The new look of The Spice House!

A few months ago I thought they were closed down but luckily they were renovating it because I love their food.

After renovation, the restaurant is more spacious and it looks like the other branch on Amoy Street.

I was relieved to see the menu was the same and had more variety than the Amoy Street branch.
Prices have gone up which is better than seeing them close down.

On the table, they have the same condiments.

Open kitchen area.

The thing that I miss after renovation is the self service water because it was fragrant pandan flavoured water.

Fried rice:

Had the chicken fried rice which was as good as before, the grains of rice were distinct.
Every mouthful was delicious with pieces of tender chicken.
After adding vinegar to it, the fried rice was more appetizing.

[Review 3354] A taste of Chatuchak @ Chatuchak Coconut Icecream

10/05/2014
Chatuchak Coconut Icecream
太子水渠道30-32A地下 3 號舖
Shop 3, G/F., 30-32A Nullah Road, Prince Edward
https://www.openrice.com/zh/hongkong/review/a-taste-of-chatuchak-e2362466

As I haven't been to Thailand before let alone Chatuchak, I was glad that this joint serves the famous Coconut icecream from Chatuchak street.
Ironically, it is located right next to this coconut milk beverage joint which has been there for years.
[I wonder if they are competitors or partners!!]
I specifically came here for the NC coconut jelly but they said it was sold out even though there were two in the fridge which is the same packaging as the one on their FB.
[It was probably reserved for the media].
Sampled their coconut icecream which was not bad.
As I came all the way to MK, decided to try the dessert served in a coconut shell which is basically the famous Chatuchak coconut icecream served in a coconut shell with coconut flesh and a topping.
Some of the flesh is partially scooped for your convenience.
For $25, you get a mini cup of coconut water and a free topping.
The toppings you can choose are coconut gels, cornflakes, palm coconut, red beans and more but I would like to see glutinous rice as an option too.
It was a bit troublesome paying and collecting the dessert because MK is really crowded.
I was given the coconut water which I downed immediately or I wouldn't have hands for the dessert.
The coconut water comes from the coconuts and not the cans displayed beside it.
It was quite good that they gave you that because when they open the coconut the water isn't wasted and it freshens your mouth with a nice coconut aroma before you start the icecream.

After i finished that, the dessert came which was served in a small coconut shell wrapped in some paper.
I chose cornflakes as a topping because the cornflakes were unsweetened.
Beneath the scoop of icecream, there was scraped coconut meat from the shell.
I loved it because the coconut icecream was like icy sorbet with pieces of coconut meat in it with a creamy taste that was complemented nicely by the cornflakes which had a tad of saltiness to it.

As i finished most of the icecream, the coconut meat was pretty hard to scrape using their plastic spoon.

For improvements, it would be good if they scraped all the flesh because their spoons are not made for tough use.

While I was eating there this woman also had trouble finishing off the flesh at the bottom and queried the girl about it.
The staff was really nice and helped her scrape the rest.
However the scraper was not immediately washed and placed back in the holder so when they next use it that person will get her saliva.
Apart from that, it was really delicious because the coconut flesh tastes creamier with more mouthfeel compared to the young coconut flesh which is softer.

Next time I am in MK, I will try the coconut jelly.

[Review 3319] Thai fusion in Hong Kong @ Bug and Bee

20/04/2014
Bug and Bee

G/F to 2/F., 456 Jaffe Road, Causeway Bay
https://www.openrice.com/zh/hongkong/review/thai-fusion-in-hong-kong-e2358382

In most peoples mind, Thai food is just Tom Yum Kung and green papaya but Bug and Bee is the new trend of Thai food from Thailand.
A few years ago Hong Kong was not ready for Thai fusion when it was commonly available in Thailand.
Apart from Bug and Bee, there are other similar restaurants that do Thai fusion such as Greyhound, Glasshouse and many more.
The Bug and Bee menu in Thailand has a bigger range, while the Hong Kong one does not serve all those items.

Curry crab crepe:
This was curry crab served on a crepe.
There were lots of chinese celery, green peppers and real crab meat.
The taste was amazing because there was so much crabmeat in it that was clean and did not have any crabshells.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Spinach crepe lasagne in Tomato sauce:
This was quite cool!! A crepe lasagne with spinach and lasagne sheet layers.
I just felt that the tomato sauce was too sweet.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Salmon and basil quiche:
When it came, the quiche looked flat like a pizza.
The quiche was quite nice and not very eggy, however the salad was not that pleasant because there was so much garlic in the dressing.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
The customer service could be improved because I went there when they newly opened and they did not even give me a free drinks coupon for my next visit.
On my other visit, they only gave me the free drinks coupon because when I checked the bill I found out that I was over charged as there was a bug on their POS system.
The decor and location could be better.

[Review 3304] Tom yum gung with Thai sausage @ 超級食得開心 RA CHA MOO YANG

I have never liked Tom Yum Kung or perhaps I have never had an authentic one.
The only impression I got from it was the strong taste of lemon grass.
The Tom Yum Kung here is quite nice and the vermicelli is the super thin type that absorbs the soup.
However, the broth was not that strong compared to the one I had on a earlier visit.
The Thai sausage slices were thick and peppery.

