[Review 7664] Japanese highball paired with Izakaya bites @ The ThirtySix

According to The ThirtySix Bar & Co's website, it is Asia's first and only (ex-Japan) cocktail bar serving the perfect Japanese highball The Mizuwari way paired with gourmet Izakaya inspired bites.
As well as that, everyone is probably here to see if they get a lucky glimpse of Daniel Wu who is either The Chief or The boss according to the photo on the website!
Anyway, no sighting of Daniel Wu that night but we had some fantastic food paired with drinks.

Started off with the 21st Century California and Seedlipper.
The  21st Century California was made with precision with steps that were followed strictly to ensure the perfect cocktail.
I must admit the 21st Century California was to my liking because it was SWEET concocted with Rinomato Bianco an aperitivo from Piedmont that uses aromatic ingredients including bergamot, rhubarb, vanilla and mandarin.
It also had Mezcal which is made from the agave plant.
Garnished on top was dark chocolate which enhanced the drink as it was like eating chocolate filled with alcohol.

Seedlipper was another good mocktail because it had my favourite basil syrup and most importantly Seedlipper Garden 108, a distilled non-alcoholic spirit from UK.

Moving on to the food, there was something for everyone.

Foie Gras & Oyster in Yakitori Sake Sauce:
This was a delicious pairing of oysters and foie gras on crispy seaweed and cress drizzled in sweet yakitori sauce.

Rice Crackers with Vegan Mocktail Mousseline:
I loved the layered mousseline dip which had avocado which was thick and creamy.

Cheese Platter:

Abura-age tofu Yuzu or Xinjiang style:
If you order the abura-age tofu you get to choose yuzu or Xinjiang so I ordered both.
Xinjiang would definitely be my pick as I love those Xinjiang spices and cumin but yuzu was not bad either because it wasn't too sweet as anticipated.

Flambeed Tiger prawns wrapped in chicken skin:
Prawns are natrually yummy but with chicken skin that has been flambeed until its crispy makes them moreish!

Seasonal Fruits Platter :
This was unique and delicious, there was apricots, pineapples, figs and plums!
They were simply juicy and delicious without the sauce.

This is definitely the place to hangout.

HKD50 Freshly squeezed pomegranate juice
The Sultan’s Corner has been in Central for quite a while but I haven't managed to try it yet.
Went past and saw freshly squeezed pomegranate use for HKD50 so decided to give it a try as I missed it at this other Turkish place in Saikung.
HKD50  for freshly squeezed pomegranate juice is a bit pricey but much quicker than peeling it yourself I suppose!!
The pomegranate juice was quite nice but it had bits and pieces which can choke you easily so drink with caution, otherwise quite a refreshing juice drink.

Went here randomly as they serve Hainan Chicken which is one of my favourite meals.I was also captivated to try it because the prices were under HKD50, for thigh meat it costs HKD45 and the regular costs HKD32.
It is also very smart of them to have wings with rice for HKD28 as HongKongers eat everything whereas I'd probably throw it away especially Hong Kong anorexic chickens which are just skin and bones but then I could be wrong here!

For Hong Kongers, thigh would be the choice but I prefer the breast meat as it is bone free and there is more edible meat.
Since the thigh meat was only HKD45, I decided to give it a try as they highly recommended it.

The thigh meat was served boneless, it was very silky and tasty so I didn't regret ordering it but breast meat would have been more filling for the stomach.
On the table, there was ginger puree and chili sauce which look like they were made in house.
Tried the chili sauce and didn't like it because it was sweet but the ginger puree was fantastic and it was fresh.
Another point that is worth mentioning is that they have water on the table because as an expat I don't really like Chinese drinks.

Overall very satisfied so I will be back to try the Hainan Chicken and request for the breast meat.
HOPEFULLY, IT WILL TASTE CONSISTENTLY GOOD!
The only complaint was the Chinese spoon, it wasn't very ergonomic for the mouth!

Third branch of Ichigen in Central

Time flies and now there is a third branch of Ichigen in Central!!!
At the Central branch, they have cold ramen with shrimp and sesame sauce which is the best thing for summer.
The decor is pretty much consistent with the other two branches.
They even have USB charging points at the bar tables.
As well as the cold noodle, they have the SET  for 2 for HKD388 which includes 2 ramens, Gyoza, A box of noodles and a Power pack charger.
I ordered the exclusive cold noodles which was topped with ginger tempura, prawns and pork.
The soupless cold noodle was actually better because I could taste the other elements like the ginger tempura and pork better.

The noodles were very firm and al-dente which makes you feel fuller when eating chilled dishes.
Also had the salad which is sweet and spicy with the crispy shrimps and shredded cabbage.

Will definitely come back for the chilled noodles.

Malaysian Delights in Central

There are not many places for Malaysian food on the Hong Kong side except for Malacca and the new chain of Malaccan Restaurants.

At Sedap, they offer a good range from Bak Kut Teh, Rices to Stingray fish.

As I have already been here before I decided to order dishes that I have not tried.

If you order the Bak Kut Teh, you get unlimited refills just like the small joints in SSP.
Ordered the chicken feet one because it was the cheapest and I was only interested in trying broth.
It was a bonus that the chicken feet were quite soft.

For vegetables, had the Four heavenly Kings which had beans, okra, eggplant and Petai.
It was an interesting combination of vegetables.
My favourites were the okra and petai beans but the beans were old and stringy as if they have been in the fridge for weeks.
Overall nice but not an even ratio of vegetables because the dish is 80% beans, 10% okra, 7% Petai Beans and 3% Aubergine.
Moving on to the meats, the bittermelon and ribs were heated on a flame.
The bittermelon definitely needed heating as it was hard and crunchy.
As for the ribs in the pot, they were dry and hard so heating it didn't make it better and the broth had this interesting metallic taste which you could smell and taste.

The last dish was Malaysian flavour spare rib with mantou which was so different to the product picture.
It was a strip of crispy belly which was nicer than anticipated.
The sauce was sweet and sour which was quite appetizing.

Finished with the Malaysian style milk tea which I thought was very similar to HK style milk tea.

Overall a great place to gather in the evenings when the office crowd has gone and probably a good place for people who get dropped off by car as it is right next to THE CENTER.

Best Unagi in Central
2019-07-04  34 瀏覽
After trying the unagi at Kane Tsuru Fortress Hill, decided to have it again in Central to see how it fares.
The Central branch is much more spacious where you can see the outside world as well because the door is clear glass while the one at Fortress Hill has more privacy.
Also had the fried chicken and gyozas for an extra HKD28.
Each bite of the unagi was amazing, it was thick and meaty and most importantly without any bones.
It was grilled to perfection glazed in their secret sauce.
The unagi was a little bitter compared to the one I had at Fortress Hill.
On the side, there was broth that was cooked with liver and bone which you can see in the soup.
Overall, the unagi is a winner and definitely recommended.
