Beer stout chiffon cake

It was a guy friends birthday so we got him this cake.
There were so many flavours to choose from but we decided to get beer stout as it was masculine!
As it was just the three of us, the size of this cake was just right.
The chiffon was soft with a hint of chocolate and the jelly dome on top was the beer stout which had a hint of bitterness.
Overall quite good but it doesn't transport well because the cake keeps sliding around on the paper dolly so handle with care.

[Review 5838] Yuen Long visit with half priced MTR @ 薄荷葉泰國菜 Mint Thai House

Taking advantage of the MTR promotion, went to Yuen Long because it would cost a good $18 on a normal day.
Stopped by at this restaurant because they serve the stingray.
The stingray was a small one sliced in half, it was crispy covered in garlic, onions and green peppers with a delicious Thai sauce that enhanced the taste.
Also had the coconut chicken soup which strangely had a strong tomato taste with a spicy and tangy tone.

Good Shanghai joint in Yuen Long
2015-07-27  959 瀏覽
I don't normally trek into Yuen Long but went here because I heard the clams were good and they also serve good Shanghainese food.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆
Clams in Huadiao wine:
花雕醉蜆 $68

As expected, these clams were delicious, you could see how dark they were which meant that the clams have been soaked in wine for some time.
The clams were really tasty with a fragrant wine taste and the wine was not too overpowering that you could still taste the clams as well.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆
Platter:
五福併盤$168
 0 讚好

The platter consisted of meat terrine, jellyfish, beef shin, braised gluten and chicken with bean sheets pasta in sesame sauce.
My favourites were the jellyfish and bean sheets pasta because the sesame sauce was light and not too overpowering.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆
Emperor fried rice:
皇帝炒飯 $88
 0 讚好

The fried rice was nicely done, the grains or rice were not stuck together and not too oily with lots of seafood in it.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆
Peking duck:
北京烤鴨$328

There was quite a lot of duck meat sliced from the plump duck which is paired with the pancakes, sauce, cucumbers and spring onions.
The pancakes were a bit too thick for my liking but the duck was meaty.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆
Chinese ham, lotus seeds in honey:
蜜汁火腿蓮子 ($168)

Basically you put the ham, crispy sheets in between the steamed bun to eat.
The sweetness of the ham and crispy bits paired together nicely.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆
Shanghai dumplings:

As you can see, there is so much broth in the dumplings and the meat filling inside the dumpling is fresh swishing round in a rich and sweet broth.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆
If I am in Yuen Long again, I will come here again for the clams and the food comes fast.

Big bowl feast
2015-02-20  4731 瀏覽
Big bowl feast is eaten during festivals and this shop serves just that so it makes me wonder if they are only open during big bowl season!!

Traditional Village Poon Choi is served in large metal bowls with a perforated metal plate at the bottom to keep food from burning, as it is kept warm on a portable stove as it is being served.
Poon Choi or Big Bowl Feast, is a traditional type of dish originating from Hong Kong village Hakka cuisine.

Basically each of these big bowls cost $1200 and they contain abalone, prawns, chicken, duck, pork, squid, taro, chinese mushrooms, fishballs, beancurd skin, pork skin and chinese radish.
According to an earlier review it was only $920 but there was a free bottle of wine with it.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Abalone:
Tasted rubbery
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Prawns:
The prawns were quite big and the prawn heads tasted really sweet.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Soy marinated chicken:
I picked the drumstick part so it was delicious.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Roast duck:
The duck breast was good.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Braised pork:
Too fat for my liking
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Taro:
The taro was cut into huge pieces, they were about 7cm x 7 cm block with 2cm thickness.
They were quite hard so the other pieces should be eaten later when it gets soft but it depends if they are still there and not taken by others!
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Oysters:
Found oyster shell attached to one of them, luckily I had that oyster or someone would have eaten oyster shell.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Chinese mushrooms:
Tasted ok.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Fishballs:
The fishballs were quite nice and springy and there were no grounded bones in it.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Beancurd skin:
Very chewy and not soft enough
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
pork skin:
did not try
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Chinese radish:
The radishes were cut into big chunks so I couldn't be bothered to try it.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Overall the food was quite good

[Review 2929]IPC Foodlab dessert @ Wine and Dine 2013 @ IPC Foodlab

It was my first time going to a Wine and Dine event Thanks to Openrice’s Wine and Dine guest passes.

While we were chilling out admiring Hong Kong's Victoria harbour at night, a guy from IPC Foodlab gave us some desserts to try.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Strawberry panna cotta:

I loved the cute presentation of this dessert, it came with a mini silver plated plastic spoon too!
Anyway it was sweet smooth milky tasting panna cotta at the bottom covered with delicious fruity strawberry sauce on top.
A real treat from IPC because Fanling is too far and I don't know how to get to Fanling.

