At this place, they do two types of Glutinous rice mochis, one is white and one is purple.
The purple one is purple glutinous rice.
I was surprised at how big these mochis were because they were the size of my palm.
After I took a bite, I realised why they were so big because they were filled with huge chunks of mango and not the small cubes you usually get.
Mango lovers are going to love the sweet and juicy mango meat when they bite into this.
Personally I don't like mango and the durian version tastes better.

[Review 3208] Tornado potato skewers whizzing in cheung chau @ 潮食坊

長洲新興海傍街77號地下
https://www.openrice.com/zh/hongkong/review/tornado-potato-skewers-whizzing-in-cheung-chau-e2349891
As soon as you arrive at Cheung Chau Island you will see people holding sticks of Tornado potato skewers / spiral potato skewers.
Basically, they are whole potatoes cut into a spiral and put on a skewer and fried.
I tried this place because they were fried to order and the skewers coming from this joint were not that brown because most Hong Kong people like to deep fried their snacks to a brown colour.
I would have ordered the frozen fruits on a stick but they were sold out.
The tornado potato skewers cost $27 a la carte or you can get it with drinks or fried icecream for $30.
After ordering, she takes a potato and puts it on a skewer and spreads it out on the stick.
Then she puts it in the fryer.
When it is ready, you can eat it unseasoned or you can season it with powders on the table.
There are eight seasonings to choose from:
Chicken and lemongrass
Salt
Cheese
Plum
Sichuan seasoning
BBQ
Spice salt
curry
Anyway, I liked mine plain so that I could taste the potato.
It tasted like freshly fried unsalted crisps and parts of it were soft as well which is why I liked it to be gently fried.
Basically it was one of those been there, tried that experiences.

Apart from the crepes that I went to Cheung Chau for, anything else I ate were just extras.
Tried this place because they had pandan boot-jai-go!!
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
pandan boot-jai-go:
Apart from the colouring, there was not much pandan taste.
The texture of the pudding was just like steamed dense flour.

Went past this place and noticed these glutinous rice dumplings thinking it was the usual mango filling inside, but they had DURIAN!!!!

I havent seen Durian in them before so got some to try.
They cost $8 each which is slightly pricey.

Durian glutinous rice dumpling:
It was lovely and cold because they got it from the fridge.
The taste of this was so delicious because the dumpling skin was soft and gooey and it was filled with fresh sweet durian meat!

[Review 3199] Big balls! @ 長洲東源小食店 TUNG YUEN SNACK

長洲海傍街30號後座地下
G/F, 30 Praya Street, Cheung Chau
https://www.openrice.com/zh/hongkong/review/big-balls-e2349650
In Cheung Chau, there are lots of places selling HUGE BALLS, oops I mean huge fish balls.
I went to this stall randomly because they had five flavours:
Curry, Green Curry, Satay, Gravy and plain.
I chose the gravy because it was not spicy.
I also had a skewer of offal as well.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Fish balls in gravy:
To me, fish balls are not really my cup of tea because I often find grounded fish bones in it and there is not more than 10% of fish in the mixture which is why it does not have any fish taste and needs sauces and more MSG in the mixture.
As I was a spoilt brat, the fishballs I had were homemade which had more fish meat than flour in them.
Anyway, the fish balls here were ok, at least they did not contain any bones and they were springy and elastic.
The sauce was sweet and savoury which helped flavour the outside of the fishball and because it was so big by the time you got through to the middle there was no sauce left and it just tastes like the ordinary fish ball with a hint of sweetness but no fish taste.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Offal:
Not my cup of tea because the colour of it was dull and they stank.
Something was not cleaned properly which stank out everything in the pot.

