I was recommended this place because they serve lots of dishes from Niigata in Japan.
As we were a big group, we tried the set meal for one which costs $780 and some a la carte dishes.
The set meal was quite good because there were quite a few good items included, it even had Niigata rice which is cooked in the copper pots when you go into the restaurant.

Here were the items in the meal, followed by some a la carte items that we shared.

Appetizer:

There were two pieces of sushi (Japanese sea urchin, lean bluefin tuna), steamed egg custard with prawn and Salmon roe with grated radish.
The bluefin tuna was a delight, the taste was strong with a brilliant umami aftertaste.

Soup:

This was a clear steamed prawn dumpling soup with a springy prawn patty.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Sashimi:

On the sashimi plate were Ikijine Japanese amberjack, medium fatty bluefin tuna, seabream and Northern prawn.
All of them were fresh and tasty.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Tempura:

The delicate tempura coating on the Prawn and Japanese vegetables were nice.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Grilled food:
Sado city style salt grilled rosy seabass

The fish was delicate and silky.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Main dish:

The A5 wagyu rib eye was grilled on the hot stone which lets you control how well you want the beef done and mine ended up juicy and tender.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Simmered dish:
Simmered thornyhead rockfish

Compared to the first fish, the texture was silkier and it was covered in an appetizing sauce.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Rice:
Sakura prawn with Niigata Koshihikari rice cooked in tradtional copper pot.

As a carbs lover, this was my favourite because the rice was soft and slightly sticky mixed with delicious sakura prawns that gave it a savoury taste.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
We also had the plain Niigata Koshihikari rice served with seakelp, roe and pickles.

This was delicious as well, the simplicity of rice that had a natrual sweetness paired with strong tasting sides.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Niigata salmon sakebitashi

The slices of dried fish were soaked in sake which tones down the pungent flavour while releasing the aromatic salty taste of the preserved fish.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Stone grilled pork roast “koshi gold”

The pork was juicy and lean.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Tochio specialty: jumbo fried tofu

This was another favourite of mine because the tofu was springy and soft.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Niigata local specialty Noppe

The vegetables in light gravy were perfect for balancing the heavy dishes served earlier.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Japanese vegetables assortment with 2 kinds of miso [snow aged miso used]

These vegetables were another delight, they were sweet and crunchy paired with miso.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
To summarize, the copper pot Niigata Koshihikari rices and the bluefin tuna were fantastic.

[Review 3488] Quick stop for soba noodles @ JP Deli

I came here because I wanted something not filling and the soba noodles were ideal for my huge appetite.
After that, I was ready to eat something else.
JP Deli is located conveniently in Sheung Wan close to Central.
They serve a wide variety of bentos ranging from fried chicken, omelettes and curries.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Soba noodles with chicken meatballs:
The soba noodles were really nice but the broth was a bit salty.
In the broth, there was sweetcorn and seaweed that made the noodles more tasty.
However the only thing that let it down were the chicken meatballs which I felt were not that fresh because they had a foul taste.
It is really hard for chicken to have a foul taste so I suspect it had been cooked or refridgerated for a few days.

[Review 467] 04/10/2009 Fried japanese food @ 近又吉列黑豚專賣店 (旺角) Kinmata Tonkatsu

Came here just to try their fried snacks, ordered the curry burato, fried curry rice ball, which is similar to the Italian version, except the Italian version is not that crunchy on the outside.

Surprisingly the curry rice ball was quite nice, and the cheese in the centre went well with the curry rice.

The next snack was fried edamame beans and potato croquette, it tasted rather plain and boring and need sauces to spice it up.

[Review 67] Massive Scallop Sushi @ 御家迴轉壽司 Oie Sushi

Date reviewed on openrice: 30/04/2007

Nothing special about their food, only one interesting thing eaten was the extra large scallop sashimi.
Very very big!
Anyway the other thing worth mentioning about was sushi with 5 choices of salt: lemon salt, curry salt, plum salt, grapefruit salt and peach salt.
You can only choose one, but its ok.
The other thing that i tried was also delicious, the fried crab covered in salty egg yolk, it was good, except the crab was literally chopped crab in its shell. So had difficulty eating it.
Apart from that, their organisation was a bit messed up, they kept serving dishes that we didnt order.

[Review 31] Great rainbow curries @ 咖喱物語 curry monogatari

Date reviewed on openrice: 09/04/2006

Furnishing:
Great, very modern and futuristic, even the cutlery and water glass is quite cool!

Food:
Interesting rainbow curry.
Basically the sauce does not have any taste of curry, however the meat sauce on top of the rice is curry flavoured. The rice used is Japanese pearl rice.
Black = sesame & squid
Green = spinach
Purple= taro
Red = tomato
Cant remember the rest!!

[Review 29] Black Udon @ 遊食手打烏冬

Date reviewed on openrice: 09/04/2006

After reading a magazine about the black udon, I gave it a try. I must say I am very impressed with its taste. The udon was firm and chewy, with a slight squid ink taste, and sauce that came with it was the best, vinegary and fragrant with sesame. The complimenting vegetables included mustard cress and cherry tomatoes. The udon was garnished with pieces of gold which tasted like gelatin.

The cheese and sweetcorn gyoza is also worth ordering, since most places only do meat gyozas.
