[Review 7818] Omnipork luncheon @ 麥當勞 McDonald's

Rise and shine to a good morning with a milestone breakthrough for Green Monday and McDonalds Hong Kong!
We shall be seeing Omnipork luncheon (vegan spam) for breakfast and other toast treats at McCafe.
I was really lucky to get one that was rosy pink and not too burnt like other people have posted.
The taste of the omnipork luncheon was similar to luncheon meat but not as soft with a slight chew to it.
So it really depends if they fried it to perfection otherwise it is going to be hard and too salty.

Tasty Fried Chicken at McDonalds

I love Fried chicken but it is really difficult to get fried chicken to my liking in Hong Kong.
There are countless options for fried chicken with the introduction of Korean Fried chicken a few years ago, but they are not to my liking because they are often coated with weird dressings and the quality of chicken is not good either.
The KFC in Hong Kong uses a different recipe to UK which is too crunchy as well as bad chicken inside.
Jollibee was good but now the coating has also been modified so that it is crunchy.

Anyway, McDonalds is now finally serving fried chicken just like McDonalds in Malaysia, Philippines and Singapore where chicken is wanted by popular demand.
I would love to try the McDonalds in the Phillipines because they have chicken gravy just like the KFC in UK.

In Hong Kong, the fried chicken a la carte at McDonalds varies from HKD31-HKD34.5 depending on location.
There are two pieces per portion and the chicken is decent in size compared to the anorexic chicken at KFC!!
Taking a bite, the coating was to my liking, not too crunchy or soft with a good thickness.
The chicken was succulent and moist which was extremely satisfying, however the only complaint was the spices .
I didn't expect it to be spicy

The chicken thigh oozed out some liquid which is most probably the frozen liquid that melted when it was fried.

Anyway, the chicken thigh turned out to be a surprise because it was convenient to eat in the sense that it only had one bone.

I would definitely eat it again but I am allergic to the spices in the coating so I won't be eating it that frequently.

Dai Pai Dong experience

Proper dai pai dongs are decreasing in numbers these days so it was a shame I didn't try them when there were lots around.
The ones I've seen are at Temple Street which are clearly quite touristy and pricey.
Came across this one away from the rest, it is located next to a noodle stall which is also daipaidong style.

It was my first time eating at a dai pai dong so it was fun watching buses and people go past.
Now is a good time when the weather is cooler.

In a way, it is good that I tried now rather than before as I know what I want.
To my surprise the chef was young which explains the cantopop music so I actually enjoyed the vibes there.

For food, had the stir fried noodles with soy sauce, crispy ribs and crispy white bait.
The crispy ribs stole the show, they were even coated in this delicious salt and pepper coating.

I had a peep in the kitchen and saw that the ribs were freshly tossed in coating and then fried which gives it that quality coating while the meat came off the bones nicely.
The noodles were also a surprise, you could taste that wok fried aroma which was not too overwhelming.
They tasted even moreish with chili sauce.

The white bait wasn't bad but the other two dishes stole the show.

Not just mango and durian

I haven't been to MK for ages because all they serve is mango and durian in these yellow coloured square bowls.

All that has changed and they have some different desserts that are worth trying.

I was captivated by the Milk custard with sweet fermented rice which was served in a golden bowl.
It was glamorous but the whole thing looked Korean!
It contains sweet fermented rice which exists in both the Koreans and Chinese cuisine.

It was thick and creamy with a faint alcoholic taste but not as sweet as Japanese rice wine.

Next was the steamed egg with milk which friend had.
She said it was smooth and satisfying.

I love boat noodles because they are small bowls of noodles which are not filling.
At Tuk Tuk Boat Noodles, you can choose 4 bowls of noodles for HKD48 which is reasonable as most boat noodles in Hong Kong are around that price.
You get to choose 5 broths and 5 noodles which gives you 25 different choices already!
I love beef broths so chose beef broth as a base and for the noodles they had the usual like egg, Cambodian, Dried Flat Noodles etc but the potato noodles were different so tried that.
 0 讚好

My favourite had to be the egg noodles with meatballs as the noodles absorbs the broth nicely.
Finished with a lime soda to round things up!
For the toppings I chose tripe and meats but there are also plenty of other options which are endless!
Will be back again.

