on your tray in an instant which is so much quicker than KFC.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Fried chicken:
The chicken was fried just right, it tasted nice with or without gravy much better than KFC.
Although it smells of horrible oil fumes outside, the chicken does not taste rancid, nor does the restaurant smell inside.
The chicken that they serve here is always chicken drumstick or the chicken thigh!
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Fries and gravy:
The fries were perfect, just the way I like them because they are pale and not over done.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
palabok:
The palabok was a bit too heavy this time, there was too much lard in it despite using the lemon to balance it out.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Lemon Tea:
It was interesting they actually put a slice of lemon despite it was lemon tea from the dispenser.
The lemon tea was way too sweet and syrupy for me.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Came here again for more food.
As well as the food and great packaging, it is interesting they are quite hygienic and concerned about health because on the paper it tells you not to place your food directly on the trayliner.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Hotdog:
The hot dog was nice and soft but the sausage tasted quite beefy.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Crispy bangus:
This turned out to be amazing. As well as the fried chicken, this is also delicious.
I have been eating this all the time at Quezon in Wan Chai, but I did not realise Jolibee also offered this.
Basically it is deep fried peppered fish with vinegar. The one at Quezon is half of a whole fish because it is a smaller fish and it still has bones but the one here is a bigger piece of BONELESS fish!!!
The vinegar is given separately here and the fish tastes good with or without vinegar!
I thought I had to wait, but the fish and other meals were already boxed and ready to serve!
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Peach and mango pie:
I do not like mango but I tried it anyway! The filling was slightly different to the product shot because the mango and peach had already been mashed up, but the taste was amazing, usually Pinoy food is too sweet however the sweetness was just right and the peach was strong that I could not taste the mango.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Coconut and pineapple:
I tried this because in the Pinoy cuisine they use young coconut and this pie was also delicious because there was more proportion of young coconut and the sweetness was just right too.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★

[Review 2131] Spicy fried chicken drumsticks @ 麥當勞 McDonald's

I love fried chicken and McDonald's finally have fried chicken legs but they are spicy.
Their chicken wings are spicy too and I find them not substantial enough.
I hesitated about getting the chicken drumsticks because I was quite sure it would have the same chili in it.
However I walked past and someone was eating it and it seemed that it only had black pepper so surely it wouldnt contain chili as well as black pepper.
Anyway I tried it.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Fried chicken drumsticks:
I was surprised it was a whole chicken leg, the thigh bone had been removed so it only had the drumstick bone in it.
The Msg in the chicken was so strong that after one bite I needed water. The chicken had been freshly cooked hence the temperature of the chicken was really really hot.
As for the coating, it tasted like over cooked tempura which is denser and cracker like.
Unfortunately I found the coating too spicy to the extent that everything else tasted bitter.
The rest of the food tasted how they should ie the fries and nuggets.
