Was given a flyer when I walked past, so studied the variety for the All u can eat lunch buffet. It costs $160 per person plus 10% service charge.
For that price, you can get reasonable all you can eat food at places such as Kaneda and this place in Central.
I chose this menu, because the menu was quite extensive, eg sea urchin handroll, goose liver on toast etc.
When I sat down, there were not many patrons there, the waitors laid our table with sauces and green tea.
I looked at the All u can eat menu, it was so flimsy, it was sheets of paper inserted into a plastic album, it had English, Japanese and Chinese, and it was hard to turn the pages as they kept sticking together.
The English-Chinese translations were a bit messed up, some meanings were different.
Anyway like any All you can eat places, I was expecting some pieces of paper for you to tick or write which dishes you want.
At least 4 items were not available, it should have been taken off the list or before we sat down we should have been told.
Unavailable items:
Spicy whelk meat
Pineapple and pumkin salad
Scallop cutlet
Goose liver on toast
When items were served, some items were served sparingly, only piece of surf clam with generous pieces of other sushi.
For the sea urchin handroll, only one was served per order.
If they had two prices for lunch and dinner, they should have separate menus instead of misleading people.
Ordering was difficult, I had to flick their flimsey booklet and order, usually the first round, you want to try everything, but the problem is their booklet pages are stuck together and it was a task trying to remember what to order.
The translations were messed up too, some of the chinese and english were different.
The menu was slightly misleading too, because some paid items were also on the all you can eat page, but you get charged for those items.
The fried items came first, some were overfried, especially the tofu, looking like a cochcroach. The banana tempura was worth trying.
The salmon sushi was not that good, because there was still silver membrane left on it.
The clams were totally tasteless, despite it was presented nicely with fake sharksfin.
The congee was ok.
Overall the environment was ok, the staff were ok, only the availablity and menu was misleading.
The price was too expensive considering the low range of choice.
The paper lantern was interesting, the paper slowly ripping off leaving the lightbulb.

[Review 835] Tiny birds anyone @ 廣東燒味餐廳

Tiny birds anyone
廣東燒味餐廳 (灣仔)

I am quite surprised that no one has written about this place, its been here for quite a while.
In a way, this shop is located on a street full of bus stops, so people are either walking along this road, waiting or getting off buses like a train station.
When I went in there, it felt like some place where people were waiting, most of the patrons were mandarin speaking, maybe it is related to the "Guangdong" part of the name or the food.
For food, one of their roast combinations is quite unique, that when I saw a picture of it from another branch, I immediately knew it was from this place.
Also those tiny honey roasted yellow flower birds (蜜燒禾花雀), are served here, which dont seem to served elsewhere.
The roast set I got contained crispy roast suckling pig, chinese red sausages, honey roasted chicken wing and salted egg.
The whole combination was so good that even for a picky person like me, there was nothing that I didnt like in that set.
Basically the stars of this dish are meant to be the in house roast suckling pig and chicken wings, and for the red sausages and salted egg, they cant really go wrong as they are sourced from food suppliers.
The roast suckling pig had an even layer of meat and fat, and most importantly the skin was crispy.
The red sausages were slightly dry, but still tasted nice, and the chicken wings were slightly hard but manageable to eat and rest tasted how it should.
The roast set cost $40 which is slightly more expensive than other places.
Also tried the tiny birds merely because they looked cute.
At that size the giblets were probably still in there, so I tore off the tiny legs and upper torso, and it tasted quite nice, although there were some little bones.
I also tried eating a whole one including the giblets, and it had a slight bitterness to it, tasted like a chinese wax sausage, with a crispy tough exterior skin and soft insides bursting out!
The sauce for the pork was runny, and could have been fresher, as it tasted a bit sour.
Then I tried the chicken livers, this was slightly below average because they didnt taste fresh and were rather hard, over roasted and burnt.
As for the soup, it tasted a little strange. The chinese dishes are ok.
Overall the restaurant is ok, but feels like China, and the person at the pay desk could have been nicer. With this attitude, it turns away potential customers.

