2020 Kee Wah Zongzi!!
2020-06-11  15 瀏覽
It is the time of year when shops are selling Zongzis to celebrate dragon boat festival.
Kee Wah have come up with a variety of creative dumplings especially the duck with fruit peel which reminds me of the duck leg soup with rice!
The vegetarian Zongzi this year has lotus seeds and gingko.

Zongzis are eaten hot so all you have do is boil them for a bit and they are ready to eat.
(To be honest, I put them in the microwave and they come out fine.

Here were the ones I tried.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆
Braised Duck Leg meat with Mandarin Peel:
Fruit peel and duck are always delicious but taste better in a zongzhi because it is more fulfilling than soup.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆
Lotus Seeds and gingko:
As well as nutritional lotus seeds and gingko, the quinoa adds fibre to it hence you don't get that guilty feeling when you're having a zongzi!

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆
Betty’s xo sauce rice dumpling with pork belly:

Glutinous rice, pork belly, xo sauce (garlic, shallot, chinese ham, dried shrimp, red pepper, dried scallop, dried shrimp).
This was my favourite because it was spicy which makes the sticky glutinous rice more appetizing.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆
Red bean paste with mandarin peel zongzi:
I love the pairing of red bean paste and mandarin peel because the bitterness of the peel balances the sweetness of the red bean paste.

DUE TO THE SYSTEM WEIRDLY REJECTING MY PICS AS NOT ORIGINAL.
I CAN't be bothered to upload the pics as its THEIR loss not mine.
----------------
Wet markets all over Hong Kong are getting the new look everywhere with more eateries than ever.
As well as taking opportunities away from small family run businesses, it is also giving new opportunities to other small businesses like this one which has a branch in tinshuiwai.
It is not surprising to see clones of the same eateries in every market as they probably offer units to their existing clients before renting out to new faces as the previous shops cant afford the rent after the facelift.

There are now two restaurants in Po Lam that serve Maocai cuisine: The Fly Place and this one.

I have previously tried The Fly Place in TST where I fell in love with Maocai noodles but decided to try this branch as I have already tried The Fly.

The layout of this branch is quite good as you pick up what you want and everything is clearly labelled.
Think of it like Maocai cart noodles in a spicy Sichuan broth!
I just ended up choosing blood jelly and tofu because I don't fancy eating sweet balls made of flour and sugar.

There is a sitting area so had it there.
The noodles are topped with garlic, coriander and peanuts so they will ask you if you want everything.
Maocai noodles are similar to hotpots but they cook it for you so it is ready to eat whereas hot pot you have to wait for it to simmer.
Overall I liked it however it was a bit too spicy for me to handle.

There are always queues at this restaurant but that day there wasn't so went in.
We were taken to a table but it took ages for them to clear the table.

By the time it was cleared, we ordered but waited forever for the food to come.

The roast pork was burnt while the noodles in the broth were soggy.
The dimsum was oily and cold.
As well as the roast pork noodles, everything was sold out which they didn't tell us.

Singmalay dishes in Polam

This restaurant has been quite successful since it opened.
It strangely had two grand openings but I never tried it because the menu was just not captivating.

Finally tried it out of boredom.

Tried two chicken rice dishes.

Basically served with different sauces.

The chicken was not really fresh and it was chewy.
Also had the lettuce which was shown in this creamy white broth but reality it was bland broth but you could call it healthy.
 0 讚好

The coconut chicken soup sucked as the coconut taste was artificial.

Previously this spot used to be MATHY which whipped up decent and delicious Chinese dishes.Unfortunately it closed and it got replaced by some pub which also closed.
Now it is Tak Cheung which seems to have been quite successful even though their dishes don't appeal to me when I walk past.

Walked past one day and saw Lemon Chicken which is something I would try so went in.
 0 讚好

When it came, the sauce had curdled like lemon curd looking like failed custard.
 0 讚好

In terms of taste, I loved the sauce as it was very acidic but I wouldn't describe it as lemon though.
It was a mix of orange and lemon.
 0 讚好

The chicken was hard and dry but then then I didn't have any expectations because meat in Hong Kong is not edible.

Delicious pork shaomai with Chinese herbs

Went here in MARCH and tried to add it to o p e n r i c e but it got rejected so  I couldn't be bothered to submit it again as it is not my responsibility.
 0 讚好

I was captivated by the herbal shaomai so ordered it.
 0 讚好

Unfortunately, they had two types of shaomai so I was given fish by mistake
 0 讚好

As it wasn't what I wanted, finished the fish first and ordered the pork.
 0 讚好

The pork shaomai was so damn good because there was a strong herb taste and each piece was soft and mushy.
The soy sauce is disgustingly sweet so next time I will order it without any sauce.

Went here randomly.
Unfortunately I didn't see the a la carte so got the tea sets
The fish and chips came with strange Chinese style salad cream.
It wasn't memorable and the fries were overdone but just right in Chinese terms.
The instant noodles were the usual with sweet satay beef.

[Omnipork Tofu] Fairwood Wanchai vs Polam
2019-08-16  47 瀏覽
My quest for vegetarian food is all about having acquaintance with it.

Ever since Fairwood launched the omnipork series I have been meaning to try the Omnipork tofu but their omnipork menu is on rotation.
I think there are 4 vegetarian dishes that are on rotation which means a 0.25 chance of that dish on the menu plus the probability of it not being sold out and the probability I haven't made plans for FOOD!

It was Friday night and I was in Polam to visit the newly opened USelect so I tried my luck!!!

It was on the menu and still available to order as it was 6ish that time as most people dine out on Friday nights.

Evenings are better as you get table service just like McDonalds.
If it wasn't for omnipork, I doubt I would be dining here as the meat isn't edible because you just get fat and bones which I end up not eating.
This was my second time having this dish as I had it the previous night in Wanchai and it was too salty.

It looked promising here as the sauce was like gravy and it wasn't so dark or paste like.
Here they give you kidney beans which I didn't get at WC.
It was salty but not as salty a WC.
It was the best omnipork tofu I have tried because you can taste the Sichuan peppercorns, salted vegetables (jaachoi) and shiitake mushrooms.

The taste is similar to the omnipork tofu at Green Common Deli recipe from TASTE. Kowloon Tong but GCD is sweeter.
Again, I was still hungry afterwards but I still plan to try their omnipork curry.

I had doubts on this restaurant because it had the same style as Fairwood and CDC etc.
The food pictures looked convincing and they even had stuff like Parma Ham and decent looking sausages on the pictures which made me curious if they really had it.

Ordered the Kyoto Ribs which turned out to be pork chops.

Overall, quite good as the pork chops were meaty and the sauce was appetizing and not too sweet.

It has been difficult for me to try Baodimsinsang because of their locations.
Secondly, I get it confused with Tong Kee which is very different but much the same.
On this visit had the meal which came with soup, rice and a drink.
The steamed rice was actually quite good because each grain of rice was flavoured by the soy sauce and chicken feet.
The soup was a bit disappointing and the sweet potato bun which I have been meaning to try was  even worse because it tasted of coconut which is so different to the other purple sweet potato buns I have tried where they don't put coconut in it.
Anyway, glad this place has filled a spot in this failing location where several market vendors have packed up within a short time.

Simple and delicious salad

Went past and saw some irresistible yummy items so had to get them.

This time I fell for the okra and yam salad.
 0 讚好

From the ingredients, it was simply okra and yam with some seaweed which was minimalistic but  when I tried it, it was so delicious.
It had all my favourite slimey ingredients.
On another visit, had the scallop musubi and the scallop turned out to be surprisingly tasty as it was semi cooked and tasted like Chinese dried scallops.