[Review 2390] Let your tastesbuds sense molecular gastronomy @ Sense Dessert Cafe

I have not tried food made by the gastronomic process so I really wanted to try this place.
This place is located in Yuen Long which was really pushing my boundaries as I do not usually travel further than Hong Kong or Kowloon for good food.
Since the introduction of the Giant Green Tea lava cake at the Steakhouse and the one persons portion at Sin Mei they also have it here.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Tiramisu:
Basically when it came, it looked like a plant in a flowerpot.

It was tiramisu covered with crushed biscuit crumbs to mimic the soil with a sprig on mint in the middle.

It just tasted like ordinary tiramisu jazzed up although the coffee and alcoholic taste was strong.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Rose leaf drift on the mousse:
I do not like the taste of rose but I tried it anyway.
The rose pudding at the base was extremely milky and the taste of rose was strong.
The foam on the top was just frothed up milk made into extremely fine foam.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Floating Island in the smog/illusion:

This was frozen ice cream with fruits. The white part tasted of coconut and the orange part tasted like pineapple sorbet.
The pairing of these two flavours reminded me of pina colada.
One of the blueberries was really big.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Sinking chocolate in the red sea:
The frozen icecream was made in the same way as above, there were two flavours, the white one was vanilla, and the burgandy colour tasted like berries.
The frozen icecream just tasted like Mini Melts icecream which is also made by using Nitrogen to flash freeze it so that there is no air whipped into it.
The chocolate lava cake in the middle just tasted like the usual fare!
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Chocolate caviar and milk pudding:

The milk pudding was really creamy and silky, and there was a spoon of chocolate caviar served separately.
The caviar was made by using a pipette dropping the chocolate droplets to made it solidify.
The chocolate taste could have been stronger.

Tagged along with some friends to this restaurant because I wanted to try Sense Dessert nearby.

The portions at this place were big.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Salt and pepper stingray:

This was the highlight of the meal because I have never tried it before.
The texture of the stingray and its bones are similar to SKATE!
It was really worth trying and I loved the salt and pepper seasoning.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Grilled pork neck:

The salad that came with it was big and there was so much meat on the plate.
The pork tasted nice with the refreshing sauce and it was not too dry or fatty.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Clethra Loosestrife Herb soup with tofu:

I loved this soup because the taste was strong and slightly bitter.

[Review 2213] Innovative bakery in Yuen Long @ 棒之達人 Franstick

It is a pity that this bakery is out of town or I would try their bakery more often.
We found out about this bakery on a recent visit just to try Sense dessert because Sense Dessert was one of those places that makes you travel out of town for it.

On the first visit my mind was just on Sense Dessert so I did not get anything that day but after reading reviews I found out about other buns that were worth trying.

After the visit to SD, I was slightly more familiar with Yuen Long and how to get there so went to YL again to try Song Song noodles and I went to this bakery as well to get the buns.
I thought that this place would have buns or breads shaped like sticks because of the name Franstick but it was the usual Hong Kong style buns, however the flavours and creations were innovative and not so traditional which appealed to me.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Pandan scone:
The size of the scone was huge and it was only $5!
The colour of it was quite cute because it is rare to see a green scone!

As for the taste, it was quite nice and interesting because it was just like eating a normal scone with raisins and a hint of pandan flavouring.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Apple bread:

Basically it just looked like a huge Mexican bun. Inside it was extremely delicious as it was filled with cooked diced apples just like the filling in an apple pie.
Although I did not like the sweet crispy topping on the bun, it was a bit like the crumble on top of an apple crumble.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Lemon and custard:

It was a pity I did not get this as well because I reckon it would taste good too.
So hopefully someone will try this and give it a review!

[Review 2204] The song of Yuen Long @ 爽爽麵店

Shop 5, G/F, Shun Fung Building, 5 Fung Yau Street North, Yuen Long

Ever since I saw their interesting shop name I have always wanted to dine here.
The characters of the Chinese name looks like a curly L and a £ (pound sign)!

This joint is famous for pork chops and chicken in wine.

For the pork chops you can choose lean pork chops or the normal ones.
As for drinks they have Chrysanthemum and Lemon but since I do not like chrysanthemum I did not order any drinks as the rest were Chinese style drinks.

The restaurant was full, so I was led to another room nearby.
(It reminded me of dining at God's Kitchen in Tai Kok Tsui before they moved to the new shop.

In that room, all the food was served in plastic tubs and containers probably because it is private property so if any legal problem arises then they can say that it was a gathering and people brought the food there themselves.
After you have finished eating, you have to go back to the shop and pay because you cannot pay there.

Anyway, I ordered the chicken in wine with noodles.
I asked for the tossed noodles because I did not want the soup.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Chicken in wine with noodles:
When it came I transferred all the chicken to the plastic container and then put the noodles in the remaining wine so the noodles would soak up the wine.

The noodles were really nice and the wine flavour was at its max.
However the chicken and noodles were rather salty and on my next visit I will request for plain noodles because the oyster sauce that was on the noodles made it extra salty.