[Review 834] Brown sugar mochi Portuguese egg tart @ 肯德基家鄉雞 (KFC) Kentucky Fried Chicken

I am not a fan of Portuguese egg tarts at KFC, firstly because they are greasy and secondly it tastes very eggy.
However the mochi egg tart was fantastic, there was brown sugar mochi at the bottom which lessens the eggy taste, and I love brown sugar.
Before I tried it, I could smell brown sugar/caramel scent.
Then when I tried to cut it, the layer of brown sugar mochi was extremely elastic.
I had some fun stretching it to see when it would break, but from the photo you can see that it had very high plasticity!!
Its texture was like sturdy gelatin rather than the mochi type.
The only thing that let it down was the base, it was burnt, and made the egg tart taste bitter.

[Review 833] Nice interior @ Myogurt

Myogurt (已結業)
灣仔灣仔道177-179號保和大廈地下E舖
Shop E, G/F, Pao Woo Mansion, 177-179 Wan Chai Road, Wan Chai
https://www.openrice.com/zh/hongkong/review/nice-interior-e2105991
There are two froyo shops on this street and frankly this one stands out!!
The other one uses an orange tone, whereas this one has white and orange for its logo differientating it from other froyo's in HK.
Berrygood: white, red, pink
Bestberry: white and pastel circle
Yogurtime:white, light green and brown
Tuttimelon: pink, peach and green
The logo for this place is very cute, with two faces and a curly lock of hair on its head, the green leaf on either sides of the word "myogurt" gives it some bling, like fresh leaves sprouting with a young refreshing feeling.
The curly fonts match the curly lock of hair on the logo.
I was also lucky enough to meet the young and talented designer of this place too.
Inside the shop, it is nice and vibrant, although the bar chairs were slightly too high, as there was not much space between the seat and table hence slightly cramped for people with larger thighs.
Anyway, there were two yogurt flavours, original and passionfruit.
Tried both, the original was slightly too sweet, but the passionfruit was just right.
The taste reminded me of the supermarket dairy yogurt, and it tasted more like mango than passionfruit.
For toppings I chose grapefruit, which went nicely with it.
As an improvement, it would be good if they labelled the toppings, although some are pretty obvious eg strawberry, etc.

[Review 832] Irish boxty pancake @ Delaney's Wanchai

With so many pancakes in HK, or known as crepes for the French, Boxty is the Irish savory version.
Boxty, is a traditional Irish potato pancake served wrapped around beef, squash and sauce. The dish is popular in Northern Ireland where it is know locally as poundy or poundies; also known as potato bread in Ulster).
There are many different versions but all contain finely grated, raw potatoes, the common version consists of finely grated raw potato and mashed potato with flour, baking soda, buttermilk and sometimes egg.
The mixture is fried on a griddle pan for a few minutes on each side, similar to a normal pancake. Boxty was seen as part of the local culture in the areas in which it was made, that the following poem was written-
Boxty on the griddle,
Boxty in the pan,
If you can't make boxty,
You'll never get a man.
Ordered the beef and Guinness one, which consists of beef taken from the carvery and rich gravy sauce and Guinness.
The guinness gives it a slight bitter taste, and the pancake is not as light as the pancake/crepe version, it is slightly thicker and moist due to the potatoes.
There are lot so shredded onions in it too, which is a complement with gravy and beef.
Apart from beef, there is also chicken, vegetarian and lamb to choose from.
It would be interesting if they had chili con carne or Mexican fillings inside too.

Maxim's has come up with a cute plastic container for their Hong Kong style tea range.
There are three flavours: Original, caramel and coffee.
Basically, the tea is the same but caramel jelly pieces and coffee bubbles are added to the other ones.
The tea is served as a cold drink, and it basically has the taste of typical HK tea, namely the strong condensed milk and bitterness.
The caramel bits were slightly too soft, and its taste was overpowered by the tea.

I had totally forgotten about this place, until my phone mysteriously rang them one day.
Anyway, the noodles in spring onion sauce that was not previously on the menu was interesting so ordered one priced at $10 for takeout.
The bowl of noodles was rather small.
Before I opened the lid, it looked rather dark green from the opaque lid.
I thought to myself hmmm.
When I opened it, it was very green indeed! The noodles was covered with coarsely cut spring onions and coriander.
The noodles below were clumped together, but still soft.
It tasted like those alkaline noodles, but they were so soft, it tasted like egg noodles.
The sauce was abit too salty, but overall it tasted quite good.