[Review 3198] Let's duck to Cheung Chau for French crepes @ 食duck啦 Omyduck
03/03/2014
食duck啦 Omyduck
長洲海傍街37號地下
G/F, 37 Praya Street, Cheung Chau
https://www.openrice.com/zh/hongkong/review/lets-duck-to-cheung-chau-for-french-crepes-e2349648
Saw this shop listed on OpenRice and the name 食duck啦 Omyduck was really catchy so I googled it and found out that they did French crepes so I went to Cheung Chau especially for them.
Their logo is really nice too with a duck wearing a French beret with a curly moustache and blue striped t-shirt.
It is located near the pier which was great.
There was a French guy wearing a classic French beret making crepes with fresh bananas, sauces laid at the front of the stall.
0 讚好
The menu was simple, there were savoury galettes and sweet crepes.
The savoury crepes were made with buckwheat served crispy with savoury fillings, there was a choice of:
omyduck (duck confit, rocket salad, homemade dressing)
La complete (ham, French cheese and egg)
smoked salmon (smoked salmon, fresh cream, fresh cheese)
For sweet crepes, there was a choice of:
Butter and sugar
lemon and sugar
nutella chocolate
mango, strawberry or cherry
nutella and banana
grand marnier
Anyway ordered the omyduck because of the duck confit.
Basically he puts the galette mixture on the galette maker.
Then he put some cheese on my galette for some reason but it does not say there was cheese in the one I ordered.
Then he put my favourite dijon mustard.
On the other galette iron, he heats up the duck.
I didn't spot him put any rocket salad in it as stated on the menu and the galette was ready.
Anyway, it was really nice of him to slice it for me because there is no seating. If it wasn't sliced it would be hard to eat the crepe with a plastic fork standing up without a knife.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
omyduck:
It was nicely sliced into bite sized pieces which made it easier to enjoy.
The crepe was fantastic because it was crispy and the filling was delicious with the mustard which enhanced the duck with some extra saltiness and tanginess in taste while the cheese held it together when it melted.
For improvements, the duck could have been softer and shredded into smaller chunks so that it could be uniformly distributed in the crepe.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Lemon and sugar crepe:
When he made it, he squeezed quite a fair bit of lemon into the crepe.
Anyway, I loved the texture of the crepe because it was soft and elastic.
He also put quite a fair bit of butter in it too which made me think "merde" in my head because I don't like butter but overall it was so delicious because it was really lemoney and not too sweet and the butter helped to give it that extra grease so that it wasnt too dry.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
As a summary, I really loved the crepes and I hope the standards remain the same.
I super regretted not getting the other salmon one too because not many places do salmon crepes and the price of these savoury crepes were a bargain, but Cheung Chau is annoyingly far and getting in and out of CC is rather troublesome just like sai kung !

[Review 2529] Crispy tofu fish puffs @ Kam Wing Tai 甘永泰魚蛋

G/F, 106 San Hing Street, Cheung Chau
https://www.openrice.com/zh/hongkong/review/crispy-tofu-fish-puffs-kam-wing-tai-e2297697
After trying these on my first visit, I was back for more.
They have two branches next to each other and I always go to this one.
I am slightly confused because some reviews say that it is minced prawn tofu puffs but the woman that sells it says that it is minced fish.
The exterior of this looks like smelly tofu with an interesting surface similar to loofah/bamboo pith.
This texture is created by slicing tofu puffs in half, turning it inside out, stuffing it with minced fish paste, sticking them on skewers and frying them.
The exterior is extremely crunchy, and the filling is slightly chewy with lovely fish taste.
It costs $10 per stick with table tissue wrapped around it which keeps my fingers lovely and clean.

[Review 2528] Thai style Ice lollies at Cheung Chau @ 花園雅座 The Garden Cafe/Pub

長洲東灣路84號地下
G/F, Tung Wan Road, Cheung Chau
https://www.openrice.com/zh/hongkong/review/thai-style-ice-lollies-at-cheung-chau-e2297696
On my previous visit to Cheung Chau I have always been captivated by this stall selling ice lollies but I never tried it because there were always people surrounding it.
I found the huge revolving metal barrel/drum interesting and the Chinese letters seem to say that they are made to order.
Anyway, I am not quite sure how they can freeze the ice lollies that quickly but all of the lollies are in a slim metal mould with a chopstick in the middle acting as a lolly stick!
They look similar to the British brand of WALL's mini milk ice lollies
I have not been to Thailand before so I do not know what Thai style ice lollies are meant to be.
These Thai style ice lollies only cost $8 and the size was not too big which was good.
It was perfect for people who were going to try snacks at every stall.
The ice lollies probably froze quicker at that sizel.
There were eight flavours: Watermelon, sesame, tea, coffee, coconut, mango, melon and taro.
I only considered the taro because the rest were standard Chinese flavours which I was not fond of.
After ordering, the guy rotates the drum/cylinder to get the required flavour.
He either lets you take it out of the mould or he takes it out for you.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Taro ice lolly HKd4:
The ice lolly was quite watery and icy, it was not milky but tasted of taro.
The sweetness was just right and the size was not too big which was good because it meant I could try other delicacies on the island.
Basically they tasted the same as WALL's mini milk ice lollies with taro flavour.
