I knew there was an Awfully chocolate branch in Central but did not know where it was, but since I had already tried the butterscotch cake at the Causeway Bay branch I was not in a rush to try their other items.
However when I was walking on Stanley Street I noticed it and decided to eat there.
Although there are only two seats, the Central location is much more convenient to reach because there are no roads to cross and it is a street with lots of gourmet eateries.
After reading reviews about the super stacked chocolate cake I was really intrigued by the taste and texture because is it really similar to the chocolate roll sold at Quezon (and cheaper as well around $1x per slice).
Chocolate swiss roll at Quezon: http://www.openrice.com/restaurant/commentdetail.htm?commentid=2173821
The chocolate cake is sold by weight which ended up costing me HKD32, they offered to reheat it for me.
When it arrived they also provided me with some water which was really good and professional of them especially for eating sweet things.
The water was just what I needed because I just had some other sweet items beforehand so I did not want the aftertaste of that to interfere with the chocolate cake.
It was really tempting to order something else as well because there was water to refresh the palate and after eating sweet things it is nice to have some water.
Anyway the texture of the cake was soft especially because it was heated up, but the parts that did not get heated up where slightly firmer.
But the taste was strong of cocoa.
Compared to Quezon the texture and taste were nearly the same but the one here is slightly bitter and the one at Quezon is sweeter and super soft and does not need reheating.

[Review 1595] Triple sunny side up eggs brighten ur day @ 孖沙茶餐廳 Ma Sa Restaurant (上環)

I came here especially for the triple fried eggs with Chinese barbecue pork with rice.
I can never get enough of runny egg yolks especially with plain boiled rice that is perfectly cooked and soy sauce that is not too sweet or too salty.
Anyway I ordered that and did not know you could have the eggs cooked in other ways because they asked how I wanted my eggs so I just said I wanted the yolk to be runny.
When it came it was three eggs co-joined together with three BIG runny yolks!!
The gourmet barbecue pork was beneath the eggs and there was generous dark soy sauce all over the eggs and rice.
Usually I do not like barbecue pork unless it is lean and soft but from the previous photos on Openrice the barbecue pork looked great.
The pork was sliced thinly as well and there was a fair amount of pork to go with the rice after discarding some fatty bits. It was soft and tender.
The eggs were done nicely and the yolks were big and runny and because there was three egg yolks I did not have to eat the yolk sparingly with the rice.
As well as that it was impressive the eggs did not have an oil smell or have an oil taste. Eggs are really delicate ingredients that absorb any foul flavouring or odours easily.
I felt that this dish was a perfect ratio of rice to pork and eggs and soy sauce, there was not one mouthful that was boring.
All in all, each of those four elements was perfect which made it extremely delicious.
It was like the excitement of having English Breakfast, dipping sausages and other elements into the egg yolk.
Every mouthful was delicious, it was either lovely rice with runny egg yolk, rice with soy sauce, rice with barbecue pork and egg yolk.
There was sufficient amounts of roast pork, rice, and egg to finish most of the dish but in the end I finished with only two spoons of rice left and I wished there was some more soy sauce to finish it off.
The soy sauce they had was extremely nice. There are several places I have been where the soy sauce made the food fantastic.
But the soy sauces are unique in different ways.
The soy sauce here is dark and thick and it is slightly sweet.
Also tried the curry but found it too spicy.
The prices here seem quite reasonable which are less than $30 per dish.
They also have a daily set special which is barely legible unless you are a local Chinese who can probably make out what it saids.

