[Review 3903] Finally tried Louie Bakery's cake @ 樂怡餅屋 Louie Bakery

10/12/2014
樂怡餅屋 Louie Bakery

Shop G6, G/F, Dawning Views Plaza, Dawning Views, 23 Yat Ming Road, Fanling
https://www.openrice.com/zh/hongkong/review/finally-tried-louie-bakerys-cake-e2409712

I have always wanted to try this cake shop but Fanling is too far away, finally tried it because someone ordered a cake from Louie Bakery for a private party at Ar Hung's delicacies.
The cake was huge and the icing structure was fully supported with a chocolate slab that was pushed into the cake just like how they drive piles in the ground for supporting buildings on top.
Anyway, beneath the fancy icing was a soft sponge cake layered with cream and fruit.
The cake was quite nice and not too sweet.

[Review 3705] One of the surviving bakeries @ 金屋西餅麵飽公司

A few years ago, Choi Hung village was really different but obviously the area is getting revamped to make the value go up.
It is sad for people with relatives who have dementia because they definitely will not be able recognize the place the or the shops.
There are a few still standing but I wonder how long they will last because their second or third generations will probably not want to take carry on the family business.
Anyway, I just went to this shop for fun to look at the old Chinese cakes and decor but ended up getting some chicken biscuits.
They are quite different to the ones at Kee Heung because they are regular in shape and joined together like eggettes so when you eat them you have to separate them.
They were chewy but tastier than Kee Heung because they were not too sweet or salty with a light red beancurd taste.
It was interesting that they had egg tarts with cheese and cream and I wonder if anyone buys them but the owner said Chris Pattern loves them!

[Review 3351] $58 for a giant novelty egg tart @ 泰昌餅家 Tai Cheong Bakery

09/05/2014

https://www.openrice.com/zh/hongkong/review/58-for-a-giant-novelty-egg-tart-e2362266

This could be the most expensive egg tart if it was a real egg tart which costs $58 from Tai Cheong Bakery.
I was attracted by the huge size only and that fact that it was a cake shaped like an egg tart.
To be honest not many egg tarts in Hong Kong taste good including Tai Cheong.

The egg tart picture was posted on All About Hong Kong's FBFP or I would not have known about the size according to the poster because in Chinese it does not indicate it was huge and the English word Jumbo was in small print.
All About Hong Kong is a great FB page that provides the latest information about Hong Kong in English.

Attempted to get it from the Wan Chai branch but it was sold out.

Since I was having dinner at Kornhill Plaza I phoned that branch and asked if it was available.
The lady I spoke to called Exx Lxxxx was reluctant to reserve me the last one because she was afraid that I would not turn up.
When I gave her my English name (not supersupergirl of course), she tried to be smart and challenge me the way it was spelt which no Hong Konger has dared to ask because usually they can't spell or hear it over the phone. WTF!!!
But then it was cool because it shows she has a good knowledge of English or trying to make things difficult and hope that I wouldn't reserve the cake.
She even stressed that the cake was for MOTHERS DAY ONLY and not any ordinary cake.

After all that crap, I got there earlier than the stated time just in case she got schizy and worried    .
According to All about Hong Kong, it is a Jumbo Egg Tart Cake (weight around 1lb), with sponge cake & cream inside the tart crust and a layer of lemon mousse on top.
The crust was really hard and thick which took immense strength to slice it!!
When I sliced it, the texture of the top yellow layer was a bit like soft gelatine pudding but not mousse like!!

From the cross section, you can see layers of sponge, cream and lemon mousse on top.

The taste was nicer than a real egg tart because I don't like HK style egg tarts.
It reminded me of a lemon tart with a thick crust with cream and cake in it as well.
The lemon layer was quite nice which was not too sweet or tart.
It would be great if the whole tart was filled with that lemon layer because I was not fond of the Chinese cream or cake even though it tasted ok overall.

Video of the huge egg tart!!
According to the Tai Cheong staff, only three are sold a day so they better rev it up if lots of people are going to buy it!!

[Review 3274] Egg tart con artist @ 蛋撻王 King Bakery

I only tried these egg tarts because someone wanted to try them.
To be honest, it is so hard to find delicious egg tarts that I like.
At King Bakery they have lots of different egg tarts ranging from durian egg tarts to cheese egg tarts.
Ordered THREE egg tarts loud and clear, but she insisted putting four in the box and tried charging for FOUR!!
Honestly the cheek in people who I have met that try to get you to buy things when you don't agree to buy.

Past experiences:
I was looking at some fruit which I wasn't intending to buy and they bagged it and asked me to pay!!! WTF!!

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Egg tarts:

Again, these egg tarts were just like the ones at V8, the flakey tart pastry was soft and floppy that they collapse when you eat them and the filling was too watery.

