[Review 228] Macaroni rice noodles @ 越色生香 Tropicana Cuisine

越色生香 Tropicana Cuisine 30/12/2008
灣仔大王東街30號地下 30 Tai Wong East Street
https://www.openrice.com/zh/hongkong/review/macaroni-rice-noodles-e1962080

The usual Vietnamese menu, and then I saw the macaroni rice noodles, long rice noodles pipes like macaroni. The last time I had this type of noodle was at Lai Chi Kok Hunnan style noodle bar.

Here I ordered the Prawn macaroni rice noodles with Curry sauce as stated on the menu, however during ordering, I was told it was White curry sauce, as the Chinese is different. Although Satay sauce was also available I stuck with my original order of white curry sauce, just so that I can have a comparison to Satay King.

The food arrived in a fashionable bowl, and a separate bowl of white curry sauce.
I liked the generous pile of salted green spring onions, and the curled up prawns.
After eating the prawn, it reminded me of the plain prawns boiled in water, and it tastes good with the spring onions. As for the noodles, a bit chewy, some ends of it were still hard, and I would have preferred the holes to be bigger in the macaroni noodles so sauce cud get in. The white curry sauce is nothing compared to the taste at Satay King. The sauce is rather lumpy, and after tasting it, it all became clear, it is 70% dessicated coconut puree and ginger, but the ginger is not so strong. The taste was very milky and a little bit sickening, if it was spicier it would have been better, and if the noodles had bigger holes soaking more sauce, it would have tasted much better.
If I can have different noodles next time, I would want to try the satay sauce.

[Review 227] Popular local eatery for Saikunians @ 泰國小吃 Thai Kwok Snack

To be honest, going to eat in Sai Kung is a headache, firstly it is crowded with tourists, and secondly the food isnt really up to standard.
I was recommended this place by the locals, the popular dishes ordered by them are usually the sliced chicken with rice, chicken noodles, and the salty roasted pork.

For tourists, they usually order the snacks, curries, and fried rices, but anyway I think food in Sai Kung, has Sai Kung style, either you like it, or you don't.
Took me a while to like it!

As you can see the sliced chicken is sliced more like shreds than pieces of chicken, and you can request for chicken without skin.
The salted pork is also quite good, very very crunchy, tasting almost like pork scratchings (Western version of deep fried pork skin).

I had the typical chicken rice with spicy sauce, and Lemon noodles in sauce, the sauce was not hot at all, slightly sweet with sour notes.

The interesting thing is that all the staff here are female, Girl Power!

This is Part three of my Roast turkey lunch, the last of it for 2008, so long until next Christmas!

Usually when I eat in Sai Kung, I really do not know what to expect, either it will be good or the opposite.
Anyway with this one, I thought the portion was a bit small, although soup was included, but for that price you would usually get soup, main and drink over at the Hong Kong side.

The plate of turkey was rather Mediterranean to me, the peppers and courgettes were grilled, no Brussels sprouts and only One roast potato. Not very western.

I think if I came here first, I would not have been impressed with portion, but since I have had my fair share of turkey, I am not that bothered about it. The turkey did not come from a properly roasted turkey, but roasted turkey breast rolls.

The stuffing was a bit different, a big slice, the same as the turkey with chestnuts and bits of meat in it, however the menu was slightly confusing, sausage and chestnut stuffing meaning a sausage and some chestnut stuffing, or sausage and chestnut stuffing mixed up ?!

If you have read my earlier part two review, I was actually served a sausage, usually Chipolatas are served with turkey.

[Review 225] A piece of England @ Portobello

https://www.openrice.com/zh/hongkong/review/a-piece-of-england-e1962029

I was drawn to this cafe by its name "Portobello", a popular street market in Notting Hill London.
The restaurant name sign just brought me back to London, the name Portobello in white background within a black border. The typical London Street sign with a postcode in red, and the borough below the street name.

The interior of the café had a tall ceiling, with shelves of books at the side, totally taking you to another world. Even the W.C didn’t look like one to me from the outside, but it was good they had their own there.

I ordered a pricey scone set with tea, served with a tea strainer.