[Review 1594] Second round of desserts @ 金源小館 Your Restaurant

G/F, Tai Wong Building, 3 Tai Wong Street East, Wan Chai
https://www.openrice.com/zh/hongkong/review/second-round-of-desserts-your-restaurant-e2239664
After trying four delicious desserts last time, this time I was back for more.
I got Durian mousse, Chocolate mousse, Milk tea sawdust pudding.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Chocolate mousse
The chocolate mousse was dusted with chocolate curls.
Overall I found it too cloyingly sweet otherwise it would have tasted nice.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Durian mousse
I wasn’t sure if this was going to taste nice because sometimes when Durian is made into a dessert it tastes fake and too creamy when they add cream into it.
The texture of this mousse was extremely light with fine mousse bubbles in it.
The durian taste was strong and it was not too creamy and there was pieces of durian in the mousse as well.
The pieces of durian that they put in the mousse were not that ripe but matched the mousse because the pieces of durian were sweet and had a slight crisp fibrous texture to it so you taste and feel the real pieces of durian in it as well.
Overall the mousse tasted like eating a real aerated durian that was blended into a mousse.
Towards the end it started to taste too sweet.
The only unpleasant experience was burping durian odour the whole day.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Milk tea sawdust pudding
I do not like Chinese milk tea but as a dessert there is less bitterness taste to it and they probably do not use condensed milk.
The sawdust pudding tasted like milk tea mousse with fine biscuit crumbs on top.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
It was also impressive that they supplied a plastic spoon that was not the Chinese type because I find those Chinese spoons not ergonomic.
Other desserts I have tried at YOUR RESTAURANT Whisky ice-cream, Blueberry cheesecake, Tiramisu, Caramel egg pudding.

https://www.openrice.com/zh/hongkong/review/caramel-cheesecake-pacific-coffee-company-e2239607
I can’t remember when I last visited Pacific Coffee because their food selection is so boring and repetitive.
They seem to have new items every three-four months so you are not missing out much if you do not go regularly.
This time they had the new Caramel cheesecake for HKD27, which had a reasonably thick caramel flavoured cheese base.
The taste was really nice and similar to butterscotch however the texture was too dense and thick that most of the cheese gets stuck to the fork.
The caramel cheesecake was composed of a soft dense biscuit base, a thick layer of caramel cheese, a layer of cheesecake and thick brittle dehydrated caramel cream on top.

[Review 1592] Scallop porcini ravioli at Hang Hau Village @ La Piazza

https://www.openrice.com/zh/hongkong/review/scallop-porcini-ravioli-at-hang-hau-village-e2239606
After my favourite La Piazzetta closed down in Wan Chai I ventured to the outskirts of TKO to La Piazza for their Ravioli.
La Piazza is renowned for economical pastas as well as fine pastas.
It used to be a good location especially when ATV's Clear water bay studio used to be located there but the crew and actors usually go for Chinese food and there is a really good canteen there (which should be listed on openrice) that does delicious chicken steak with garlic and spring onions and crispy pork patty with salted fish.
It was mild that day so I sat outside. I was surprised there was not many mosquitoes about which was good.
++++++++++++
Scallop and porcini mushroom ravioli
Ordered this first and it was served so fast.
I was expecting it to take longer and it didn't even take five minutes but it turns out they were not hot enough.
The sauce was creamy but it wasn't too heavy.
Inside the ravioli were whole pieces of scallops and pieces of porcini mushroom.
If there was truffle oil or fresh truffle used in the sauce it would have been perfect.
However the scallops in the ravioli were rather chewy and I could not distinguish whether the scallops were raw or overdone, but from the pictures it seems raw because if they were cooked it should be white and not so translucent.
Overall the pasta tasted nice and the porcini mushrooms were nice and strong.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Squid ink pasta with asparagus and prawn
I mentioned that the ravioli was not hot enough so the chef ensured the squid ink pasta was piping hot.
The pasta was stir-fried with garlic and some fine celery stalks in it. The pasta was extremely al-dente and slightly too oily with some odour from the pan but since I went late the pan had probably cooked many more pastas before so it accumulated some odours from the other dishes.
The asparagus was big and it was surprising that they were not woody.
The only thing that let it down was some sand in the pasta and I wasnt sure if it came from the prawns or the asparagus.
On the menu this pasta is called shrimp and asparagus tonnarelin but when I googled tonnarelin I was referred to Tonnarelli.
Tonnarelli is a thicker, more squared, version of spaghetti. I think the pasta was made in house because it had a different texture to the normal pasta and it was not so mushy.

