[Review 2769] Too salty with an insect leg @ 沾仔記 Tsim Chai Kee Noodle

Went to Tsim Chai Kee's because it is quite famous for noodles according to the locals.
It is located next to the police station down the basement.
Ordered the noodles with wontons and beef.

The beef was chewy and heavily covered in flour/soda.
The wontons were big but extremely salty and the soup was salty as well.
Anyway, I think I am unlucky with Chinese food as you can see.

This WAS my favourite eatery because it was cheap and delicious and offers a wide range for chiu chow food.
It was a pity on a recent visit I found a dead intact woodlouse in the food.
Before I black listed it, my favourite was the goose liver and goose blood jelly!
They both tasted strong and the goose liver was moist.
It is hard rating this place because the food is good so I would give it a smile, but since I found a woodlouse I want to give it a crying face.
Anyway I hope it was a one-off and should I bother telling them I found a woodlouse in the food?

Previously came here for lunch during the weekend which was good so came back on a weekday because it was cheaper.

After I ordered the duck confit salad croissant, the popovers were brought over.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Popovers:

The popovers were not as good as the first visit because they had not risen properly.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Duck confit salad croissant:

The duck was nice but the sauce was too creamy and made it sickly and the croissant was quite hard.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Salad:
For the salad section, there was more choice and they had butter lettuce.
The orange and chicory salad was really refreshing.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★

My last review on this place was negative because there were flies, and on this visit these flies were still there ( a month later ) and one stopped by my table for a photo.

Apart from the fly, the restaurant is quite nice.

I went to this snack shop because it looked clean and modern but its hygiene can shock you!
I was going to get the grilled chicken skewers but before I ordered I saw the lady who was grilling them accidentally dropped one on the floor and she did not discard that skewer but she wiped it and put it back on the grill!

So I got the fried snacks instead.

However they were cold!

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Fried fishballs:
These were delicious and boneless, however they were cold and the msg in it was heavy.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Fried red sausages:
These were cold too and the sausages were too chewy.

[Review 1665] Good and cheap vegetarian dishes but rude service @ 珍豆漿

Being vegetarian can be expensive especially when the places serve processed vegetarian items such as soybean patties and similar items.

Some of the Chinese style vegetarian dishes are really unhealthy especially the soft tofu puffs in sweet and sour sauce, curry sauce etc.

I have always wanted to try this place but you have to battle with the busy traffic, air pollution and smokers before you get there.

I like the variety at this place and the prices are fairly inexpensive.

Before coming I called to make an order but as the it was noisy on their end and they couldn’t hear they just slammed down the phone which I thought was a rude.

Anyway, went there another time and ordered the spare ribs with preserved vegetables and rice and I also wanted to get the prawn dumplings however it was discontinued so I changed to some other vegetable dumpling.

When I started eating it, people who did not know this dish was vegetarian asked if it was spare-ribs so they must have looked like spare ribs.

Overall it was really nice and oil free, however the preserved vegetables were not washed and there was plenty of sand in it and the rice had a piece of man made fibre/hair.

hair in the centre of the pic!
As for the dumpling it was fairly nice with sweetcorns and mushrooms inside.

Wanted to try the banana puff so went in for it.
It was tea time so had to get the tea set but the tea that came with it was Hong Kong style milk tea which I do not drink.

Anyway, the banana puff arrived and it smelt quite buttery.

I sliced it to take a cross sectional picture of it and when I was looking at it on my Camera, I realised there ws a piece of hair in it.

close up and cropped from picture above

Anyway, the taste was too sweet and I did not bother eating it because the hair had put me off

[Review 1364] Food and money handled with the same hand! @ 蓮.越坊 The Lotus - Vietnamese Cuisine

This Vietnamese restaurant opened in the summer of 2011, six months on I decided to give it a visit.

There was nothing interesting on the menu, which was why I never tried it.

However when I walked past, the green curry looked good, so I stopped by for a takeaway at their takeaway section.
There was a reasonably long queue, about four people ahead, so after glancing at the food options I went to back of the queue and could not see the operations going on at the counter.

When I was second in the queue, I saw a woman behind the counter wearing an apron, right hand not in gloves, and the left hand wearing thin rubber gloves.
The customer in front ordered chicken, which was hygienically covered in cling film, so the woman unwrapped the cling film and used the gloved hand to put the chicken in the takeaway box, which was perfectly fine.

However when the customer paid, she handled the notes in the same hand that she just used for the chicken!

Anyway, since I was going order the pork chop, I did not think it required her hand to touch the pork chop directly, I assumed there would be food tongs.

But to my horror she used her gloved hand (the hand that just handled the money with) to pick up the pork chop and chicken wings and put it in my takeaway box.

Just imagine if the $50 note I paid with was previously owned by someone who wipes their butt with money, then the poor bugger after me would be eating food that may be contaminated because she touches the money with her gloved hand and then touches the food directly when she serves the next customer!

I also noticed that, the cashier system was just like the wet market in Hong Kong, she did not put the money into the till, but she put it in the pocket of her apron, so every time the customer pays she would fumble with the money and change from her apron.

Anyway, to conclude, the people in front must have seen her handling the money and food directly with the same hand and were ok with it, and if I got food poisoning, the people in front of me and behind me must have got it too.

I think I must lower my hygiene standards for foods in Hong Kong or the general public should upgrade their knowledge on hygiene, OR neither case in Hong Kong because it’s a case of take it or leave it.

It also amazes me that in the summer shops will put chocolate and confectionery products on shelves which are in direct sunlight or near the door with temperatures that can reach mid-thirties where it will melt or go off!

◎◎◎
Green curry with chicken wings and pork chop
The green curry sauce had a strong coconut taste. The pork chop was slightly too salty.
Took a bite into the first chicken wing and it was raw!
Tried the second one and it was also raw!
The chicken wings were bloody as seen on the pictures and the rice was stained by the chicken blood~!
Since I had already lost my appetite by their lovely hygiene, the raw chicken wings were not that shocking!
Overall it tasted OK, the MSG was strong.

The only improvement required is better hygiene standards.

[Review 1356] Tai Hing roast everyday, but not for me @ 太興 Tai Hing

Before the mass advertisements and commercials THE used to be an average place for Chinese food serving Chinese roasts.
To me, they still fare average despite the amount of TVC’s campaigns featuring how you can go there for breakfast, tea, dinner, anytime, any day theme.

Ordered the crunchy roast pork belly in wasabi sauce, which includes soup.

Although the food was not impressive, their customer service was really good, there was a fly in the soup and the waitress apologized and exchanged the soup.
{It was probably the same soup brought back with the fly removed, but at least they said Sorry and offered to exchange it, which is better than other restaurants.}

I did not like the food much, because the rice beneath the meat was fried rice and baked again with the pork on top, it made the rice dry and greasy.
The pork was chewy and not fresh, and there was a strong overnight pork odour to it.

I would have preferred it if it was plain rice and Roast BBQ pork in wasabi as opposed to pork belly.

Although I did not like it, but it would be a good source of calories for those who need it, especially with the combination of fried rice and roast pork belly for the cold winter.