The scone set came with clotted cream and jam, heavily clotted cream with a touch of sweetness from the jam.
It rounded off with a lovely cuppa of fragrant tea, owing to the loose tea leaves as opposed to teabags.

Heard it was shutting down soon from Chan Jan, so decided to pay a visit to this Chinese style cafe, a place I don't usually set foot in. The calendar at Lok Heung Yuen signifies the cafes age, it is one of those manual old date boards.

Before going, I checked its reviews, and saw that it was famous for Oyster cakes and tomato cakes. I was a bit puzzled because not many Chinese cafés offer them; all was answered when I got there, because it is a Chiu Chow styled café.

Apart from the fried cakes, I was recommend the chicken pie by Chan Jan. Before ordering it, I really did not know what to expect of a Chinese pie, never tried a Chinese pie before, ie would it look like an English pie? What would be inside it?

Anyway, I ordered the chicken pie, scrambled eggs with prawn and rice, stir fried black bean sauce clams and the oyster cake too. The tomato cake the one I most wanted to try was not available that day.

The chicken pie turned out looking like a normal pie, with a sweet crunchy short crust pastry, and chicken inside.
Then I had the scrambled eggs, the best I have eaten so far, just like Australian Milk co, the egg has a yolk like layer on top of it, just like a half cooked egg, and tasty spring onions mixed in it.

As for the evening snacks, they were ok; the oyster cake was a bit greasy, would have been perfect if I could have tried the tomato cake too, but that’s just life!

Another soup chain has entered hong kong, with a convenient location in LKF, very convenient for people in central.

It offers a wide range of snacks to filling food, such as garlic conch, ducks tongue to mixed grain rice.

For me, I ordered soup, and felt peckish so also to tried the ducks tongue, never tried it before in my whole life!! It appeared a little different to the picture advertised, anyway it tastes good, and strong in wine, but you just have to imagine your eating something other than a tongue!! I was expecting it to be opaque Jelly like and soft like the picture.

I am looking forward to my next visit to try the garlic conches, rice and other little snacks. I would recommend this place to try delicacies as it is neat and most importantly clean.

Finally found a place that serves goose liver, ordered the marinated goose liver and rice. It was served with the marinade sauce and the chiu chow style vinaigrette dressing.

The goose liver was smooth, and full of flavour, and the sauces were good too, especially the vinaigrette, not too sour and exploding with garlic and chili in it.

Received a box of Agnes B chocolates for Christmas, each chocolate is fun to eat and look at, since it has a pretty drawing on it.
The tea flavoured ones remind me of Cha Ke Li.

I like the fruity flavours, and nutty ones, as the dark chocolate, or chocolate filling ones were a bit plain.

I don't usually eat beef, but felt like giving this a try, so I ordered the Pepper beef rice,
it was presented neatly, beef surrounding the rice, topped with an abundance of sweetcorn, black pepper generously sprinkled over.

After mixing the beef and rice together, it smelt nice, especially after the beef had been cooked.
The rice was not too soft and not too hard, and tasted just right after adding soya sauce to it.

Another standard Japanese outlet, serving a wide range of pastas in various of sauces.

The Pasta with Seaweed sauce and other delectable things on their menu tempted me, after my first visit, I have been there several times, but the Pasta with Seaweed sauce is not served anymore.
But anyway the other pastas and side dishes do not fail.

Chicken Basket: Juicy, flaky chicken which surprised me.

Littleneck clams with butter: Although it was a small portion, the butter taste was strong, and it wasn’t like boiled butter, but a creamy salty taste to the clams, yet you could still taste the sea in the clam.

Deep-fried cubic tofu: This was the best, because I was expecting a crunchy skin, and nothingness inside, but it amazed me because it was tasty and chewy inside, like cheese. The tofu used was “thousand layer tofu” (千葉豆腐, 凍豆腐 or 冰豆腐), not usually fried, but in this case, it worked out very well.

Fried Potato with cheese: Although the name is fried potato, it looks like roasted English potatoes on the menu, so ordered that too, piping hot potato with roasted skin, and cheesy sauce.