There are now three branches of What the Pho, the one at TKO is always busy so tried this one.
You could smell pho from the door especially the beef broth and herbs.
 0 讚好

On the menu, there were so many noodle options.
I'm not a fan of meat balls so just got the plain thinly sliced raw beef noodles.

I was impressed as the beef was lean and fresh while the soup was oil free and clear.
The noodles soaked the broth well and the soup was aromatic so it was a nice bowl of pho.

I was starstruck by the name Star Zest but not their food.
It was Chinese food which had a modern presentation which made it better.
As I wasn't hungry, I settled for the seafood soup with rice.

The rice was served separate.

The way it was served was impressive as it looked like a huge Italian Arancini.
You are supposed to put the rice in the soup I prefer them separate.
Overall the soup was good on its own and so was the rice.

No brainer

Spotted this shop on the corner selling salted egg yolk snacks.
There were lots to choose from but the brainless shrimp heads sounded cool.

Quoting from Star Chew's website they claim they carefully remove all the unwanted brain, eyes except for the cheeks which is then deep fried.

Since they were brainless I wasn't sure if they were going to tasty as the best tasting bit in a shrimp is the tomalley.
Anyway, the salted egg yolk taste was prominent and starchy.
I was impressed at the thick crunchy coating.
Overall quite delicious but HKD68 is a bit pricey.

Tried this in KwunTong and I fell in love with one of their teas in glass bottles.
I am so glad V walk has this shop as I was intending to get the tea again but it was sold out
It was a guy there that day who was the owner because if you google this shop, its the same person.
I like this branch because there is a small corner where you can sit down and have a drink.
This shop is hard to miss as it is next to the loo.
Anyway, on this visit, had the Roselle tea which is just Chinese Ribena in terms of taste.
Will be back for the tea in glass bottle so please restock it!

Fuji Tea has a large sitting area so went here for a drink.
Having had a bad drink from one of the drinks upstairs decided to try mango with red dragonfruit.
Highly recommended if you love mango as it is blended with real fruit.
To be honest, I thought it was quite a heavy drink which is almost like having dessert.
According to the picture, I got more mango than dragonfruit.

Cha:fe is on the ground floor entrance so you can't miss it if you are coming to the mall from that side.

I love toasts so went here for the egg toast.
It was dressed with ketchup so it tasted good and not weird salad cream.
The bread was toasted evenly and not too hard.
Finished with coffee which was satisfying.
Will try other items.

Gyu-Kaku is so popular in Hong Kong that there are so many branches.

I was captivated by the rice topped with spring onion and seaweed which was why I went.
As this place specializes in grill, it would be strange if I didn't order any meat so I got the miso pork.
The impressive thing is that they have beyond burger steaks and plant based fish so next time I am going to try it.

Basically I am happy with carbs, and it was simply delicious having plain rice with seaweed and spring onions.
When you burst the yolk, it is even better.

The pork was also good because it looked like fresh uncured bacon.
There are so many sauces to choose from but I chose miso so that it would taste salty like bacon.

Overall, quite good so next time I will try the vegetarian items to grill.

There are quite a few branches of Tom N Toms Coffee around Hong Kong.
I thought it was American but it is actually Korean.

They had some captivating sweet treats so I tried them.
Muffins are everywhere but the ones here had runny fillings.

Tried the triple chocolate muffin and the apple and cinnamon muffin which were both oozing with filling from the middle and piping hot.

The apple and cinnamon muffin was good  because the cinnamon was strong. there were bits of apple puree in the middle as well so these muffins are worth trying.

As I was in the area, decided to try this drinks joints.
The taro milk tea with cream ended up really slushy as the ice was not blended properly.
The taste was ok and palatable but there were just too many pieces of crushed ice which was annoying.
