Sweet potato balls at KFC Hong Kong
2019-08-06  96 瀏覽
Every now and then KFC in Hong Kong will have some strange and wonderful things.
This time was the sweet potato balls which I believe I have tried before.
Also new was the cheesy chicken.
They had the self ordering kiosks so it made life convenient but one machine allows octopus while the other kiosk is for credit cards only, probably intended so it it convenient for them at the end of the day to do the cashing up.
The balls were smaller than expected.
There were purple and orange balls and inside it was vice versa.

Both were crispy with a  sweet starchy filling.
Overall, just a sweet snack but I wouldn't recommend it.

Having Pasta in a Wet market

The wet market has been revamped so it is much nicer than before.
A few weeks ago, discovered Penny Jeng when I was trying the dimsum shop and this other roast shop nearby.

I thought Penny Jeng was the owner as there are some people called Penelope and Penny for short but it turns out that PJ is the English for peng leng jeng!
Went here for dinner after getting some vegetables.
There are so many pastas to choose from and most are under HKD50 which is a bargain.
Had the fried fish as a starter.
It was the usual stuff but at least the frying oil was fresh.

Next was the meatballs pasta:

The tomato sauce wasn't too tangy, it had a good balance of sweet and sour tones.
For the other pasta, we had the curry which I thought would be pasta with curry sauce on top but it turned out to be stir fried pasta with curry and it was super spicy.

Finished with lemon tea as it was quite spicy but overall I loved this cute joint.

Super Super Congee & Noodle is obviously famous for congee and noodles but in my opinion their other dishes taste better.
What is more amusing is that they have a website which no one seems to know about and the English on the website is pretty good.
Anyway, had the sweet and sour chicken which comes with soup, rice and a drink.
I was quite impressed with the chicken because it was decent pieces of chicken and not pieces of fatty meat or bones.

Cold Brew tea

With all these drinks joints in Hong Kong, I feel like a guy going through red light district being approached by hookers.
Apart from a few favourites, each new joint I try is like a one night stand with no return.
Tea eighteen was a little different, I got the cold brew.
When she gave me the drink, she said I could add water to the teabag when I finished to make more tea.
Not the end of the story yet, she said if I bring the finished bottle back I could get a fresh tea bag for HKD10 in return!!
To be honest, the tea was a bit bland but when I added hot water to it, the tea flavour came out and tasted better.

Halloween Pumpkin Mousse

Got the Halloween pumpkin mousse as it was getting near Halloween.
The mousse was light and silky and there were real pieces of pumpkin in it.
In between the layers were sponge cake to separate it.
Luckily there were layers of sponge cake as the mousse was so damn sweet otherwise it would have been perfect and it was lacking some spices like Cinnamon.

[Review 6472] English fare at Eat East - Chili Beef @ 波仔 Eat East

I don't really buy from Eat East because is just Cantonese stuff but I looked twice the other day to see if I was seeing things when I saw a range of English fare at Eat East!!!!Among the range was Cottage Pie, Beef Con Carne, Roast Parsnips, Lamb Tagine etc so I decided to try the Chili Beef.
The good thing is that the whole box is Just Chili Beef ie no pasta or rice because you are getting what you are paying for unlike other meals where you get 3/5 rice/pasta and 2/5 of sauce so within that 2/5s, only 1/5 is meat!!!

The taste was really good and there were huge chunks of pulled beef but perhaps I underestimated how spicy it would be.
Other than that it was fine.

Got the noodles in satay broth with Vietnamese pork sausage afternoon tea set.

I wasn't impressed with the pork sausages because it was laced with lemongrass.

The broth was tasteless as well lacking any peanut flavor.

Got the grilled saury fish set which came with soup, salad and rice.
Unfortunately, the fish seemed like it had been in an accident because every bone was broken which made it difficult to eat because you had to spit out shards of bones in every mouthful.

From a distance, this joint looks like it is closed because the shop sign in the shop has grey shadow lines over it.
Anyway, grabbed some Flying fish roe rolls and a box of Monkfish livers which totalled $25.
When I got them out of the bag, I realised there were no chopsticks or wasabi.
The wasabi would have enhanced the taste but I just had to make do with the soy sauce that was given.
I paired the Monkfish livers with the rolls and it tasted quite nice because the livers were velvety and soft.
The flying fish roes could have been fresher because the roe were a bit discoloured and shrivelled up.
For $15, the livers were quite a good deal.

Saw these mini chocolate tarts at Pie and Tarts specialists so decided to try them.
They should have labelled the cost for a single tart as well!
They had the usual selection of pies as well.
 ☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Mini chocolate tart:

Got the mini chocolate tart which did not look like a chocolate tart at all.
The top of the tart looked more like heavy thick cream.
Indeed it was heavy thick cream,
I did not like it because it just tasted of chocolate flavoured artificial cream with their signature buttery tart base.

[Review 1669] Delicious SOUS-VIDE beef with egg and truffle HKD40 @ 大快活 Fairwood

I am not a regular Fairwood customer but went especially for the Slow-cooked beef with egg and truffle.
The Slow-cooked beef with egg and truffle is only available for lunch, which is annoying.
In the evening they have slow-cooked steak which is not appealing to me as you have to cut the steak.

Slow-cooked is the Layman’s term for SOUS-VIDE a method used in many top-notch places.
The word SOUS-VIDE seems too hard to comprehend for Fairwood’s target market because they usually are students, housewives and office workers.

But anyway, the slow cooked beef was really good and they should have an upper end of Fairwood like how there is an upper end of Arome bakery called Arome bakery room, which sells cakes at a higher price.
The dish was priced at $40 and does not include a drink so I had to add $9 for the pineapple punch with nata de coco.
I just think it sucks because Fairwood is self-service where you pay, collect the food and find a seat especially when you come in for their deluxe selection which cost more.
With fine foods like that I wish they had an upper scale restaurant for it.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Slow-cooked beef with egg and truffle
As expected the beef was lovely and soft and extremely juicy, however it lacked the taste of beef if you are a beef lover.
The pasta was slightly too salty and oily with tonnes of garlic, but despite that, the pasta was really nice.

It was nice that it came with broccoli.
The egg seemed to have some egg white missing, the portion of truffle was reasonably generous.
Overall I liked everything and ate it all!
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Pineapple punch with nata de coco
I was really surprised it was a nice drink, it was not syrupy or too sweet.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Apart from the food, the air con was so strong that it blew the tissues from the table to the floor!!
So you can imagine how cold it was!
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Sous-vide is a method of cooking food sealed in airtight plastic bags in a water bath for a long time - 72 hours in some cases—at an accurately determined temperature much lower than normally used for cooking, typically around 60 °C (140 °F). The intention is to cook the item evenly, and to not overcook the outside while still keeping the inside at the same 'doneness', keeping the food juicier. The Bill $49
