Saw a review on this place earlier showing pictures of Fish maw and sharks fin at cheap prices so decided to give it a try.
There was one in Mong Kong I intended to try, but that place and food didn’t convince me enough, this restaurant looked reasonably clean and specialised at these delicacies.

Anyway picked the set for two with braised duck feet with fish maw, and sharks fin soup.
The set also includes a choice of two Chinese dishes, so picked sweet and sour fish, and steamed tofu with scallops and black beans.

First to arrive was the sweet and sour fish, then came the sharks fin soup. The soup was thick clear broth with chinese mushrooms, chicken, sharks fin in it. The taste was ok on its own, you didn’t have to add any red vinegar or sesame oil.
Tofu was the last to arrive, and after all that strong tasting food, the tofu was a bit tasteless.

The braised duck feet was nice and soft, the bones were easily removable, the fish maw was big in size, but needed pepper to balance out the fishy taste.

The sweet and sour fish was really good too, the portion could have been bigger.

However the cost of the set was $258, so if you exclude drinks, main dishes, the fish maw and sharks fin is worth around $80-100, so that’s $40-50 per person for fish maw and sharks fin.
I think this place is a nice place for people who want to have those delicacies at a low price, but don’t expect it to be as good as the expensive ones. What you pay is what you get!

[Review 623] Taiwanese sausages @ 香腸世家 Sausage Family

When I first saw these sausages, they were nothing like the German sausages, Frankfurters, or UK sausages, in fact they had a clear glazed skin with the appearance of the Chinese Wax sausages but not shriveled up, I didn’t try as I assumed they would taste like that. I had no idea they were Taiwanese sausages.

Then after I read reviews about them I decided to try them because of the interesting flavours.

According to the Taiwanese website, the flavours are: blue tuna, black pepper, red wine flying fish roe, ink fish, Sakura shrimp, sorghum liquor, flying fish roe, Sichuan chilli, iron egg, bonito fish and cheese.

The joint here only served four of the above: Blue tuna, Flying fish roe, Sakura shrimp with wasabi, and ink fish.
I suppose the flavours served here are the ones I would have picked, especially egg in a sausage is a bit strange. Anyway before I made my way here, I was thinking which two to try, as trying all would be a bit much. Luckily you could get a stick with three flavours: flying fish roe, blue tuna and squid ink.

Taste: All have the soft firm texture like British sausages, however they all have that sweetness taste expected in Asian foods.
They did not contain a lot of fatty bits as I had imagined.

I thought the tuna one was quite good, had lumps of tuna in it, so was the one with roe.
Next time I need to try the Sakara shrimp too, and maybe see those little shrimps embedded in the sausage.

All the cooked sausages were laid on this area with tiny white pebbles, I actually want to know if they will wash these pebbles, or reuse them everyday!!

Anyway no photograph was taken, a bit difficult in that busy street!

The set dinner on offer wasn’t that interesting so ordered a pizza and baked mushrooms with tuna, and truffle.

The pizza is the usual taste, ordered the tuna one; hence it had a strong canned fish tasted.

As for the mushrooms, if you have been to Pizza hut in UK, they are quite similar; the UK Garlic mushrooms are buttery, and surrounded in melted butter sauce.
The HK ones are less oily, but enhanced in taste by the truffle and tuna.

[Review 621] supersupergirl woz here! Chips Republic

When I first heard about this place, I was instantly reminded of Burger Republic, the logos are similar too, when I saw the menu, it totally confirmed the same owner owns them.
The Bailey’s milkshake is served at both places.

Anyway, I came here especially for chips and curry sauce, something I haven’t had for ages, the last time I had it was in this little food stall called Rainbow English Chinese Fast Food in Stratford market in East London, I wonder if it is still there.
Apart from chips with curry sauce, I also got chips with cheese and mayonnaise.

The chips were nice and crispy, and the sauce was perfect especially the curry sauce.
The other one with cheese sauce was also good, it is not melted cheese, but cheese sauce, similar to the one at Burger mix, except the Burger mix one is runnier.
The cheese and mayonnaise were both quite thick in texture, so it covered the chips nicely.

