Chicken with dyed yellow skin?

Went here for some Hainan Chicken as I have not tried it before.
Hainan chicken costs HKD58 including soup, rice and a drink.
Anyway, didn't have any expectations even though it was over priced compared to this nice place in Central which is considerably cheaper.
Well, there was not much chicken in the dish to comment but mainly chicken skin and bones.
The chicken skin was such a dark yellow colour it makes me wonder if it has been dyed or how long the tank of chicken broth has been there.
Visibly different to corn fed chicken.

The rice was cold and oily, the typical stuff and the soup tasted weird.
Wasn't really edible and a waste of money.

Beef Wellington for one at MGB by Manhattan

There are many restaurants in Kwuntong, some are located in factory buildings, some in the shabby areas and some in some nice areas.
MGB by Manhattan is located in a prime position, close to the MTR so with a good spot you would expect them to whip up top notch or if not some above average dishes.

We tried quite a few dishes and the Beef Wellington for one is what I would recommend.
The pastry was baked just right and the beef inside was moist and tender.

Hidden Taiwanese dessert joint in KT

Discovered this joint because I was eating nearby and visiting the cute stationery shop next to it.

At first I thought it was a Taiwanese dessert shop but they also do Chinese lunches where you get to pick two or three dishes with rice.

I was actually there for dessert but as I haven't had lunch I decided to try the food as well.
They had Taiwanese mince, chicken and spare ribs.

Went for the Taiwanese spare ribs which turned out looking like thin pork chops that came out of the microwave.
The colour was dark and not that convincing either.
Although the presentation was rough, it tasted quite nice and you could taste Chinese wine in it.
The pork chop was moist in the middle and slightly dry on the edges.

The star of the show turned out to be a disaster as I ordered the wrong thing.
I wanted the grass jelly but it turned out like that.
Although dessert was a disaster, I was glad I tried the pork chops!

Went here as I was in the area, Woologoon used to be at a different location. They are famous for the milk pudding with ginger but I was captivated by the seasonal fresh peach series.
When it came, I was surprised it was really topped with fresh peach.
The peach pieces were crisp and sweet and the peach slush beneath was not too sweet.

I love visiting these restaurants that have been here for decades.
There is something special about them.

This Shanghai joint has been in Kwuntong for over 40 years!!
Decor untouched, just how it was when they opened with lots of media clippings.
They do have a Facebook and it has a cute cover with cartoon cats.
Anyway, settled here for the lunch and had two mains with a soup and rice.

The Kungpao chicken also had shrimp and ham with a lovely spicy kick.

Next was the drunken chicken in strong wine.
The chicken that we got was to my liking as there was a lot of white meat and there were not any bones.

Finished the hot and sour soup last because it was extremely spicy but loaded with tofu and black fungus.

To end the meal, they serve eight treasure tea which had to be the best I have had as it was slightly sweetened with a floral aromatic taste.

Will definitely be back as the other dishes are worth trying.

Persistence and Passion

Wah Heung Chicken has been around for ages, according to the OR directory, WH Chicken has been at 18 different locations.
I vaguely remember it at Wanchai.

The fact that there were 18 locations before got me curious so I googled this restaurant and found out that the owner is really passionate about chicken that he worked at KFC to learn the tricks of the trade.

I believe Kwun Tong is now the best spot for it because the kitchen is nice and big to whip up the best dishes and the dining area can seat lots of people during lunch while the big tables would be good for big gatherings in the evenings and weekends.

Finally gave WHC a visit during lunch and I was happy for once that the food in KWUNTONG was not too salty.
I was really impressed they had water because I don't like Chinese drinks so water is always the best.

Overall you can feel the passion at the restaurant.
Every now and then they will have talks on how to be a better vegan.

They even have bowl festival for people to order.
I had trouble with the menu but the staff were really patient at explaining the dishes.
I ordered lunch with no regrets because I really wanted to try the rice vermicelli and turmeric rice.

For the chicken, they have three types: signature and the wine infused chicken.

Ordered one each with the rice and vermicelli.
For the signature chicken, you can choose three different sauces: spicy, spring onion and ginger, the sa cha sauce.

Before I talk about the chicken, the vermicelli was the best I have had in a while because it was not sweet by default and the soy sauce they used was a good one.
The rice was also as good as expected because I love carbs but perhaps the turmeric could have been stronger.

As for the chicken, both were good but I liked the wine infused one because it had the extra punch while the signature relies on the sauces.

Will definitely come back in the evening and try the bigger dishes.

I don't even bother with Kwun Tong but that day a friend was collecting their renewed HKID and this joint was located in the same building so decided to go and check it out.
It is a trek from the MTR station but definitely worth checking out because the kiosk is cute and colourful.

There is a self service which is also manned by humans just in case you need that human touch.

Anyway, I was really excited about this place because according to their FB menu, they offer many Western dishes using Chinese ingredients such as the bolognese rice rolls, carbonara silver needle noodles etc.
There are lots of turkey options as well which is good for people on  a protein diet.
As I had already had lunch that day, I got the pandan tart and the soup.
It was the best pandan tart I have ever had, each bite was decadent with a lovely pandan aroma made more intense with the roasted coconut shreds on top.
I liked the way all the soups are vacuumed packed which means they keep longer.
All you do is rip the bag opened and pour it in the cup.

The octopus soup was inspired by the Chinese jeungyuetong.
It was creamy which turned out quite nice.
Will check out the WC branch as that one has a dine in area.

I have been craving for unagi lately so went here as they have the unagidon.
There are lots of choices to choose from. The one with four pieces of eel and an egg is good enough for 2 - 3 people.

I wanted to get the LARGE HKD84 but they said it was large because of the rice and not the unagi so I got the HKD74 one as the eel is the same size.
Evidently unagidon has been popular, you can tell many people have ordered it as the box isn't so new.
The salt that came with it was interesting as it was Sichuan spices and the pickles given were quite nice.

For the price tag, the unagi was acceptable but not the best.
There are some bones in it so you have to be careful.