Potato Mochi Cheese: Just tastes the same as Cheese new year cake, but adding a dash of black pepper, spices it up.

Juicy sausage combo:
Was pleased with the sauces that came with it, grain mustard, and honey.

Salmon cheese:
Light pockets of crunchy salmon oozing with cheese.

Deep fried Puri Ebi with Cheese: Very salty, but the fishy sort of salty.

PASTA’s

Pasta with seaweed sauce and octopus: (not served anymore)
My favorite, strong in seaweed tones, with chewy octopus.

Prawn spicy carbonara: not very spicy, with tender prawns, and rich sauce, I chose spaghetti, which was just right, not too soft, and not too hard. Poached egg on top, delicious.

Salad pasta:
Wasn’t a good choice, either because the sauce was vinaigrette, which is very watery, so the pasta didn’t soak up the sauce, maybe if it was thicker such as mayonnaise, it would have a better flavour.

Actually this should be part 3, but the first place I tried, I don’t have a picture for reference.

Anyway, this place is the cheapest out of all three, the turkey was juicy and tender compared to the other two places I tried, the downside is that they don’t have my favourite stuffing or gravy, however there was foie gras. The cranberry sauce had whole cranberries in it which can be seen on the picture, but the sauce was slightly sweet.

Like any usual set lunch, it included starter and a drink; my chicken salad was more like Caesar salad with three shreds of chicken on it.
Then we were given a mince pie with cream to share, which tasted like the normal mince pie with raisins and sultanas.

[Review 217] Roast turkey part 1@ Devil's Advocate

21/12/2008

Third time having official roast this year, twice at Delaney’s, the first time wasn’t complete, as cranberry sauce was not given, despite being listed on the menu.
On the second visit, was given cranberry sauce, however no pictures were taken for this restaurant.

With Christmas rapidly approaching, I just had to order Roast Turkey when I had the chance, however it was a Saturday, and not many places were offering lunch on a non office day.

My first choice was Mes Ami, but it was closed, then I went to the Devil’s Advocate, and managed to order it, as it was a Saturday, I was lucky to be served Roast Turkey, and order it A la Carte.

The Roast here was good, the turkey here was a little dry, but at least it had roast parsnips, which I haven’t had in years, the caramelized baby carrots were absolutely gorgeous, chewy, and sweet, with a roasted skin. I usually don’t eat carrots, but the ones here are good. The potatoes were soft and well done, and the mash was good too.

Finally more variety of chips in Hong Kong, I first encountered gravy and chips at the Cul De Sac joint or back home with the traditional gravy and chips or Curry sauce and chips.

Next came The Big Bite, rather crunchy chips. Then Ireland’s potato, a Taiwanese joint packaging itself to be Irish.

Now, the notorious New York Fries are in town, even looking at the pictures from OR users, it looked good, the cheese on the Poutine were not Mozzarella, the substitute commonly used, but lumps of cheese curds. Although the fries look rather brown, not like the regular golden fries elsewhere, that how they are meant to be, not so crunchy on the outside, but soft and piping hot in the inside, as they are freshly cut, just like the ones in France. The famous Poutine originates from Canada, later being popular all over the world.

Anyway, the Poutine served at NYF is so good, the fries are slighty soft, and adhering to the gravy, and the cheese curds adds some punch to it.

Apart from Poutine, I also tried the plain fries with extra cheese sauce, a thick cheddar sauce, which is different to the quick hardening cheese at Irelands potato, then the remaining fries, I went crazy and sprinkled so much vinegar on it, just like the chips in UK. The condiments there were also good too, such as the Cajun, and California sweet BBQ powder.

We shall hopefully see more branches in HK, as it is a franchise, and a minimum of ten are supposed to open in Hong Kong and Macau within 5 years.
Despite the name, there are no branches in New York!!

After reading the review by FoodieWil, I just had to try for myself.
Totally agree with FoodieWil’s comment that it is a Japanese version of ChineseGoGo.

ChineseGoGo is a high-end version of the glutinous sweets with various fillings, and now top class Mochi has appeared.