[Review 3035] Well hidden cake shop @ 凱施餅店 Hoixe Cake Shop

凱施餅店 Hoixe Cake Shop

Shop B1, 1/F, Nan Fung Plaza, 8 Pui Shing Road, Hang Hau, Tseung Kwan O
https://www.openrice.com/zh/hongkong/review/well-hidden-cake-shop-e2336979

This cake shop is the smallest branch of Hoixe I have ever seen.
It is hidden on the corner near Saizeriya.
Anyway, it is brightly lit and new compared to the other branches.
The chocolate roll looked attractive so bought that for $9.5.
The taste of the chocolate roll was quite nice and not too sweet but the chocolate cream and jelly in the middle was a bit heavy and artificial.

Overall the staff at this branch was helpful and friendly.

[Review 2870] Back for more delicious nougat @ ABC餅屋 ABC Bakery

Thanks to Mjqueen7e or I would not have known about these gorgeous nougats.
I was nearby so got a box.
They also had these cute swan choux puffs which I did not try them.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Nougats:

The nougats were so nice and addictive that I could not stop eating them.
The sweetness was just right and it tastes like a satisfying SNICKERs bar without the chocolate and caramel.
Each nougat is wrapped in edible rice paper and crammed with tons of peanuts.

[Review 2598] A really nice baked mashed potato 超好味 & 超感動

Had a tasting in the afternoon at the Gold Coast which meant there was no time for lunch and I did not even have breakfast that day.

I was so touched (超感動) that Ivycwk got me a baked mashed potato from Sheung Wan's Tin Lok bakery and brought it all the way to TST where we were going to take the coach to the Gold Coast. The experience was quite fun, just like a school trip!

I ate it before getting on the coach and it was really delicious (超好味)!!
It had some cheese, sliced ham and sweetcorn on top and the mash at the bottom was really nice and tasted like instant mash that was not too buttery.

The sauce that was mixed with the ham and sweet corn that tasted similar to Japanese mayonnaise with a hint of salad cream which had a lovely appetizing taste.
The mash was not too dry either.

There is a Tin Lok bakery in between CWB and WC which is in the middle of no-where, so it is difficult to go to that branch.

[Review 2534] Chinese hot cross buns! @ 嘉嘉餅店 Ka Ka Bakery Shop

21/05/2013

北角書局街27號地舖
G/F, 27 Shu Kuk Street, North Point
https://www.openrice.com/zh/hongkong/review/chinese-hot-cross-buns-e2297835

Went past and saw these buns looking like Hot Cross Buns so got some to try.
Interestingly, it has a Chinese name called +bun because of the markings on top.
They also looked like a scone too.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
+ bun:
Basically it was really similar to a scone and before it was baked it had egg yolk brushed on top.
The taste and texture was the same as a scone and very crumbly.
I found it too sweet and after eating half, I did not eat the rest.

[Review 2530] Chinese chocolate swiss rolls @ 凱施餅店 Hoixe Cake Shop

灣仔軒尼詩道380-394號齊安大廈地下F
https://www.openrice.com/zh/hongkong/review/chinese-chocolate-swiss-rolls-hoixe-e2297719

Not that I like this place but the association is limited to a budget of $4 for person.
They used to get egg tarts and butter cakes from this place but no one likes it.
So now they got the Swiss roll which can be sliced and shared.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Chocolate Swiss roll:

Thankfully the chocolate Swiss roll tasted normal, they also had the original one which was disgusting.
This chocolate roll is not nice but at least its not too sweet and the chocolate covers the nasty salty buttercream.
It did not end up going directly to the bin along with the egg tarts and butter cakes.
It is hilarious every month listening to the comments from the Westerners because the East cannot obviously meet the requirements of the West!

Hilarious comments from Westerners:
"It tastes like sock"
"Is it edible?"
"It's disgusting"

But with a budget of $4 per person and limited manpower there is not much you can ask for.

[Review 2507]Seriously delicious Chinese cookies @ 雅園餅店 Nga Yuen Cake Shop

雅園餅店 Nga Yuen Cake Shop
北角丹拿道54號地下C舖
Tanner Road

https://www.openrice.com/zh/hongkong/review/seriously-delicious-chinese-cookies-e2296621

Thanks to Mjqueen7e for these extremely delicious cookies.
I have never tried these Chinese cookies before even though I have bought some for Ivycwk at a different shop.
I am not sure if all the shops taste as good as these or this one was exceptionally good.
They are freshly baked everyday according to Mjqueen7e.
The texture of these cookies are really crumbly, and collapses into fine crumbs in your mouth and the taste was amazing because it tasted like a combination of McVities digestives and McVities Rich Tea biscuits.
The drop of chocolate in the middle made it even more delicious without being too sweet and that part tasted like chocolate covered digestives without the wheat bits.
They seem to be able to keep for days because I had a bag of crumbs left which I ate a few days later and they still tasted fresh.
Usually I never eat biscuit crumbs but these cookies were delicious and crumbled easily so I saved the crumbs.
I wish the size of these biscuits could be slightly smaller to fit in ones small mouth.

Although this review is a bit late, but I saw a bakery shop still selling Christmas cakes in January so I guess its still legit to talk about Christmas!
Anyway, had a gathering and Ivy brought out this huge gingerbread man for us to share!
As it was really big, we had to break it up.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
gingerbread man:

The gingerbread man was quite hard and needed immense force to break it and eat it!
The sweetness was just right with a strong ginger taste!
