Sweet Chiu Chow Style pastries

Only tried the pastries here because of the interesting paper wrapping.
Inside there are 10 of these pastries.
When you eat them, it flakes everywhere.
The filling inside is starchy and sweet so it depends if you like that sort of thing.
Personally I found it too sweet so I don't recommend it.

Different qualities at different branches

Previously had the luncheon ham chicken bucket at Shun Tak's KFC which was damn good so decided to get it again at Metro City.
The queues are long as usual but luckily they now have the self ordering kiosks but you do get some slow people who take ages.

If this had been my first luncheon ham meal I wouldn't have liked it because the luncheon ham here is dry and overdone while the rice was soggy.
The thing that made up for it were the chips which HONG KONG never had until now.
PERHAPS THEY HAD IT BUT I WAS STILL IN UK.
The fries were chunky and delicious so I can't wait to go back for chips again and try a different branch to see how the quality is.

HOPEFULLY ONE DAY HONG KONG WILL SERVE CHICKEN GRAVY LIKE THEY DO IN UK.

Satay King in Po Lam

Times have changed, crappy Polam and the Tseungkwano area is getting just as expensive as the city.
The shopping mall has been revamped and revamped over and over again and some famous eateries have taken a spot in the mall like Satay King.
Since they opened, the queues have been non stop because people come here for the white curry.

Finally went when it was quieter.

Ordered the signature white pork chop curry and tried this new turmeric pork chop bits curry.
It is obviously trimmed pork chop bits made into curry instead of throwing it away so I didn't expect those pork bits to be good.
A half boiled egg is also part of the curry to make it look like value for money.
I tried the pork chop bits curry because of the turmeric curry sauce and it was quite tasty but I didn't try the trimmed pork chop pieces which were cleverly mixed in this dark curry so you couldn't see if it was meat or fat.
As for the white curry, it was consistently good as before.

Sadly, the only thing that is worth eating is the white curry.

School Food at MCP

Rents are getting expensive so big brands that are struggling in the city have to open in remote areas to survive thus forcing smaller businesses to suffer.
Not that I really give a shat because it's HK but sadly its happening to the world.
At this branch, they only serve the maris so they don't need a big kitchen.

I got my usual favourites which are about a third of the price dining at the restaurant without 10% as well and even cheaper than the takeaway offered at the CWB of School Food.

The taste was ok, both were spicy.
The fried prawn one wasn't that crispy though as it has been there for a while.
The Squid one was springy because of the squid with a sweet and spicy taste.
Overall, they taste ok but not as good as the ones at the restaurant but it is something different for the taste palate in Polam but nothing new as School food has been around for years.

Randomly went here because of the roast beef banhmi.

I didn't have any expectations because the location being in polam so I was expecting everything to be localized.
They did have some interesting items on the menu like the rolls with liver paste.
Dined in for the roast beef banhmi and it was pretty good there wasn't a 10% service charge.
But then I suppose, it is getting competitive with so many new eateries nearby such as the Taiwanese noodle joint, Marugai udon, laksa joint and this Chinese joint.

When it arrived, it looked promising.
The baguette was not burnt with a lovely golden crispy crust while the middle was soft.

The roast beef was convincing, it was pink and you could see the fibres without any connecting tissues.

I was totally satisfied after taking a bite because everything was good from the baguette to the beef.
Most importantly the pickles were properly pickled and not sweet.
There was a dash of mustard which went well with the beef.
The texture of the beef was really tender that I wouldn't describe it as roast beef but a cross between pastrami without the smokiness and slow cooked beef.
I think it tastes better in the banhmi than the pho as the heat will end up changing the texture of the beef.
Will definitely be back and hopefully the beef will be just as good on the next visit

The only thing they could improve is having tissues on the table.

Chocolate and Tieguanyin tea

Most chocolate teas I come across are chocolate with black teas or pu er and chocolate as you need something strong to go with the chocolate. Here they had tieguanyin and chocolate which was different so decided to try it.
I couldn't taste much tea but when I got to the bottom I found a tea bag.
It was just like drinking chocolate however I believe there would be a stronger tieguanyin taste if the tea bag had been steeped longer.

There are not many places that sell Rye Bread in Hong Kong.
St Honore now has it but as expected, it costs more than the average bread in their store

Got three packs to try.
It was was quite good they were sliced as I thought it was a bun inside as you can't really see from the packet.

The bread wasn't sweet by default, but it had raisins and walnuts in it which gave it some sweetness.
Although claiming to be Rye bread, it makes you wonder how much rye is actually in the bread.

