[Review 4874] A taste of Beijing in Macau @ 滿堂彩 Beijing Kitchen

I am not familiar with Macau so my friends chose this place and they booked the private room for our early Xmas gathering where there is a special menu for MOP8,888.
The restaurant was big and spacious with high ceilings.

We started with Beijing Kitchen Appetizer Platter which was presented really nicely on a tray.
There was tofu, scallops and jellyfish.
The tofu was my favourite because it gets mashed up with the spring onions to make it tasty.

Next we had the Double Boiled Abalone and Dried Seafood Soup which was a surprise because I have never seen such a big pot of soup for one person!


There were lots of goodies such as fish maw, big abalone and whelks in the soup.

Then came the Traditional Beijing Style Duck which was roasted in a wood fired oven:



I liked the way the duck was served because it was served on three plates, duck with skin, just duck and crispy duck skin on its own.

Next we had the fish and lamb.
The Steamed Garoupa fillets were steamed with Jinhua ham slices.
I really liked the deep fried salt and pepper lamb Gigot because the lamb was soft with crispy.

The Braised Sea Cucumber and Quail Eggs was an interesting combination but both are high in protein.
The sea cucumber was soft in delicious rich gravy.

The braised beancurd with minced pork, prawns, chili and Sichuan Peppercorn was a shocker!

My tolerance for spicy dishes has gone up but this was extremely spicy.
It was so spicy I could use the sauce as chili sauce!

Then we had the Beijing Kitchen Style Braised King Prawn which were big and springy.

The Sautéed bitter melon with salted egg yolk was really nice because I love crisp bittermelon and it had bits of salted egg yolk on it.

There was also a "Beijing Kitchen" Dim Sum Platter in the set which was really good because I got to try the vegetable dumplings.


The dumplings were amazingly tasty with just vegetables and egg.

There were cute roujiamas as well which tasted great with chili sauce.

For dessert we finished wit the Grand Dessert Platter.
You get four desserts and my favourite was the purple potato sago.

 Seasonal Fresh Fruits.

We also tried this new molten black sesame cake with refreshing chili and lime icecream.

To be honest, I was quite full by the end but I hope to come back for more dumplings and try some other dishes.

I just assumed this restaurant served wonton noodles and that was it but they serve almost anything ranging from dim sum to filling dishes.
The menu is in English and Chinese which is helpful and the restaurant is clean and modern.

For food, I decided to try anything but congee or wonton noodles so here was what I had:

Braised goose webs with abalone sauce: $90
 1 讚好

At first I thought the goose webs were not soft enough but they turned out really nice because the sticky chewy texture and the rich abalone sauce was perfect.

Pomelo skin with shrimp roe $50:

The pomelo skin was mushy and flavoured by the light gravy.

E-fu noodles in soup with chopped dried fish $55:


I was really glad this was on the menu because it reminded me of this noodle shop that has closed in WanChai which served tossed noodles with dried fish.

The broth was really nice because the dried fish had a bitter salty taste, which gave the e-fu noodles a nice flavour.

Fish skin:

The fish skin was interesting, it had a springy crunchy texture.

Pork trotters in fermented red beancurd sauce:

The pork trotters were just amazing and you could see that they were vibrant in colour.
They were extremely soft and gelatinous with a strong red beancurd taste and a lovely sticky texture.

Not keen on Cantonese dimsum because the standard around is rubbish but I was impressed with the cups here as they have handles but you still need to rinse the bowls as you assume they are dirty!

The first plate of roast pork was good, it was juicy tender roast pork on top of a bed of sweet soybeans.
Ordered a second plate because it was good but it was worse than the first plate because the cut wasn’t as good as the first and there were only 10 sweet soybeans in it.
The chicken was a surprise because I was not expecting it to come with sweet soybeans but there was a reasonable amount there.

The thing with taro wrapped around it was delicated just like all dimsums. They break when you pick them up!

Although Hong Kong is famous for dimsum, a good majority are not as good as the dimsums in UK because the dumpling skin is weak, the quality of the fillings are not fresh and they are oily and spiked with too much MSG.

I was attracted to this place because one of the reviews showed these cute dimsums and I don’t mind paying more if it is good.

They offer traditional dimsums as well but I was more interested in the modern dimsums.

The restaurant décor was really nice, it had a Western Oriental touch to it with nice wallpapers and window frames.

They were playing old Chinese music that people listen to in the UK.
Tried both the traditional and modern dimsums and personally I liked the modern whereas the traditional dimsums are more suited to local tastes.
I think expats will like this place but a better English menu is needed.

Light and delicate pastry filled with beef in rich black pepper gravy.

These were buns with a cavity in the middle to put the delicious spicy and salty pickles in the middle.

Crispy duck English style:

This is how duck is served in UK, the duck is fried but it is still soft and silky in the middle with crispy skin on the outside.
Overall, it was nice but it would be perfect if they came with pancakes.
Ironically, Charlie's place a few doors away also had this duck but the owners have gone back to UK and now this place has popped up.

Black and white prawn toast:
Creative prawn toasts with the use of black and white sesame together but I wasn't keen because there was processed cheese in the middle.

Black garlic and spring onion oil fried rice:

When it came, it looked like green tea fried rice with red beans but it was actually grounded spring onion that gave it the green colour with pieces of black garlic.
The taste was interesting because it reminded me of the spring onion and ginger oil that you get with roast chicken.

Crispy pork knuckle:


A nice pork knuckle with crispy skin and pork that was not too salty.
