Retro snacks as well as the famous pizza

It was an honour and a pleasure to join the Tai O food tour held by Tai O Heritage hotel because we got to try different joints in the lanes of Tai O.

There were three groups so each group tried different routes.
Tai O is a lovely town on water which is themed as a Chinese Venetian with stilt houses on water.
They are also famous for fermented prawn paste.
大澳小食 was one of the shops on our list and I was really chuffed because I have tried it before twice for the Chinese pizza and fried shellfish.

This time we had the Chinese pizza again which was still delicious as the first two times I had it.
Basically they are similar the the crepes at Mr Bing.
+++++++++
We also had these retro snacks called YAU CHEE that are hard to find in HK these days because no one does them.

I have tried them before but it was at the Tsing Yi opera food stall.

The retro snack here is really good because there is not much batter and the rest is juicy grated Chinese radish and shrimps.

It tasted really nice and reminds me of an Indian Pakora!!
+++++++++
We also tried the fried fish which was 100% edible including the head, bones and tails~

I go to Tai O frequently because there are so many joints to eat with a good variety of snacks but I have never had a meal in these restaurants because I am usually full by then.

Tai O Crossing Boat Restaurant is a restaurant that I have bookmarked to go for the steamed rice with dried seafood.

Here was what we had:

Steamed rice with dried seafood:

I call this the Chinese paella which is sooooooooo yummy because the rice has absorbed all the flavours from the dried seafood especially the dried squid!~
This rice is damn delicious so leave some room for it which is hard because there are so many other temptations at Tai O!!
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆
Tofu and vegetable soup:

This is an amazing soup because the taste is light and there is no msg!
It was pure goodness in it with tofu, tomatoes and seaweed.

Squid cakes:

Springy and delicious.

Roast goose:

I love goose but I can't eat goose anymore because I get acne after eating it.

Thanks to the tour, we all had dinner here and I quite liked the food.

The fried rice was really good because it was cooked with dried prawns which give it a lovely salty prawn taste, and the steamed pork belly with prawn paste was not oily with a flavourful prawn paste infused in it.
Salt and pepper squid.

The prawns in salted egg yolk were fragrant and velvety.

As the tour was held by Tai O Heritage hotel, how could we not visit the hotel!!
Went to the Tai O Lookout which is a beautiful big greenhouse with scenic views of the place.
The drink was classy with two different colours which were roselle and apple juice.

After mixing it, the drink was very refreshing and not too sweet.
The others in the group had the abalone fried rice and quesadillas!!

This was a shop on our list which I have tried before.
Prices can be pricey but the squid with wasabi was good and the clams are good if they are in season.

[Review 4645] Refreshing lemon tea at Tai O @ 其記

其記 was one of the shops on our list and I was really chuffed because I have tried it before and the lemon tea is fantastic.
The lemon tea here is unique compared to others served in Hong Kong.
It contains no lemon slices which give off a bitter taste due to the lemon peel.
When I saw reviews of this strange looking lemon tea I just had to try it, and it tastes just as good as the Lemon Tea at Greyhound.

The price of the lemon tea is cheap compared to Greyhound.
I rarely order Lemon tea in Hong Kong because the tea that they use is not my cup of tea and for cold lemon tea, you need to request for no syrup or less syrup because the standard ones are far too sweet but after requesting, it usually ends up far sweeter than it should.
As well as the taste, the appearance of the tea looks like tea with a few drops of milk added to it and some lemon bits floating about served in a glass with a straw.
It was interesting watching them make the lemon tea because they make it like cocktails where they add various liquids and pour from one glass to another ensuring the lemon tea cocktail is mixed thoroughly.
On the table, there was an interesting bowl of water with a metal pot inside.
The water is like a moat so that ants drown before they can get to the sugar!!
Hence the name gik say ngai in Chinese.

Tai O is a lovely town on water which is themed as a Chinese Venetian with stilt houses on water as well as being famous for fermented prawn paste.

Our first stop was Tai O Snacks which are famous for Chinese pizzas and fried crusteans.
Then we tried this famous bakery a few doors away for the sugar and cinnamon puffs which are called Chinese donuts.

The appearance is basically the same as the Tai Cheong donut but they taste amazing because they are light with a crispy surface and the amount of sugar is just right.
The puff is soft and chewy like a fried dough stick but it is light and airy like a choux puff.

Tai O is famous for quite a lot of things ranging from prawn paste, grilled squids, etc.
As you can get grilled squids everywhere I opted for the grilled fish roe.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Grilled fish roe:

Before it was served, he tried to persuade me to have chili oil on it because it might be a bit fishy, but I refused.
The fish roe was quite hard and coarse saturated with salt.
It was not as fishy as I expected but quite salty!

[Review 2176] Your healthy dose of Chitosan and gourmet food @ 大澳小食

Every time I visit Tai O, I always have to visit this place because their food is so delicious, especially their signature pancakes and their chips.
Luckily, for me there is no such thing as yithei (the Chinese definition of heatiness), so I can eat all the fried stuff I want without suffering any sore throats or weird symptoms.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Deep fried crabs:

I did not try this last time so I ordered it.
They were deep fried mini crabs which all of it was edible so you can get your dose Chitosan which is a fat blocker or reduces the amount of oil absorbed in the body as well as a good source for Calcium.
It started off quite nice but it got saltier because after you have had a lot of crab it tends to taste salty.
Just like my previous visit, they gave me a shrimp and a piece of fish to try too

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Deep fried chips:

I ordered a big portion this time because I cannot get enough of it. The centre of each of the chips were lovely and soft inside.
The coating is just as nice.
Its a pity they do not have vinegar but mixing the ketchup and chili sauce that they have makes a good dip for the chips.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Deep fried squid:

The fried squid was a bit too tough for my liking. The frying ruined its delicate texture.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Pancake:

Again this was delicious, I had forgotten how delicious they were.
Each piece is separated by a piece of paper which makes them easier to pick up without getting your fingers dirty.
I loved the strong cumin and cilantro taste.