To be honest, I didn't expect this to be listed here but I do know they have a noodle joint at Jardines Bazaar in CWB.
Didn't feel like getting some meat so got these cuttlefish things which are made with some cuttlefish, mainly flour and some peas which you can see.
They were quite nice, firm and chewy with the occasional piece of pea in it.
They have fishballs as well but I am not keen on fishballs as they taste sweet whereas this isn't that relatively sweet .

Japanese mapo tofu

Another newish joint in town serving Japanese curries and other stuff.
Had the mapo tofu which was too sweet for my liking and the spiciness levels were too spicy.
You also get miso soup and an appetizer just to make it look like a Japanese set, both not that tasty or memorable like other restaurants.

Not really a fan of noodles so came here as the last straw.Had the flat rice noodles in broth with beef balls, beef slices and those weird pork balls.
The beef slices were good which gave a the broth a nice beef flavour.
The rest of the balls were artificial stuff which help fill you but not nutritional as they just contain flour, sugar and Msg.
Although the soup was good, it was a bit oily because of the beef.
The best thing about this joint is that it was become a food court for other food so come here if you've bought some food from elsewhere LOL!

Hand Shaken teas

The food scene is finally changing at Well On, there are more joints joining the food scene.Initially Lung Cha looked like another tea house serving the same stuff but they serve hand shaken teas which captivated me.

Ordered the taro tea with pearls, grass jelly and Sichuan style beanthread sheets.

The grass jelly was too sweet.
 0 讚好

The beanthread sheets were too spicy so next time I am going to order the non spicy options.
The best thing was the taro tea because you can really taste the taro.
I could have done without the pearls as they get in the way and they were too soft.
To me a drink is a drink and I don't like chewing and drinking at the same time!
Fresh milk would have tasted better as you could taste it was powdered milk or the taro flavouring had creamer/emulsifier in it which makes it not so pleasant.

A1 Bakery is possibly the first bakery in Hong Kong to sell Ruby chocolate cakes.
Prior to that, I've had Ruby Chocolate in the form of Nestle Kitkat and Hot Ruby Chocolate Drink.
Both were fantastic as it tastes a bit like raspberry but better.

The Ruby Choc Cake I got from A1 was not in its best shape as the plastic did not cover the cake properly and the sponge area was soggy.
Apart from the soggy sponge part, it tasted how Ruby chocolate should but the mousse in the middle was a little too sweet.

[Review 7231] @ 唐記包點 Tong Kee Bao Dim

SADLY this wet market has been renovated and this delicious dimsum place had to shut down.
Anyway, there  is now a smaller dimsum joint called Tong Kee Bao Dim which is not really new but one of the leaders in Takeaway dimsum.
Evidently it is very successful with branches everywhere BECAUSE HONG KONG PEOPLE JUST HAVE TO HAVE THEIR DIMSUMS.
However it is interesting why they would have such a branch with a dine in area or perhaps MCP  is encouraging some specific joints to have a dine in area for customers. Currently Kingyo tea, Koi and TP teas which are takeaways have dine in areas at MCP.
A while ago, I overheard a conversation that malls are not being so strict with what shops/restaurants can rent a shop what but saying that another shop in Whampoa who said they were not allowed to sell too much snacks but focusing on other products.
Went here twice as on the first round, I only two items to see if they were edible.
It was a pity I did not take a photo of the gyoza when I got it as there was a biro mark on it which I was definitely not eating.
THE LADY ALMOST ATTEMPTED TO JUST REMOVE THE BLUE SPOT BUT AS IT PROVED DIFFICULT SHE FINALLY EXCHANGED THE GYOZA.
SHE LAUGHED IT OFF SAYING IT WAS THE INGREDIENTS USED WHEN CLEARLY IT WAS PEN INK!
Or perhaps this is their new stylish instaworthy gyoza!
The gyozas were actually quite good because the pork and oil was fresh. The buns are basically the same as the steamed ones but pan fried.
Went there again as the gyozas and buns deemed fit for consumption and this time I got a box and some sauce which was not given to me on the first round.
The satay beef bun was sweeter filled with lots of beef inside.

Sago tart

I'm not really into their bakeries but this time saw two possibly delicious items.
One was savoury and one was sweet.

I was impressed with the savoury one as it looked good with purple onions and cheese with a runny yolk in the middle.
There is a piece of ham beneath the egg yolk which held the egg in place when it was baked.
The egg was runny as stated and overall it was delicious especially when you dipped the bread into the yolk.
The other sweet treat I got was the Sago Tart.
I would definitely recommend this if you don't have a problem with sugar as the pastry base is damn sweet let alone the sago custard filling.