Under the BKT group, there are two Thai restaurants: Koon Thai and Bangkok Thai.

Koon Thai targets the younger generation while Bangkok Thai offers a nice dining environment.

Anyway, this branch is located really close to Yau Ma Tei's MTR exit C, so you can get away from the dining crowds at Mong Kok whilst still being a few minutes away.

Tom Yum Kung with young coconut (NEW):
 0 讚好

It was quite cool having Tom Yum Kung served in a young coconut.
As well as the usual items you find in Tom Yum Kung, there were lots of young coconut meat in it too which complements the refreshing soup with some sweetness.
I liked the TYK soup because the lemongrass was not too overpowering while there was a strong appetizing tomato taste.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Fried grey mullet with grapefruit (NEW):

This was everyones favourite because the fish was so crispy and the bones were edible and it was coated in a zesty zingy sauce with lots of shallots, Thai spices and huge chunks of sweet and juicy Thai grapefruit.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Prawn sashimi with garlic and chili sauce $98:

I don't normally order this but the prawns were springy complemented by the super hot chili sauce, so don't dip too much.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Stir fried baby cabbage $75:

As well as the usual Thai fare, stir fried baby cabbages is a simple dish to balance out the meaty meal.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Koon Thai Yellow Curry with Beef Flank Stew $82:

The yellow curry was versatile with a sweet but non spicy taste and the beef flanks were soft.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Roti Paratha $33:

The roti paratha was done nicely because it was light and not greasy.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Fried Rice in Chili Paste with Prawn $82:

I was quite surprised by the fried rice because it is not as spicy as it sounds.
I loved it because it was heavily fragranced by Thai basil even though the name suggests it should be chili flavoured.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Eggplant & Scallop cooked with Thai Basil (NEW):

The eggplant and scallops would definitely go well with rice but for improvements I would prefer the eggplant to be sliced before serving.

Sticky Rice with Mango and Coconut Milk $55:

I don't eat mango

I have not had food from this place for a while so decided to pay it a visit again.
The new staff were much nicer and the air conditioning was not as cold as before.

Khao Ob Numlieb
Baked Rice with Minced Pork and Black Olives

As usual, this dish is lovely, minced pork with olives on rice with some soy sauce poured onto it.
The rice at the bottom is nice and crispy while the rice in the middle is soft and fluffy complemented by the minced pork and salty olives.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Gwit Dtee-Oh Kai Kaprao Krob
Spicy Fried Flat Noodles with Chicken and Basil

The noodles were disappointing because they were just oily and tasteless.
The basil leaves were not fresh because they were dry and shrivelled up that there was no fragrant basil aroma.
The noodles which were meant to be spicy were not at all spicy.

[Review 2848] Swank Thai food at Holiday Inn @ Moon Thai

As well as drinks and lunches, they do great Thai food for the evenings.
Located on the second floor of the Holiday Inn hotel, they have lovely dining outside as well as nice tables indoors which are spaced out nicely.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Restaurant photos:

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Strawberry and orange drink:

To start off with, I was choosing a non-alcoholic drink and there were so any choices to choose from.
In the end I chose strawberry and orange which was a lovely concoction of blended strawberry and oranges with a lovely tangy twist.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Raw shrimp:

I have never ordered this before so it was my first time trying it.
It was raw prawns on fresh mint leaves, raw bittermelon, minced green chilis and raw garlic.
They advised us to eat the prawns with the mint, bittermelon and the rest of the items.
The prawns were quite spicy and the mint and bittermelon eased it with minty freshness and crunch from the bittermelon that was not bitter.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Clams and pineapple soup:

The pineapple and clam soup was an interesting combination. I was expecting a clear soup but it was milky because milk was added.
There were lots of basil leaves in the soup and it tasted really sweet with delicious pieces of pineapples.
It was a really nice soup to start off with.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Stir fried fish bladder with shrimp:

The stir fried fish bladder was a little different to what I expecting because the ones I have tried before have not been coated in egg.
This dish was really fulfilling and the air bladders were really soft and tasted similar to Pad Thai because of the egg.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Steamed fish in plum juice:

The steamed fish was really nice because it was heated with with a candle beneath keeping it hot.
I loved the plum juice because it was really sour and when the glass noodles soaked it up, the noodles were so nice.
The fish was really delicate and tasted great in the plum sauce.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Prawns and glass vermicelli pot:

This was the best glass vermicelli pot I have had because the noodles were not oily, each strand was uniformly golden in colour and had a lovely sweet oyster sauce and soy sauce taste in it.
The prawns were huge and meaty.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Chicken Tandoori:

The chicken Tandoori comes in two's or four's and they give you the chicken leg which s nice and tender.
It came with cooling mint sauce which was a perfect sauce for the tasty chicken.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Stir fried baby cabbage:

I loved these baby cabbages which can be cooked in garlic or fermented beans at Moon Thai.
They were crisp and delicate with a gentle grassy taste.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Dessert platter:

A nice platter of Thai dessert, from the left there was layered pudding, coconut pudding, pumpkin pudding and coconut sago pudding.
My favourites were the coconut pudding because it was light and made with coconut water and my other favourite was the pumpkin pudding.
