I was not expecting their bakery to taste nice because I thought they were famous for egg tarts.
Their prices are slightly lower than other bakeries too.
I got a savory cheese bun and a chiffon cake.
The cheese bun was better than I expected, it had proper cheese inside, although the dough is the typical chinese dough that is dense.
The chiffon cake was disappointing, too sweet.

[Review 814] Potato balls @ 臺北站 Taipei
13/07/2010
臺北站 Taipei
灣仔灣仔道146號明豐大廈地下
G/F, Ming Fung Building, 146 Wan Chai Road, Wan Chai
https://www.openrice.com/zh/hongkong/review/potato-balls-e2099639
Taipei specializes in drinks, but I came here for potato balls.
Not many places serve fried potato balls, the one that does is in the New Territories called Breadman, but its too far away.
I like potato balls because of the light outer crunch and starchy potato filling inside if its fried just right.
Here they offer many sauces to go with it:
Wasabi mayonnaise, ketchup, mushroom and herb sauce, cheese, sour cream,
I chose cheese and wasabi mayonnaise.
The cheese was nice, but it wasn't cheese sauce, so it went hard after it had cooled, otherwise it tasted good as it was cheddar cheese.
The wasabi mayonnaise didn't taste that nice, I think the wasabi spoilt it because it is so Asian.
Next time I will choose mushroom sauce, but you need to ask them what the sauces are, as the English translation and Chinese menu are a bit different.
DEEP FRIED PHOTO BALLS!
Apart from spud snacks, they have fried mussels, scallops and squids, the scallop and squid sound ok, but trying to imagine how a fried mussel would taste~
The bad thing about this place, there is no where to indulge the food, it is people, traffic, smokers everywhere.
It is hot enough already, and they have four spotlights in broad daylight to grill you!!

[Review 813] American festival @ TASTE

Taste is generally a good place to get international foods, although GREAT is much better.
They did an American Festival promotion, the American products I got were Cashew fruit juice, Coffee fruit juice, Pomegranite soda, chocolate cherries, and some other items, which were interesting too for this review.
CASHEW FRUIT JUICE:
Had an exotic fruit taste with some nutty sediment in it.
Apart from that the packaging was great!
The colour was cloudy peach.
Quoted from the website: http://www.onenaturalexperience.com/
The Cashew Fruit has two parts – the Fruit and the Nut.
The nut actually grows from the bottom of the “Cashew Apple.”
The Cashew Apple is an oval or pear-shaped fruit that develops from the receptacle of the cashew flower. Called the Cashew Apple, it ripens into a yellow and/or red fruit about 5–11 cm long.
COFFEE FRUIT JUICE:
There was only a faint taste of coffee, more strong on the strawberry.
HANSEN POMEGRANITE juice:
Nice concept, however this one was sugar free, hence I felt its sweetness tasted artificial.
CHOCOLATE COVERED CHERRIES:
Apart from cherries, they also have blueberries, strawberries, almonds, cashews.
The chocolate covered cherries are nice and plump, about the size of a fresh cherry but flatter. The chocolate coating is a rich glossy brown.
The dark chocolate goes well with the sweet cherry, and neither elements overpower each other.
The cherries inside are dried sour cherries, with a center that is soft and moist with a nice tart flavor that contrasts well with the dark chocolate coating.
It is a bit like eating a chocolate covered raisin, however there is more bite to it due to the cherries size.
PEARL ROYAL COCONUT:
I was so surprised they don’t sell coconut water in HK, they can be readily found in UK under the brand of Rubicon and in any indian/pakistani shops.
The similar products here usually contain young coconut pieces and sweetened to the extent that it is syrupy.
I really liked this design, a plastic young coconut with a carton inside.
BROCCOLI CHIPS:
These are vacuum fried broccoli, which just looks like dehydrated pieces of broccoli.
I suppose it is more interesting than eating crisps and just a tad healthier eating a real piece of veg than reconstituted fried potato.
Next time, I would like to experiment putting dried cheese powder on it resulting in cheese broccoli in snack form.
Greenday Thai also does other snacks too such as banana chips, pineapple chips, taro chips, okra chips.
The packaging was done very nicely, very western appeal with all the nutritional values, and at least with perfect English too.

[Review 812] Cranberry squeeze @ Shake'em Buns

Shop 5, J Residence, 60 Johnston ROad, Wan Chai
https://www.openrice.com/zh/hongkong/review/cranberry-squeeze-e2098793
Got the cranberry squeeze to cool myself down.
The cranberry squeeze consists of blueberry, raspberry sherbet, pineapple and cranberry juice.
It was nice and slushy, a rich dark magenta in colour.
All the elements worked well together especially the blueberry which mellowed out the sourness of the cranberry.
The overall taste was refreshing and not syrupy.

Out of all Häagen-Dazs products, I felt this one was the best.
It was frozen form of Millefeuille, the custard had been replaced with rich custard ice-cream.
The dessert was topped with crushed flakey pieces and layered with custard ice-cream and raspberry sauce.
If there were more layers of flakey pieces, it would have tasted better.
From experience, I would recommend eating it after a while rather than rock hard frozen.

[Review 810] Cheesy octopus crunchies @ 味千拉麵 Ajisen Ramen

Shop 104-108, First Floor, Sun Hung Kai Centre, Wan Chai
https://www.openrice.com/zh/hongkong/review/cheesy-octopus-crunchies-e2098543
Got two of the new promoted items, the tempura stuffed mushrooms with mashed potato and fish roe, and the noodles with the cheesy octopus crunchies.
Stuffed mushrooms:
Piping hot, and the shittake mushroom were very juicy.
It was surprising the mashed potato had a very oceanic taste due to the fish roe.
The noodles taste the same as usual, however the fried octopus with cheese was interesting, the cheese texture was like mozzarella, and it was wrapped in beancurd skin and then coated with batter and fried.
It was slightly over fried because the outside was a little too crunchy and brown.
There wasn’t much taste to it, especially the mozzarella.

[Review 809] Rubbish set dinner @ 百伏棧台灣小吃 Greenland Taiwanese Cuisine

灣仔莊士敦道181號大有廣場2樓201號舖
Shop 201, 2/F, Tai Yau Plaza, 181 Johnston Road, Wan Chai
https://www.openrice.com/zh/hongkong/review/unworthy-set-dinner-e2098539
Ordered the set dinner for two at $178 with 10% service charge on top as well.
The set comprises of two drinks, bittermelon and spareribs soup, chicken and flat noodles with chili sesame sauce, marinated mix, and pork and lotus patty.
For that price, you can have a relatively decent meal at other places.
Soup: this was the best item only, there were soya beans and tiny mussels in the broth which gave it the rich flavour.
Chicken with flat noodles: It was very spicy, basically it tastes the same as the Shanghai version but spicier.
Marinated mix: This was the most worthless dish, a mix of cheap crap, such as tofu, intestines, fatty chicken wings, and chicken gizzards.
The tofu was the worst, it tastes like a cigarette ash!
Pork patty:
As soon as it arrived, you could tell they used pork that wasn’t fresh, and it badly needed condiments to cover it up.
The patty was very fatty and ground with offal.