There are 19 flavours: Apple pie, Chocolate banana, White chocolate, Mango, Peach Yoghurt, Bluebery Yoghurt, Sweet Potato, Darjeeling tea, honey cranberry, Café Au lait, Rum n Raisin, Chocolate, Green Tea, Black Sesame, Green Soybean, Red Sweet Potato and Sakura.

I am not really into Adzuki beans, or the conventional Japanese flavours such as green tea, sweet potatoes etc, so I chose six flavours APPLE PIE, PEACH YOGHURT, DARJEELING TEA, HONEY CRANBERRY, CARAMEL PUDDING, and RUM RAISIN.

I tried the APPLE PIE first, the texture was interesting, just like eating eggshells, like the sugar shells on the mini Easter eggs, then oozing with apple sauce with bits of apple in it, and exploding with fluffy light whipped cream.

Then I tried the honey cranberry, also oozing with sweet cranberry liquid, this one contained bean paste, same with the Darjeeling Tea, packed with strong Tea flavour.
The Rum raisin one also surprised me with a strong Rum infusion with the cream.
I didn’t like the Peach Yoghurt one, because the Peach was a bit perfume like, not natural giving an aftertaste, I would assume the same for the blueberry one too.

However the Caramel Pudding was the best along with the Apple pie, it was thick smooth custard filling inside, with a strong bitter caramel syrup in the centre. The brown syrup tasting and looking EXACTLY like the real caramel puddings.

Anyway if your not a fan of Adzuki beans, then Apple pie or Caramel pudding would be the choice, its sweetness is different to the sweetness of the bean paste. Although both are as sweet as each other.
To me the ones with bean paste inside remind me of the Snowy moon cakes during moon cake festival, both full of bean paste. Maybe one day, they will have cheesecake flavours!

Didn’t have a clue on what to eat in MK, so decided to try the Modern toilet.
Personally I wasn’t expecting it to be fantastic, rather just something to fill me up that evening.

Didn’t have to queue, the restaurant next door was stealing its show.

Basically furbished by toilet seatings, and basins as the dinner table, and the food was served on mini toilets and basins. The dishes offered were Taiwanese style,
I ordered the Mexican chicken lasagne and baked Indonesian curry with rice.

The lasagne was not Mexican at all, no kidney beans, or anything along those lines, just mushroom, chicken and baby sweetcorn, as for the curry, just tasted like ordinary curry from the Chinese styled cafes.

Finally for the drink, had Ice-cream jasmine tea, hmm quite a weird drink, I was expecting milky jasmine shake with a scoop of ice-cream, but in fact it was pure jasmine tea, just jasmine flavoured water with ice-cream.

It would be rare to see me eat on the streets of HK, but I had to try this Taiwanese oyster noodles. The last time I had it, was in some Taiwan style restaurant in Wanchai, the portion there was small, and I just couldn’t get enough of it.

Luckily, the weather is not so hot these days, nice and breezy, perfect for eating out in the streets, but the only downside is that being located on the corner of a busy MK road, there is so much car fumes and dust, but anyway, just had to try.

It is good that you can pick other ingredients in your noodle, although oyster noodles is the signature dish in Taiwan, you have pay extra for the oysters here.
Other optional ingredients include: Baby oysters, scallops, clams, prawn, pork intestine, crabmeat, sausages etc.
The basic ingredients are grounded garlic puree, pork intestines and coriander.

For mine, I chose oysters, baby scallops and clams, and I had all the basic ingredients except for the coriander. I also added some vinegar and chili radish from their condiments bar.

Anyway yummy yummy, tasted like a thick soup filled with noodles all over, and the occasional oyster incorporated with the zing and tangyness from the chili radish and vinegar.
It reminded me of the fake sharks fin soup, but even better, because there are many variations of the fake sharks fin soup, and different standards everywhere in Hong Kong.
But so far, there is no other place that can compare to this, being fast food and delicious!!
I also tried the winter melon tea, no extra ice was added, so it was pure melon tea, for me it was slightly sweet.

I will definitely be back, well at least during the winter, or frequently if they open up in a food court.

I have been meaning to go to DAP for along time, just that it’s a bit of a trek from Wanchai station, through the sunny congested roads of Spring garden lane.