Food was great on my first visit so decided to go again.
Went two times after my first visit, one was takeaway and the other was dine in.
For takeaway it takes ages so I dined there the third time because it was quicker.
Ordered my favourite chicken thukpa noodles, chicken mo mo and chicken tandoori leg set
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
chicken thukpa
The noodles were different from my first visit and there was less mustard greens in the soup so it was not so bitter.
I am not sure which noodles are more authentic but I preferred the noodles and soup on my first visit.
The noodles this time was foamy and had an alkaline taste.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
chicken mo mo
On my first visit I tried the pork mo mo but this time I tried the chicken mo mo.
I preferred the chicken because all the Chinese dumplings are made with pork.
There was lots of purple onions inside and their chili sauce made it delicious.
I do not know what is in that chili sauce but it tastes like the chili sauce in UK's Perfect fried Chicken shop owned by Asians there.
I tried to draw a star in the middle of the plate using the sauce but as it was too watery it failed and I only managed to get a blob with a slight star resemblance.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
chicken tandoori leg set
The set comes with soup, rice, spiced courgettes and a side of Shanghai greens.
The chicken was tender and full of spices, it tasted as good as the one at Pakora
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Lentil soup
The soup is always good there and full of spices.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Next time I will just order the chicken mo mo and the tandoori leg set again.

The food on my first visit was great so decided to come again.
There was more variety since my first visit and the staff were as good as before, they actually had knowledge on the food that was served and were able to answer about the food not like other restaurants especially Cantonese ones where they regurgitate the name of the dish back when you ask!
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Lamprais 斯里蘭卡蕉葉飯
A Dutch influenced special occasion dish of flavored rice. Served with fish cutlet, eggplant, seeni sambol, egg & your choice of meat, wrapped in a banana leaf.
As I do not know much on the Sri Lankan dishes, the rice was great because it had various things in it so you could sample everything such as the Fish cutlet, Eggplant Moju.
The rice was really soft and moist with coconut, and there was cashew nuts too which had a wonderful beany texture and not the crunchy texture. Actually the cashews were soft and creamy and I loved it.
There was also curried potatoes as well and eggplant moju, but I felt the eggplant tasted better as a sidedish because it was sour.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Gotu Kola Mallum
Menu description: A unique style dish mixed with Gotu Kola, Bell Pepper, Red Onion, Lime, fresh grated coconut and light traditional spices.
This was the dish I wanted to try most because of the Gotu Kola Mallum which is some Sri Lankan leafy green said to have some medicinal properties.
I wanted to try it because it was mixed with lime juice and red onions.
This dish did not let me down!!
The gotu kola was finely chopped and there was no grassy taste. The coconut was dessicated but not dry.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Eggplant Moju 芥茉醋煮矮瓜
Menu description: Fried eggplant, onions and green chilies mixed in authentic mustard vinaigrette.
I loved this dish as well, the taste was really strong especially the vinaigrette dressing.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Fish cutlet
The shape of this was interesting like a ball but it was delicious and the chef could not have selected a better fish for this.
The fish inside was silky and boneless unlike other Chinese places where they grind fish bones in with the patty.
The fish was not grounded but mashed up so the texture and fibres were still present.
The fish that they used was mackerel.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Fish Roti
Tried this before but decided to order it again. It comes with mint sauce but the fish roti itself tastes brilliant with or without sauce.
However this time the colour was not as purple as before but the taste was still as good.
The spices were strong and there was plenty of onions, ginger and spring onions.
Again it is made with mackerel so it tastes really nice and strong spices dose not overthrow the taste of the mackerel.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Mint Sauce
The mint sauce here is different from the Indian ones which are sweet. I liked this one because it tastes savoury and there is so much desiccated fresh coconut in it that you can just eat the mint sauce on its own.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Poppaddoms and chutney
They tasted as nice as the first time I tried them there, and also they are different to the Indian poppaddoms because they are thinner and starchy and tastes like crisps. There was no foul oil taste or smell in the poppadoms.
The chutney that came with it was also nice, it was made with pineapples and tomatoes.
