[Review 386] More improvement needed still @ Trafalgar (灣仔)

Trafalgar 27/08/2009
灣仔駱克道54-62 號博匯大廈5樓
5/F, The Broadway, 54-62 Lockhart road, Wan Chai

After my first visit when it had opened not so long, the food took ages so I waited longer till my second visit.

On my second visit, I came with a group of four people.

We were arranged a four people table which sounds reasonable, however the Daily menu was placed at a rather odd spot, behind the chair.
If you see the picture, the customer will be blocking the menu view, also not an appropriate place to place the menu, firstly people can’t see through people, and the person infront of the menu would need to turn their head 360 degrees to see it.

The waitress who served us, had rather funny English with some chinese mixed into it, she was introducing the dishes on the board, saying:

“A CHAN is chicken leg with baguette, B CHAN burger, C CHAN is ………, D CHAN”
notice the chinese word CHAN mixed up with the English!

We ordered the chicken leg with baguette, Burger with cheese, Chili Con Carne, Cheese and Spinach quiche.

For starters we chose minestrone soup and ham and apple salad, which was also funny as the waitress pronounced it as “Manistrone soup”.

Anyway the starters came, the soup was ok, the salad was quite nice, thick mayonnaise sauce with diced apples, ham, strawberry and almond flakes.
Then the main dishes came, when she put down the dishes, she verbally said the names of the dishes, however the Chili con carne which she said was "chili con carne" was actually Chicken Tikka Masala, also entered wrongly as Chicken Tikka Masala on the bill. It was also much more expensive than the Chili con carne. We wanted to tell them at the time, but my friend did not want to waste time and have the right dish cooked, he also thought there wouldnt be much of a price difference.

As for the chicken with baguette, I think it should be written as chicken thigh not chicken leg, because chicken leg is normally a drumstick with bone.

For the cheese and spinach quiche, the contents on the plate was rather empty, just a few pieces of greens, fried onion rings, and the quiche. The onion rings tastes better than the ones at Outback, not so greasy.
The quiche was not firm at all, I thought there was too much spinach in it. The cheese in the quiche was very creamy and tasted like Camembert.

Anyway we were nearing the end of our lunch, and drinks were served. Then we were given complimentary fruit.
All our cutlery were taken away, so we had to eat it either with fingers or toothpicks.

Lastly we got our bill and realised she put Chili con carne as Chicken Tikka Masala, but anyway if you’re an experienced waitress, even if you input the wrong dish for the chef, you should know what the dish is when you serve it.
Also we noticed something amusing on the bill, for my friends burger with cheese had the remarks
“ > no sausage, want cheese instead Add sausage”

I doubt burgers have sausages in it anyway, unless its a sausage muffin like Mcdonalds.

If I had no choice in Wanchai I would probably come here again, but my friends have certainly blacklisted it.

Good old McDonald's!!

Although their price range is not that expensive, since its a big chain, all their food are rigorously tasted tested to cater for most people to like.

I got my lovely black forest cake, which always tastes consistently good with appropriate amounts of cherry in the cream. The grated chocolate is not too much or less.

To finish it off, I got the Mocchochino with a frothy foaming top.

Usually I go to Pacific coffee more, but came here to try the cheese and ham roll and the sausage roll.

The sausage roll actually tastes better than the pacific coffee one.

The cheese and ham roll, is actually pita bread rolled with ham and cheese and heated. I thought it was a bit small in portion and expensive for that price.
The cheese inside is basically the processed cheese slices like the ones found in burgers.

[Review 383] The usual noodles 香港仔新記魚蛋粉 (灣仔)

This noodle joint is apparently quite famous in Hong Kong, so I decided to try their beef belly and flat rice noodles.

I liked the way the spring onions was separated on the spoon, so that it remains crunchy.

The noodles and the beef was not that outstanding, and it tastes like the noodles and beef you can get in other joints.

But anyway, at least I have tried it.

[Review 382] Afternoon K Tea at CEO @ CEO Neway (銅鑼灣)

Usually I go in the evening for the Buffet, but the afternoon tea is just as good.

There is a lot of variety, for the not so hungry, there is a lighter selection such as cakes and puddings, and there are savory snacks too such as fried chicken drumstick and fries.

For people who want a filling afternoon tea, you can also order rices or noodles.

This time ordered steak and rice, and octopus balls.

Steak and rice: strong in pepper sauce.
Octopus balls: In comparison to the octopus balls elsewhere, these ones are potato based, hence more crispy and have a nice starchy filling inside.

I am such a fan for Pacific coffee products, it is rare for me to dislike anything there.

One thing I do not buy is coffee, but I do drink tea.

I got the lemon and apricot cake as a light snack, its not too sweet, and there are lovely bits of apricot in it.
It is not too greasy either.

The date on the packaging is rather memorable, because it consists of consecutive numbers.

[Review 380] Lemon pasta @ Carnegies (灣仔)

Carnegies have made a great improvement since my last visit, they will display their menu outside early in the morning, so you can walk past and see whats on for lunch.

Also it is much appreciated they update their weekly menu on facebook.

I chose to eat today, because of the mixed mushroom spaghetti in Lemon juice and parsley sauce.
For starters ordered the romaine salad with cajun chicken

Mains:Grilled Chicken Steak with Garlic Sauce, French Fries, Carrots & Snow Peas
and Mixed Mushroom Spaghetti in a Lemon Juice & Parsley Sauce

Dessert: Coconut banana fritters with Rum sauce.

Cajun chicken salad:
pieces of romaine lettuce on a bed of sliced chicken breast covered in spicy Cajun sauce.

The bread was cute, served in a dimsum container, the bread was crusty and chewy, and the butter was nice and salty.

Grilled chicken:
juicy chicken with french fries and veg, the chicken was thigh meat. ( I thought is was slightly Chinese the way it had been cooked)

Lemon pasta:
pasta cooked just right and the sauce was nice and lemoney, certainly worth choosing today to come. However the parsley could have been chopped finer since the menu said lemon and parsley sauce. It was more like a sprig of parsley.

Banana fritter:
Slightly over fried, not so much coconut, but the rum sauce was good, slightly bitter.
reminded me of the Caribbean.

Overall the menu is well suited for westerners and Asians, since one dish will be western, and the other sounds western but cooked in Chinese style.
