I was surprised to see this old school bakery sell carrot walnut muffin cake and banana cake so got them.
I wasn't impressed with the lady following me about in the tiny store.
The receipt matched the old style bakery though printed in purple dotted ink.
Not your traditional Western style carrot cake because it contains raisins and walnut and you can see it was quite oily.
The banana cake wasn't nice because it was too sweet and there was no banana taste in it

[Review 6851] Egg Tarts @ 飽餅王麵包西餅 Bakery King

I have given up on egg tarts these days because there are not many good ones around. The ones here were still hot when I got it so I had to let it cool down a bit before eating it.
The egg tart filling was quite sweet and the pastry was quite crumbly. It was ok but not my favourite.
Will try other stuff next time.

I was captivated by the Swiss Rolls in the fridge.
Got the Earl Grey and Pandan.
Both rolls had a lovely soft and fluffy texture but the cream was nasty.
It left a film of thick grease over my tongue.
Although I didn't like that salted sweet buttercream, the overall taste of these rolls reminded me of cakes in China Town.

Also got the Mini Apple Crumbles which looked like mini cupcakes but then they could be mini muffins.
They tasted like a hybrid of cake and muffin because it wasn't too soft or crumbly topped with biscuit crumbs and cinnamon on top.

[Review 4997] Flaky purple cakes @ 庭昌麵包餅店 Ting Cheong Bakery

I didn’t really notice this bakery until these triangle things caught my eye.
Then I was drawn to these purple potato cakes above them which cost $3 each or $7 for three so decided to get three.
Luckily they tasted good and the casing on the outside was flaky and the appearance is basically the same as Wife cakes but filled with purple sweet potato.
There was a weird stickyness when you ate it and a slight astringent mouthfeel after eating them but it is interesting to see these old shops staying in the trend.

[Review 4727] Grab and go bakery burgers @ 天樂烘焙 Tin Lok Bakery

23/10/2015

灣仔天樂里15號
15 Tin Lok Lane, Wan Chai
https://www.openrice.com/zh/hongkong/review/grab-and-go-bakery-burgers-e2504534

The buns filled with egg and hamburger patty looked good so got that and an eggtart.
The bun was faintly sweet and acceptable as a Western bun but it still had that Chinese bakery taste and texture to it.
As for the fillings the egg was done nicely but the taste of the egg was like washing up liquid and the sausage patty tasted weird.

The eggtart had the same washing up liquid taste so it must be the eggs and it was quite sweet.
The tart base was heavily laced in pork lard because it left you feeling bloated for the whole day.

[Review 4724] I am what I eat! @ I am.. bakery

Previously, this used to be 天將麵包 but now it is called I AM.
The snacks shop a few doors away is called I AM in Chinese!
Went in to have a look and saw some interesting cakes.

Chinese style BATTENBURG!
Mini green cupcakes:

Anyway, I got this weird looking pastry which was a green tea cake within a flaky roll that looked like a cream cake as well.
I didn't really like it but tried it for fun, the green tea taste was a bit artificial as well as the colour.
Anyway, glad the snack shop a few doors away is back.

To be honest, I am not a fan of Chinese cookies because they have this weird margarine smell.
The ones here are light and crumbly and the margarine is not that strong.
These cookies caused a fiasco earlier because of the tin design.

Thanks to MKK for getting me these crumbly and light cookies studded with chocolate chips.
They were not too sweet and great for breakfast.

[Review 4644]Light and dreamy egg puffs @ 大澳餅店 Tai O Bakery

It was an honour and a pleasure to join the Tai O food tour held by Tai O Heritage hotel because we got to try different joints in the lanes of Tai O.
There were three groups so each group tried different shops marked on their routes.

Tai O is a lovely town on water which is themed as a Chinese Venetian with stilt houses on water as well as being famous for fermented prawn paste.

Our first stop was Tai O Snacks which are famous for Chinese pizzas and fried crusteans.
Then we tried this famous bakery a few doors away for the sugar and cinnamon puffs which are called Chinese donuts.

The appearance is basically the same as the Tai Cheong donut but they taste amazing because they are light with a crispy surface and the amount of sugar is just right.
The puff is soft and chewy like a fried dough stick but it is light and airy like a choux puff.

759 was a shop selling preserved packaged food to start off with and now they have expanded into other businesses such as cosmetics, noodle joints and now a bakery too!
I wonder if we will see 759 Medical clinics, 759 Barbers, 759 Laundry, 759 Petrol Stations coming soon!!!

Initially 759 didn't appeal to me because the variety was limited and it was cheap and unhealthy packaged Asian snacks like noodles and crisps but now there is more European variety and they even have TIMOTEI shampoo.

I was curious to try their bakery because I love bread but in Hong Kong, it is either proper Western Bread or Sweet tasting savoury Chinese bread.

Walked past one day and bought some bread and muffins.

You can probably use your membership card on the purchase but I forgot to use mine and the lady at the till didn't remind me.

Double chocolate muffin:

The muffin was not outstanding but at least it looked like a muffin with pieces of chocolate in it.

It was not impressive but it was not too sweet, too oily or too crumbly.

Tomato corn toast:

Technically it is bread because it hasn't been toasted yet and it probably tastes better as a toast.

With good breads, they taste great on their own but the tomato bread required a filling to make it into a tasty sandwich.

The tomato taste was surprisingly good because you could taste tomato in almost every bite but saying that it was probably tomato flavouring mixed in the dough.

There were also pieces of sweetcorn in it too but I still classify this as a Chinese style bread because it was sweet and the texture of the bread was evidently Chinese and not yeasty at all.
