My first review of this place at the other branch in WC
http://www.openrice.com/restaurant/commentdetail.htm?commentid=2046098

Walked past and saw that there were seats to dine-in, so went in for some food.
It was so good, because the range is slightly bigger than the other branch, and they also have Palapok too, which means I do not need to go to Jolibee's in central.

As usual the Palabok is so yummy, soft glass vermicilli in rich sauce made from prawn and fish, topped with crunchy toppings.
There was a whole calamansi too, slit at the top which makes it easy to squeeze the juice out of it.

Drinks: Del Monte Four seasons juice which basically contains pineapple, mango, orange and guava, however it was a bit too sweet.
The coconut drink was basically just coconut water, but also too sweet.

I had been planning to have hotpot here since gourmet pictures of colourful cuttlefish balls were posted.
Apart from that, their website impressed me as it was in English, Chinese and there was a downloadable menu.

According to their website (www.meganskitchen.com), they claimed to have fitted induction cookers/餐桌內置電磁爐頭 however when we sat down for hotpot we had to use the gas canister powered one, which was a bit scary.

Before ordering, the table was laid with sauces and condiments ($20/person) which are charged regardless if you use them or not, same with the preserved eggs and ginger ($20/person).
Apart from the wide choice on the menu, we were allocated next to a noisy table, which made it hard to concentrate on the menu. The restaurant was 30% full throughout the evening, even when we left, so I couldn’t understand why they didn’t space out the people.

For the soup bases, there were so many that it was hard to choose.
Ideally I wanted the crab and tomato soup with the souffle finish, purely because the souffle finish was a must, but then I thought it would be weird matching some of the ingredients in tomato soup.

Other good choices were the congee base with abalone, escargots in sichuan chilli and English Oxtail broth.
So not only Gao Gei has congee hotpot.
As for the escargot, it seems really fun to have escargots in it too.
Although the prices may seem pricey for the soup base, all the ingredients in the soup are actually edible, not only the soup base is pricey, the condiments are also pricey.

In the end I chose the Hokkaido curry, the soup itself contained apples, carrots and other wholesome vegetables that could be eaten as well.
Not all hotpot restaurants have treasures in the soup.

For my hotpot I chose rainbow cuttlefish balls, salmon and spinach dumplings, truffle and beef dumplings, lettuce and tofu.
The cuttlefish balls were nice and colourful when they arrived, from purple, magenta, green to yellow.
The lettuce was cut nicely and placed neatly in the bowl like pot of growing vegetables.

The rainbow cuttlefish were made from 7 colourful items: purple sweet potato (purple), spring onion (green and white), spinach (dark green), beetroot (magenta), pumpkin (orange), yellow bell pepper (yellow), red bell pepper (slightly orange).

As for taste, the cuttlefish used in making these balls were fresh, and you can just taste its freshness.
The spinach one was rather memorable, so was the sweet potato, however after putting it in the hotpot for a while, the colour is no longer purple, but it was inside.
The texture of the sweet potato one was interesting, you can actually feel the stickyness of the sweet potato.

Next best was the spinach and salmon dumpling, each dumpling was freshly made with salmon and freshly chopped spinach.
It was so fresh that when you ate it, the spinach inside is still jade green with a crunch just like freshly blanched spinach, and the salmon had a nice fishy taste to it.
I really liked this dumpling because all the ingredients were freshly done, and not grounded into a paste.

As for the beef dumplings with truffle, it tasted weird, no truffle taste at all!

There were other dumplings which I should try on my next visit, mui choi and pork!!

The tofu and vegetables tasted how it should, so overall I really liked hotpot here, except for the gas hotpot and depending where you sit, and the people surrounding you.

[Review 853] BBQ wings @ 麥當勞 McDonald's

The chicken products at McDonalds are burgers, coated chicken wings, and nuggets.

This time, they have come out with BBQ grilled wings.

I was surprised it tasted much nicer than the honey grilled wings at KFC.

The honey-grilled wings at KFC have been grilled to the extent that the chicken is slightly tough and the skin is a bit like plastic film. The KFC version is also sweeter. Being fair the texture of the wings also depends on if they were just done or been sitting there for a while.