I would have loved more sauce, I love chips drenched in sauce, especially curry sauce or gravy.

For drinks, had Baileys and blueberry milkshake, both were very smooth and cold, without fine ice crystals, it was light and foamy too, but weighted down by the milk.
The baileys didn’t taste that strong of baileys, but it was good, and the blueberry was better than expected, it was made with real blueberries, and there were quite a few whole berries in it.

Whilst we were there, they gave away samples of other milkshakes and chips, so I tried the Sesame one, I actually avoid sesame, but this one tasted really good, perhaps it was made in a British way! I could taste bits of Oreo in the Sesame milkshake, so I think that enhanced it.
There were other flavours too: Strawberry, chocolate green tea, coffee, sesame, green tea.

As for the chips, there were other flavours too, chilli con carne, Cajun, gravy and mozzarella.

For improvement: I think the customers could be given a choice of crispiness of i.e. just crispy, crispy or very crispy, as some like it soggy, some like it crispy, and I like them crispy at the beginning and then gradually soggy by the sauce.
It is a different culture in Hong Kong, as Chinese people have to eat crunchy. hard crispy burnt things!

Also there was news from the owner that Burger Republic may be re-locating, I hope they serve chips and curry sauce too, another place for me to get chips and curry sauce as well as from Elements.

Again, another one of those restaurants that I never intend to try, but I was clueless for food, so my eye caught their menu and I suddenly felt like trying.

The take out price is cheaper than dining in.

Got a take out, since it would be too noisy in there anyway, the food wasn’t that spectacular, the rice was a bit hard, also there was soup included.
So just another restaurant for me to say “been there, tried it”!!!

[Review 619] Old Sham vs New Sham @ 清真夏姆阿拉伯餐廳 Halal SHAM Dining

18/01/2010
清真夏姆阿拉伯餐廳 Halal SHAM Dining
北角建華街16號地下A號舖
Shop A, 16 Kin Wah Street, North Point
https://www.openrice.com/zh/hongkong/review/old-sham-versus-new-sham-e2057685

This used to be called "Sham", an Islamic fast food restaurant serving grilled/fried chicken with rice/chips/bread.

My review here before renovation:
http://www.openrice.com/restaurant/commentdetail.htm?commentid=2023517

After my first meal at SHAM Fast Food I was hooked, and went twice, but then the third time is was closed for refurbishing.
When I found out it had re-opened, I was so keen to eat that food again, however, from the new pictures, I realised it wouldn’t be fast food.

I walked in, sat down, browsed the menu, ordered the Set dinner that includes a choice of starters, mains, dessert and soup, however the waitress with bad English said that the main dish was fixed, and also you could only choose one dish.

Their paragraph regarding the set menu, requires cautious browsing, if you skim it, it looks like you can pick two dishes from the chef mains.

That set costs $190 per person, which is quite a jump from the prices before as a fast food chain, the prices before ranged from $13-$85.
The most expensive one at $85 was a family size meal including 3 drinks, 3 pieces of bread, fries, and chicken.

Anyway, after I was told the choice of mains was fixed for the set, I picked other stuff on the menu, the waitress took my order and asked what about the other person, so I said we were sharing it.
Then after 1 minute, she came over again, and said there was a minimum order of $100 per person, and the current bill came to $105.

IF IT HAD CLEARLY STATED THAT ON THE MENU OR DISPLAYED IN THE RESTAURANT I WOULDNT HAVE BEEN SO ANNOYED.

But anyway, I chose other stuff to make up for the $95, after noting my order, she said that it still wasn’t enough!

For crying out loud! My arithmetic is Sham Shat, but hers was more sham shat than mine.
I had to verbally add it in front of her!
I said the existing bill was $105, and the addition of the hummus was $30, the falafel was $40 and the chicken wings were $30, so that’s $100 right.
Then after she froze there for a few seconds, she said Oh yea!

