Marks and Spencers Apple Turnover

Marks and Spencers has the best sweet treats so went there to get my cream cravings.
Got the Bramley apple turnover which contain delicious freshly whipped cream.
The apple turnovers have to be eaten asap before the pasty gets soggy. I love that lovely balance of tart crisp apple cubes and cream encased in the light puff pastry dusted with powdered sugar.
I am not sure if they have changed the recipe because the one I tried in December 2018 had sugar on top but the one here clearly had caster sugar (powdered sugar) which is delicate and gives it some subtle sweetness.

A while ago my friend got me some palmiers from Kee Wah Bakery which were pretty and pink.
It is difficult to see from the photo but they were rosy pink
Each one was delicate and crispy with a buttery aroma complimented by the sugar coating.
She ago got me some Taiwanese pineapple cakes.
My favourite had to be the egg yolk.

There was literally half an egg yolk inside which was evilicious with the buttery shortcrust pastry.

Went here for some Hainan Chicken as I have not tried it before.
Hainan chicken costs HKD58 including soup, rice and a drink.
Anyway, didn't have any expectations even though it was over priced compared to this nice place in Central which is considerably cheaper.
Well, there was not much chicken in the dish to comment but mainly chicken skin and bones.
The chicken skin was such a dark yellow colour it makes me wonder if it has been dyed or how long the tank of chicken broth has been there.
Visibly different to corn fed chicken.

The rice was cold and oily, the typical stuff and the soup tasted weird.
Wasn't really edible and a waste of money.

Tempeh from Indonesia goes West then East
2020-02-10  1322 瀏覽
Tempeh comes from Indonesia, so you will know what it is if you have tried it.
If you haven't it is basically fermented soy beans that form a soy bean cake in the fermenting process.
Tempeh is popular in the West as it is high in protein which makes it a good vegetarian ingredient.
I like it the way the West have taken it to the next level by making modern Tempeh with green peas, quinoa and even peanuts.
As well a Tempeh, Jackfruit is another fruit from the East which is popular in the West.
In the East, Jackfruit is just a fruit, while in the West they use raw jackfruit as a vegetarian ingredient in dishes.

In the UK, we have Tempeh Man which serves Tempeh Curries and you can also buy ready to eat Tempeh at the supermarkets available in original and curry flavoured as well as Tempeh kits to make your own Tempeh at home.
The fermentation process is started by culture that contains Rhizopus mold which grows and binds the beans together.
Think of the white mold like the white mold for Brie depending on what culture they use.
The prices of Tempeh in Hong Kong vary from a few dollars at Indonesian shops to a whopping HKD78 for a few tiny pieces which I had at NatrualLead in TST.

Finally, Hong Kong has a specialist Tempeh shop in Central where the owners have lived in the US before which makes sense.
Hence their menu is quite comforting for expats offering pizzas, baked potatoes and the signature burger.
It was really difficult making a choice as I wanted to try everything but clearly the baked potatoes is not a popular choice for locals because they just don't eat starchy things.

As much as I would have wanted to try the burger, I ordered the curry tempeh rice so that I could compare it to the UK but unfortunately I was given the baked one with brocoli and cheese but according to the receipt it was what I ordered but I didn't check at the time because the curry was also hkd48.

Although it wasn't the one I wanted to try but it was still delicious.
The tempeh pieces were sticky and firm yet soft similar to refried beans in a tomato sauce that was really tasty.
Beneath it was quinoa rice which is healthy as well so overall I was extremely pleased with my lunch.

I was really lucky, they gave me a bag of original tempeh to try which I happily munched as a snack.
The pieces of tempeh were nice and soft.

Also had some for dinner paired with marmite and the two go together so damn well.

Definitely coming back for more!
Will probably try the jacket potato and burger next time.

Tasty Fried Chicken at McDonalds

I love Fried chicken but it is really difficult to get fried chicken to my liking in Hong Kong.
There are countless options for fried chicken with the introduction of Korean Fried chicken a few years ago, but they are not to my liking because they are often coated with weird dressings and the quality of chicken is not good either.
The KFC in Hong Kong uses a different recipe to UK which is too crunchy as well as bad chicken inside.
Jollibee was good but now the coating has also been modified so that it is crunchy.

