To be honest, I was in Happy Valley because I wanted to check out this new rotisserie place which is quite similar to La Rotiszzxx. Anyway, since I was there, I stopped by Shanghai Lane which was well hidden but in a good way, there were less people dining there.
Had two set lunches and extra tofu.
The tofu was a bit too sweet for my liking but it was palatable.
For the other lunch set, I actually wanted those dumplings because the dumplings are always good but the guy served the pork chops which were still ok I suppose, it had a lovely crispy coating while the meat was superficially tender.
The star of the show was the tofu, I loved those salty pickled vegetables and salted egg pieces which were delicious with the rice.

[Review 5549] Dining with the Tycoons @ 正少食棧 Smart Master Kitchen

Dining with the Tycoons
2016-11-07 208 瀏覽
Happy Valley is a town in Hong Kong right next to the HKJC racecourse and lots of Tycoons live there so subsequently food in the area has to be fit for Tycoons to stay in the game.
Went to Smart Master Kitchen thinking is was Western food because of the name but it turned out to be Chinese food.
The decor was grand with high ceilings and the chairs were sturdy and heavy.
Anyway, here was what we had:
Started with two refreshing appetizers the Julienne Chayote squash in rose oil and Wood ear fungus.
The Chayote squash in rose oil was light yet tasty infused in rose oil and cracked peppers.

The wood ear fungus was nicely flavoured with wasabi and soy sauce, the best thing was that the fungas was thick so it had a nice chew.
0 讚好
The crispy pork trotters were crispy with a soft gelatinous texture in the middle but it would have been better if the pieces were bigger.
0 讚好
Next was the stir fried seafood with Chinese chives.
I loved the squid and there was evidently a nice wok charred taste.
0 讚好
The prawn and glass noodles were scrumptious especially the noodles because it had a strong spicy kick compared to other restaurants.
The crispy pork ribs were well seasoned with garlic and they were crispy while the meat was juicy in the middle.
For carbs, we had steamed rice topped with silky slices of fish.
The rice beneath was nicely flavoured by the fish and ginger.

For vegetables we had baby vegetables in liver broth topped with liver slices.
The broth was divine because the liver was really strong and the vegetables were sweet and tender as they used the tender ones.
We had the Mudcarp congee which is a signature dish at this place.
It was so thick and creamy infused with a heavy Mudcarp taste with fine pieces of the fish in it that no wonder our friend was asking for a second bowl.
The chicken was golden and had a crispy skin.
As always for Chinese style chicken, I go for the white meat which was tender with an aromatic salted taste.
To accompany the congee, you always order stir fried noodles in soy sauce but the noodles here are slightly different, they are old fashioned with pieces of squid in it.
Each strand of noodle was evenly coated in a thin film of soy sauce and the squid was bouncy.
For soup, we had silkie chicken soup and delicacies soup which had abalone and fishmaw.
Both were good but I preferred the silkie chicken soup because the herbs taste stronger.
Delicacies soup:
Silkie chicken soup:
Dessert finished with a coconut split pea pudding topped with red beans but I was rather full by then so I couldn't manage it.

[Review 4946] Dimsum at Happy Valley @ 壹玖捌叁 Hong Kong Cuisine

I have always wanted to come here for dimsum but I rarely go to Happy Valley.
Finally went because one of my friends moved here.
When I arrived the lady at the reception was a bit weird because she was rushing me to tell her if I had made a booking when I was all wet from the rain and trying to fold my umbrella.
Anyway, it was all fine when I got upstairs but it was a bit noisy for my liking hence the reason I do not go to eat dimsums much.
It was great, they had a digital ordering system with photos of each dish and a summary at the end to show what you have ordered.
0 讚好
Although you order through the touchscreen, it is officially ordered when you tell the waitors.
Here was what I had:
+++++++++++++++
Pan fried julienne taro and mashed pumpkin:
This tasted like a delicious Chinese rosti with a mix of taro and mashed pumpkins but it would taste even better if the oil was fresh.
+++++++++++++++
Cuttlefish in spicy sauce:
Although this was very spicy, I really enjoyed it with the savory salad.
+++++++++++++++
Marinated jelly fish:
I loved the jelly fish slices which were big and had a nice crunch, but I didn't like the oil they used to marinate the jelly fish because it tasted like oil that had been used to cook something.
+++++++++++++++
Steamed dumplings with mashed black eyed peas, dried shrimp and conpoy:
These dumplings had a light taste with a very starchy filling.
+++++++++++++++
Deep fried whitebait and enoki mushrooms in butter batter:
This was a nice appetizer of crispy enoki mushrooms and whitebait.
+++++++++++++++
Vermicelli in fermented red beancurd sauce:
The vermicelli was disappoining because it tasted oily and it was stirfried rather than braised.
+++++++++++++++
Deep fried sesame balls with purple potato and custard filling:
I am not keen on sesame but this was delicious especially the mochi like texture of the sweet potato and custard filling.
+++++++++++++++
steamed sago dumplings:
There were three different fillings: pandan, red bean and custard.
I liked the custard and pandan but the sago on the outside was a bit hard.
+++++++++++++++

[Review 4068] A Valentine’s Day Tale told at HMV Kafe @ HMV Kafe

Out of all the Valentines menus I have seen this year, the one at HMV Kafe seems romantic because it is laid out like a scene in one of Shakespeares plays.
It is divided into ACTS, INTERLUDE and the FINALE.
The set is priced at $1288 for two including tea or coffee. Here was the set that we had.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
ACT I
Enchanted Garden (Tagete flower)
1 讚好
This was a beautiful array of vegetables on a bed of mushroom soil.
I just felt that the mushroom soil was not exciting enough because I couldn't quite taste the mushrooms. It could be improved by putting bacon bits to make it tastier.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Perfect Pair (Begonia flower)
0 讚好
Next we had foie gras which was paired with vinegar pearls, the sharpness of the vinegar balanced the foie gras nicely.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Chamomile Pond (Chamomile)
0 讚好
This was chicken consomme infused with Chamomile.
It was clear with a strong chicken taste.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Interlude
Light Curry Gelato (Borage flower)
0 讚好
The curry icecream was a great kick to the tastebuds because the spices were alive and the potato foam on top was silky and viscous and which smoothed it all out.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
ACT II
Apples, Apples, Apples (Pansy)
1 讚好
OR
Steak and Flowers (Nasturtium)
There is a choice of steak or salmon.
Steak is definitely the one to choose because the vibrant potato jelly layer is mesmerising.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Finalé
La Boulle de Chocolat (Lavender)
1 讚好
When this is served, they pour hot chocolate on top which melts the top away exposing the blood orange flavoured panna cotta beneath it with Kirsch caviar pearls.
0 讚好
The panna cotta was absolutely refreshing with a strong citrus flavour
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
After a lovely dinner, it was finished off with tea.
1 讚好
To summarize, I was quite impressed by their creativity and the effort they put in creating a menu like that which surpasses an ordinary cafe.

I never would have imagined the experience at Happy Valley racecourse could be so good.
Happy Valley is on the Hong Kong side so it is easy to travel there and it is attended by so many expats.
We went on a Wednesday to Adrenaline on a normal racing day which costs HK$350 per person including a buffet dinner and 1 adrenaline signature drink.
As an expat, the buffet was great because they had quite a lot of Tex-mex food such as cajun prawns, Southern fried chicken drumsticks, mac n cheese and chili con carne.
For dessert, my favourite was the British rice pudding with Devonshire cream.