Finally sorted for ordering, I was waiting for the food.

The hummus came first, which was a generous portion with very hot bread, then came the falafel, it was slightly dry, but nice.
The main dish I ordered was the chicken Taook with potato puree and salad, the chicken thigh was tender and juicy, and the potato puree which looked like paste tasted very interesting, it was not starchy at all, the texture was a bit like Mado's ice-cream.

Was then served the Arabic rice, which tasted as good as before, with bits in it.
There are several versions, sometimes it has peas, this time it had short pieces of noodles.

Overall the food was really really good, but if you have been here before, its like paying 150% of the fast food price served here before, although the food is slightly finer with out the chips, drinks etc.
The chicken wings were not spectacular, didn’t taste of lemon or parsley, as stated.

While we were there, another customer came in, after he ordered, he was told about the minimum charge, at that time we found out that waitress was from China as she spoke mandarin, and her accent was a bit different to the English accent of HK people.

That moment, I really wanted to FAKE UP some mandarin and ask her, where is the shop or on the menu it saids about the minimum charge, but I figured, I could just fake it enough in mandarin to ask, but probably not understand her reply.

Finally finished the meal, there was no 10% service charge, but I didn't expect there to be any.
When we left, took a quick glance to see if there was any notice for minimum charge, but there wasn’t, only when we were outside the restaurant, we found this one piece of paper stuck on the front door stating the charge, AS if you would notice that! The first thing I would look at before going in a restaurant is the menu, and if there is anything in there I want to eat!

Overall I felt the service was not that good, if she spoke better English, it would have made communication much easier. Secondly, they need to make that sign more prominent in the restaurant or menu too regarding minimum order.

[Review 618] Singmalay part 19 @ 肉骨皇 Bak Kut King

From previous reviews, there were comments about McDull, this handsome guy, and some waiter who has an attitude that can instantly change from smiley to sultry and vice versa.

When I got there, was greeted by a waitress, she sat us in the middle of the restaurant, when clearly the other tables were empty, so we changed to one of the tables on the side.

There was only three prominent staff I could remember, the rest were not that memorable, one was female, one which I believed was the one with dipole attitude, but that day I only managed to see the blank face, then the other one which was probably the handsome one.

Originally I wanted to go for the set, but two items were not available, the Salmon carpaccio, and the coconut fried prawns, these were replaced by two less favourable options.
So I ordered separate items, ordered the Prawn Laksa with Taiwanese “Sun Chuk” vermicelli, Penang pork bone tea, and Pan-fried goose liver with tamarind sauce.

Laksa:
For $42, it was a good price, and there were six prawns, the portion was rather big too.
Finally I had found a laksa that is as good as the one at Katong, also the vermicelli is better here, they used “Sun Chuk” vermicelli, which is thinner and springier.

Pork Bone tea:
The portion of pork was very stingy, only 2-3 pieces and literally bones. In comparison to pictures posted by other open rice users, there were less ingredients in ours, there were no tree bark slices as shown below by an OR user:

http://www.openrice.com/UserPhoto/photo/1/11O/007FZA8FA7F71B212A6E92l.jpg

Photo supplied by restaurant
http://www.openrice.com/UserPhoto/photo/1/YP/006UWC451351FD6C5D0797l.jpg

as with the photo supplied by the restaurant, there is wolfberries, none in ours.
In both pictures, there is more pork too.
Taste wise, there was a strong herb taste, but none for dong gwai. The taste was more prominent when it had cooled down.

Goose-Liver:
It reminded me of liver with berry sauce at Mr Steak buffet, both with fruity sauces.
The liver here had an exotic taste with the sourness of Tamarind and pineapple slices, also the pineapple was sliced differently than usual, in horizontal slices. The texture of the pineapple was not crunchy, but slightly soft.

Overall, I felt the Laksa was better than the pork bone tea, so not really king of Bak Kut at all.
Singmalay food to be continued...... Shiok maybe?
