Another new eaterie
2018-01-06  54 瀏覽
Since popwalk has opened, there are so many new eateries yet there are so many people that almost every new restaurant is packed.
Went here because this one was quite quiet.
Had the efu noodles which I have always wanted to try which is usually sold out.
It was not as good as anticipated because the noodles were tasteless except for the bit which had sauce on it.
The roast pork was chunky but rather chewy and dry.

For that price, I would rather waste it on McDonalds.

There is not much choice so I had the rice with roast and half a salted egg.
As expected I got bones and skin but at least I had the salted egg I thought but it was really salty!
I tried the new sweetcorn pudding and it was really pathetic they put strawberry syrup on top and I don’t get why it is called a pastry when it is clearly a pudding!
Anyway, there were pieces of sweetcorn in it but it was just cloyingly sweet no sweetcorn taste!

Chose the scrambled egg with luncheon meat but unfortunately the egg was tasteless and it tasted weird like plastic.

The curry beef cheek here is good but inconsistent because sometimes the beef would be soft and gelatinous and sometimes the beef would be dry.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Lemon chicken:

This time went for the lemon chicken which didn't look like lemon chicken. It looked more like grilled chicken and the lemon sauce tasted really artificial.

As with most Chinese spaghetti bolognaise it comes with a fried egg on top.
Anyway, I really hated the bolognaise sauce because it was too sweet with a strong garlic taste when the onion taste should have been more prominent.

Purple shock from Maxim's MX
2015-01-06  634 瀏覽
I have always thought that Maxim's MX was boring so when I walked past I was shocked and stunned to see that they had Sweet purple potato juice.

After I ordered it people began to order it because they didn't seem to notice it or they were not brave enough to risk it.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Sweet purple potato juice:

The juice was quite thick with pieces of sweet potato lumps in it and the sweetness was just right with a fragrant purple sweet potato taste.
It is almost like having a Chinese sweet soup but the sweetness is not so intense.
The drink is good for breakfast because it was very filling but having a cup is a bit too much!!

This branch of Maxim's caters for people in a rush because it is located at Hong Kong MTR station.
I had plenty of time that day so took a look at what they served.
The apple and aloe vera tea looked nice so I ordered it with fish shaomai.

It was fun to watch people in a hurry.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Fish Shaomai:

The shaomais were not hot enough hence they had a really fishy taste and they are the same ones in Circle K.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Aloe vera and apple tea:
Basically it was apple honey syrup diluted with red tea.
There was a thin slice of apple in the tea.

At the bottom, you could find pieces of aloe vera.

I liked the combination of apple tea and aloe vera, but it was too sweet.

I tried the Countryside breakfast because I like potatoes and not many places serve this style of potatoes with breakfast unless you are in spain.

When I saw the advert for this, I felt that the breakfast was more Spanish than European.

Anyway, the countryside set comes with stir-fried potatoes and their so called "European sausage" with a choice of bacon, egg or ham.
I ordered the set with egg.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Stir fried potatoes:
The potatoes were cut with a crinkle knife.
They were fried for a bit and then stir fried with onion, however I found it too sweet.
I was really looking forward to the potatoes but they did not taste as nice as I expected.

 ★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Continental sausage:
It looked like a European sausage but the texture was exactly the same as a Frankfurter.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Toast with butter:
I had no expectation for the toast but the butter that came with it made it delectable because it was salted butter.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Although the breakfast is continental style, I felt that most of the items were localized especially their sausage and potatoes.
Perhaps, they should rename it call it the Hongkie style breakfast

[Review 1150] Meat mountain that resembles the one at Tai hang @ 大快活 Fairwood

The steamed meat patty here resembles the famous meat patty at Tai Hang.

Although I havent tried the one at Tai Hang, I do not have any expectations for it.
I just tried it for fun because the appearance looks like the meat patty at Tai Hang.

The Chinese dishes here are in response to the Farmhouse dishes at Maxim's.

Same as Maxim's, the set comes with soup, drink and rice.

The meat patty was a mass lump shaped like a mini hill with a salted egg yolk placed on top.

For those who do not know or havent seen the meat patty at Tai Hang will be wowed by it!

The meat patty was on a bed of sliced courgettes, I really liked how it was steamed, because the patty didnt stick to the plate, and the meat juice from the patty was at the bottom of the dish and soaked by the courgettes.
The texture of the meat patty was quite firm, not as soft as the good quality ones.

Finally went on a day when the daily soup was fish maw and sweetcorn and not the beef one.

This time tried the stir-fried prawns and cucumber, overall, this dish was very light, well suited for the eldery apart from the prawns.