Anyway with the coupon from Openrice, and Openrice holding an event there, this place must be good, so this was the final momentum making me go!

After my first visit, I was given another discount, so I have been twice already for lunch.
The first visit, I didn’t take any pictures, but the setting and furniture was relaxed European French style. The modern tables were facing the large windows with long curtains and the sun shining through, over looking some tall buildings in front of the green hills.

On my first visit, I had 4 courses.
Amuse: Oyster
Entrée: Asparagus with Cod roe
Main: Salmon
Dessert: Cheesecake

The oyster was fresh, and I liked the effort the chef stuck the oyster shell on the plate with sticky dough, so that it doesn’t slide about. The oyster was detached from its shell drenched in its lovely sauce, so it was easy to eat.

Then came the Asparagus with salmon roe, tender asparagus with large salmon roe sprinkled on top.

After the Entrée was finished, I was served the Salmon, a reasonable chunk of pink juicy salmon, and I do mean juicy, it wasn’t dry at all, very soft and supple, almost like jelly!

As for dessert, the cheesecake was served with berry sauce, not too sweet, and smooth that it melts in the mouth.

On my second visit, I had 4 courses which I did take pictures:
Amuse: Kimamoto oyster with ponzu
Entrée: Antipasti (Parma ham and melon, sautéed black mussels, Tomato and mozzarella)
Soup: Chicken consommé with inaniwa and Spring onion
Pasta: Orecchiette with river prawn and lobster cream sauce.

The oyster was as good as the first week, but this time even better with the salmon roe.
Then came the Entrée, which was fun to each, I firstly at the Parma ham and melon, soft ham with sweet melon, then I ate the tomato and mozzarella, creamy cheese with tomato, and finally the mussel, I was surprised they were fresh and soft, not the frozen ones.

As for the soup, I just had to check it out, because it had noodles in it, after having the soup, I had the pasta shells with prawn and lobster sauce, there were many prawns in it, and the sauce was quite rich.

Overall, I like Dap, because what is stated on the menu is what you get, and I credit the menu, because the chef/management have actually researched into it with all these fancy Japanese and French vocabs!

[Review 211] White chocolate green tea! @ Délifrance

Felt like drinking something sweet, so ordered the Delifrance white chocolate green tea.
It was presented as displayed on the pic, with frothy milk and chocolate sauce drizzled on the top.

As for the taste, far too syrupy.
When I finished the drink, I found residues of tea leaves, so I guess this drink was made with real tea leaves.

[Review 210] Choc-Marshmallow Pie cute packaging @ 肯德基家鄉雞 (KFC) (Kentucky Fried Chicken)

30/11/2008

Saw the advert for the new chocolate marshmallow pie, didnt really have any expectations, but the packaging was nice.

The chocolate filling and marshmallow, was hot and gooey.
But the pastry had a strong taste in wheat, almost like McVities digestive biscuits.
After eating the pie, I thought the pastry had a more prominent taste than the filling.

I would have preferred a more chewy marshmallow.

[Review 209] Out of the blue! @ 好滋味

Discovered this shop while walking past, totally unique in its location.
I think it has great potential, as not many competitors around, surrounded by hotels, high eatery restaurants.

It caught my eye, with its new furnishings, yellow in colour, and clean sitting area.

The food menu offers good value meals with choice.

Food wise, there is so much choice.
For breakfast set, you can choose three items for $18 or two for $16
Basically 1) Plain rice rolls or Noodles + 2)Beef siumai/Fish siumai/fishballs/various buns + 3) congee or drink.

For a more filling choice, there are car noodles, the choice of Potato starch noodles impressed me the most, as not many places do it.
As well as noodles, I am amazed they have fried treasures and other fried snacks in small vicinity like that. I am going to have to try the fried treasures, chips, and fried chicken leg soon.

Apart from these snacks they also do various steamed rice for lunch and they have soup of the day too.

The only thing that could be improved would be more choice of drinks. So far I have only tried the breakfast, everything is how it should taste, the noodles were a bit bland, but their soy sauce was quite salty.