Anyway, McDonalds is now finally serving fried chicken just like McDonalds in Malaysia, Philippines and Singapore where chicken is wanted by popular demand.
I would love to try the McDonalds in the Phillipines because they have chicken gravy just like the KFC in UK.

In Hong Kong, the fried chicken a la carte at McDonalds varies from HKD31-HKD34.5 depending on location.
There are two pieces per portion and the chicken is decent in size compared to the anorexic chicken at KFC!!
Taking a bite, the coating was to my liking, not too crunchy or soft with a good thickness.
The chicken was succulent and moist which was extremely satisfying, however the only complaint was the spices .
I didn't expect it to be spicy

The chicken thigh oozed out some liquid which is most probably the frozen liquid that melted when it was fried.

Anyway, the chicken thigh turned out to be a surprise because it was convenient to eat in the sense that it only had one bone.

I would definitely eat it again but I am allergic to the spices in the coating so I won't be eating it that frequently.

DUE TO THE SYSTEM WEIRDLY REJECTING MY PICS AS NOT ORIGINAL.
I CAN't be bothered to upload the pics as its THEIR loss not mine.
----------------
Wet markets all over Hong Kong are getting the new look everywhere with more eateries than ever.
As well as taking opportunities away from small family run businesses, it is also giving new opportunities to other small businesses like this one which has a branch in tinshuiwai.
It is not surprising to see clones of the same eateries in every market as they probably offer units to their existing clients before renting out to new faces as the previous shops cant afford the rent after the facelift.

There are now two restaurants in Po Lam that serve Maocai cuisine: The Fly Place and this one.

I have previously tried The Fly Place in TST where I fell in love with Maocai noodles but decided to try this branch as I have already tried The Fly.

The layout of this branch is quite good as you pick up what you want and everything is clearly labelled.
Think of it like Maocai cart noodles in a spicy Sichuan broth!
I just ended up choosing blood jelly and tofu because I don't fancy eating sweet balls made of flour and sugar.

There is a sitting area so had it there.
The noodles are topped with garlic, coriander and peanuts so they will ask you if you want everything.
Maocai noodles are similar to hotpots but they cook it for you so it is ready to eat whereas hot pot you have to wait for it to simmer.
Overall I liked it however it was a bit too spicy for me to handle.

The mackerel was not fishy but i wish there was more filling inside.
It was nice but the pepper oil didn't give it the spicy kick I was looking for so overall the taste was just sweet.

Went to KFC again because they had chicken nuggets.

As well as chicken nuggets, they had crisps and these Portuguese tarts filled with mochi and red beans.

For mains, had my usual favourite which was rice with luncheon meat, fried chicken and mushroom gravy.

Unfortunately, the rice was rather mushy this time, a cross between congee and soggy rice while the luncheon meat was dry on one side.

Next were the chicken nuggets which come with wasabi salad sauce.
The chicken nuggets tasted really familiar like those frozen microwavable ones.
I would much prefer BBQ sauce to go with the nuggets but then this is Hong Kong where they prefer wasabi.
Ended up getting the crisps as well as it was reasonably priced at HKD10 for 2.
They were quite spicy with a sweet aftertaste and reminded me of the Indian Lay's Masala Magic with the spiciness reduced.

As well as Australian cafes opening in UK like Jamaica Blue, there are other Aussie cafes in Hong Kong like Deus Cafe although not formerly updated on their site yet.

Deus Cafe is located at THE ONE in the IT block offering laid back light meals in a casual area

I always like the try the items which are on the AUZ menu and see how it compares.
The avocado toast was one of the items.
It was toast topped with smashed avocado, feta cheese, zaatar, chili oil and lemon.

Zaatar is a popular spice in the West but not many restaurants serve it in Hong Kong except middle Eastern restaurants.

Settled for the Avocado toast and the prawn salad.
The Avocado toast was as good as anticipated, it was crispy toast smothered with smashed avocado as well as avocado pieces on top with feta crumbs and greens.
Adding the lemon made it even more appetizing.

The prawn salad was colorful with rice vermicelli at the bottom.
Definitely recommended for those on diet.

For drinks had the Mocha and Breakfast Tea.
The tea was loose leaf tea which was nice and strong.