Anyway, the cucumber could have been cut to smaller pieces, it was too big and kept slipping when using chopsticks to pick them up.

The prawns were ok.

The soup which I was long awaiting for didnt taste as good as the beef one.
It tasted strong of sesame oil.

Found out there was Laksa, so ordered one.

There was a choice of chicken or beef, so I picked the beef and also ordered the dessert because it looked colourful on the menu.

Laksa:
The Laksa was quite good for Maxim's standard, especially the soup.
The soup is thinner than the authentic ones, but it was slightly spicy and has a strong prawn base flavouring.
The only thing that let it down was the vermicelli, it does not soak up the soup.
It was a case of vermicelli tasting like vermicelli, unless you put the soup in your mouth as well.
The Laksa had the combination of basic ingredients that i felt were Vietnamese, such as Vietnamese sausage, shredded chicken, and tofu puffs.

Dessert:
This came with the noodles for an $8, it consisted of three pieces of sweet puddings: sweetcorn pudding, taro and sago pudding and red bean pudding.
The taro was quite bland, and the sago pearls kept falling out.
The sweetcorn one was a bit sweet but was the best.
The redbean one is not my cup of tea, but the jelly that bound it together was crystal clear and pretty.
The spoon that came with the dessert was really really nice!

Overall MX's food seems to be improving, especially the packaging and cutlery.
Previously I had caramel milk tea because I liked the cup they used not because of the drink!

Ever since Maxim's MX introduced the Farmhouse dishes series I have always wanted to try it.

There are many dishes in the series, but the two I wanted to try were the fish patty with long beans, and the lemon chicken. Apparently there are alot of different dishes in that series.

The whole concept is brilliant, but the marketing let it down.

It was hard to find out which dishes were being served in advance, there was nothing on their website or restaurant.
Instead, I had to check the menu there every now and then.
Once I walked past and it was serving braised pig's tail and peanuts which sounds interesting.

Finally, they had the ones I wanted to try, but the soup that day was beef, not fish maw and sweetcorn that I wanted to try.

I do not eat at Maxim's MX much, because the menu is confusing, but this time I was impressed at the organisation, as you collect the food when the number is called out.

Egg and beef thick soup
This was light and slightly viscous, with lots of beef in it.
The beef had been soda-rized, so it was soft.
There was some spring onion and coriander garnishing on top.
I liked the soup, but I didnt like the film of oil they put on top even though its for cosmetic purposes.

Lemon Chicken
The chicken was served on a pile of fried vermicelli, the lemon sauce tasted how it should, however the chicken was slightly dry.
The chicken had chicken skin and was not coated in flour and fried.
I would have preferred if the chicken was cut into smaller manageable pieces.

Fish patty with long beans
This was the dish that got my attention, and it also was the best!
With usual fish patty from the market, or restaurants that serve it, it always contains grounded bones, unless you go to the overly expensive places.
The fish patty here did not contain any bones, I felt safe eating it knowing, I would not get any piercing injuries in my mouth.
The patty seemed to have chicken in it as well, it was firmer than the usual fish patty, and the colour was slightly different, not so grey, but a peachy colour.
Before the patty was cooked, a coiled up long green bean was curled up like a coil and affixed to the patty by being pressed on top of the patty.
The patties were then served in rich brown gravy which contained black bean, slight chili and orange peel.

Overall, I felt that the Farmhouse dishes were very impressive, the quality was as good as the dishes in specialised Cantonese cuisine places.
If only the marketing was better with information available on their website with the daily specials, or a menu timetable with the full range of dishes that they plan to serve.

I am not fond of Chinese food but just tried these dishes.

The wax duck is basically like a Chinese version of Parma ham, except that it was duck.

The wax sausages were the usual taste, but they were inferior compared to the ones in CWB, as the ones there contain duck blood and liver.

http://www.openrice.com/restaurant/commentdetail.htm?commentid=2065785
If you compare the liver sausages, the one at CWB are much darker, richer and less in fat content.

The chicken with rice was the worst, it was fat, skin and bones, and hardly any meat to eat at all.

Got the Japanese noodle set which came with Jelly, green tea and fried gyozas.
There was nothing interesting about the set, except for the triangle shaped gyozas, quite cool.
The jelly I didnt like because the grape flavour just tasted like plastic odour.

Maxim's has come up with a cute plastic container for their Hong Kong style tea range.
There are three flavours: Original, caramel and coffee.
Basically, the tea is the same but caramel jelly pieces and coffee bubbles are added to the other ones.
The tea is served as a cold drink, and it basically has the taste of typical HK tea, namely the strong condensed milk and bitterness.
The caramel bits were slightly too soft, and its taste was overpowered by the tea.