The wings here taste almost the same as KFC’s honey wing, but they are also spicy, same as the hot wings at McD’s.
The wings are separated into mid-joints and drumettes which is more convenient than the one piece wing at KFC (a whole wing from tip to mid-joint).

The wings at McD’s are much juicier and the skin is thin and tender that it rips easily during consumption.
The bones are disjointed easily too, making it easy to eat without meat being stuck on the joints.
There is a slight spiciness just like the hot wings, but not as spicy.
It would have been good if there was a wedge of lemon (but impossible for a fast food chain like McD’s) or even lemon flavouring on the chicken.
The product shot is relatively the same as the real thing, but the lemon I thought was a bit misleading, since people would associated the taste with it.

After trying the apple and cinnamon crumble last which failed to impress me, this time I tried the strawberry cream cake and also got one of those waffle sandwiches.
The cakes there are not really good, the strawberry one was just cream.
I was a bit skeptical with the waffles, they just looks like colourful cartoon food, especially the berry ones.
The waffle itself was not crunchy, but slightly soft, and the cream inside was hazelnut and chocolate, I was enlightened by the hazelnuts because they were quite big in size, rather than tiny nutty particles.
The chocolate cream, which I thought would be too creamy, turned out quite light, yet the texture was quite thick.

[Review 851] Better, but can be better still @ 必勝客 Pizza Hut

For their CHEF’s RECOMMENDATIONS (dinner sets), I wouldn’t say their food has improved but the choice of dinner sets has improved.

Previously they offered:
Smoked Salmon with Peach and Tomato Salad
Caesar Salad
French Style Escargots with Mashed Potato
Cream of Chicken Mushrooms Soup with Corn
Minestrone Soup with Cherry Tomatoes
Pan Fried Thin Beef Steak Spaghetti in Black Pepper Sauce
Aglio Olio with Prawn
Banana and Red Bean Pastry Roll
White Chocolate Strawberry Parfait
Tokyo Temptation Mini Pizza
Chicken Penne with Basil Sauce

The steak was tough and fatty as previously commented:
http://www.openrice.com/restaurant/commentdetail.htm?commentid=2096549

This time the mains seems better, but still not enticing enough to order the starters, so just picked two mains with two soups.
The choice of soup was much better this time being mushroom, and salmon soup.
The mushroom soup was really mushroomy not like the one made with button mushrooms, the salmon soup was a bit plain, not how I thought it would taste.

The mains ordered the prawn skewers and pasta, and the curry chicken.

The prawns skewers were just ok, the sauce that went with it, didn’t really match.
The chicken was slightly better, at least it wasn’t dry, and the coating has herbs on it.

Their website needs to be updated with the new Chef’s Reco as it is still showing the previous one!!

As usual, BK tastes how it should.

This time I got the French chicken sandwich which is a similar variation to the BK in UK.

It is a long shaped sandwich with wafer thin ham, grilled chicken, and sauce, however the bun is not a maize topped one.

The drink I got was the summer pink grapefruit, made from Grapefruit cordial behind the counter.
Overall the grapefruit drink was very refreshing, the other new drinks included chocolate mocha and mango.
All had the corresponding cordials at the bank which reminds me of flavour milk at school.

[Review 849] Is it going to stay for good @ 肥牛粉 Pho Delight Vietnamese Cuisine

Previously this used to be a Singaporean restaurant Pasar, then it closed down, next came Satay City which didnt stay for long and now PHO DELIGHT.

I can imagine it being busy for lunches, but after office hours, Wan Chai is not a likely place for dinner.
There is also another branch in Causeway Bay which would probably fare better being in a shopping and working location.

The menu basically offers noodles in soup, the usual rices, however the prices are a bit expensive for simple noodles.
I ordered ho-fun with prawns in sour soup, it was basically noodles in tangy sauce with a few prawns on top, and pieces of pineapple, tomato.
The soup was quite acidic, and the ho fun was a bit too soft, but overall it was ok, so lets see how long they will be here for.

The other spicy beef noodles were very spicy, it was so spicy, you could feel the heat of the chilli when you smell it,
Taking a tiny sip of the soup, was enough to make me go red!

I wanted to try the grilled beef, but the sour soup sounded more interesting, so if they are still here on my next visit, I shall give it a try.
