Walked past and saw the flaky pastry cakes which had dried oyster so I decided to get it.
Initially I did not know they were the same style as "Wife cakes" made with wintermelon.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Flaky pastry with BBQ Pork and dried oyster HKd6.6:
The pastry was extremely flaky when I bit into it however it did not taste as nice as I expected because there was quite a lot of wintermelon in it and fatty bits.
It was really sweet as well and I could not taste any BBQ pork or dried oysters.
If it was a real puff pastry with BBQ pork and dried oysters it would taste really nice.

[Review 1909] Chok Chok Shiok from Central to Hysan Place @ Shiok!
24/10/2012
Shiok!
銅鑼灣軒尼詩道500號希慎廣場11樓Kitchen 11
Kitchen 11, 11/F,Hysan Place, 500 Hennessy Road, Causeway Bay
https://www.openrice.com/zh/hongkong/review/chok-chok-shiok-from-central-to-hysan-place-e2265510
Previously this restaurant used to be located in Central, but it was really high up so I could not be bothered to walk up there.
Then it closed down and now they are back at Hysan Place, however the menu is simpler and the branding has changed to a more comic appearance.
The items at Central were not served here so I was slightly disappointed which were:
Kaya Toast, Sago Gula Melaka, Pandan 7-Up drink and the pandan scrambled egg toast.
In the end I just ordered the panna cotta.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Pandan leaf and lemon grass panna cotta HKD28:
To be honest I don't like lemon grass but tried it anyway, luckily the lemon grass had a light taste, the pandan taste was slightly stronger and on top of the panna cotta there was white sugar, dessciated coconut and almond slices which gave it more depth.
The panna cotta was really creamy and thick.

I was thirsty so I got the wild hot kudzu drink, not because of its health benefits but because it was natrual.
I got the cup version which costs $9.5, it was served in a paper cup with a lid and a straw.
Luckily it was not boiling hot or I would not have been able to hold the cup.
I just felt that it tasted like boiled watercress and it was slightly sweet so I asked why it was sweet and they said they put dried dates in it.
On the counter I also saw bowls of sugar with skewer sticks next to it.
I wonder what they are for.
Apart from Kudzu they also serve Grosvenor Momordica.
This place seems popular with the media but I just tried it because it was a place in Wan Chai that I have not tried.

Walked past and saw that they had peppered beef steak on the menu so decided to get it.
I have never ventured into this shop because there is always too many people on this road and this restaurant is always packed with people.
While I was waiting, I took photos of the handwritten menus which had nice drawings and layouts especially the fish.
From the entrance you can also see the kitchen and the chef cooking.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Peppered steak HKD35:
It was really nice of them to have separated the rice in a separate container and the beef in another box.
The beef was lovely and tender and the pepper sauce was really nice and there was a hint of sweetness because of the onions.
The only negative comment was that it was too salty.

[Review 1906] Take a trip to Shek kip mei if you're bored @ 麥記士多

Ever since seeing photos of the dark coloured squid in the metal pan I have always wanted to try them, but as there were not many reviews I was not sure if this place still existed.
Anyway if you have an hour to kill or you're just plain bored, you should give this place a visit if you're not a Shek Kip Mei resident.
I found this place really fascinating, it was like an old area of Hong Kong and similar to those housing estates in East London.
This particular estate had an extremely long corridor that ends at the other end of that building!
Getting here was easier than I thought, exit B2 of Shek Kip Mei MTR and turn left into the estate and keep walking around the estate until you reach a road.
The snack joint is just across the road!
When you enter that estate the snack shop is on the right hand side along with other stalls.
This place is only open at night!
Other interesting scenes.
Anyway finally reached the stall and there it was.
According to the reviews they used to cost 50 cents per slice, but now they cost $1 each, so I got $10 worth.
The pieces of squid are put in a brown paper bag that is ripped open to form a cone shape, and another is put beneath it to give it extra protection.
After that, more sauces are added and if you like it spicy you can add the chili sauce too.
I asked for less sauce because I was quite worried the bag might break due to it getting wet from the sauce.
I finally tried the squid and it was really worth coming all the way as well as the fun of seeing this interesting housing estate.
There was so much sauce on the squid and the sesame oil taste was really evident.
The sauces were lovely and strong similar to satay sauce but not spicy.
For beginners like me, it takes a while to get used to using these skewers to pick up these extremely slippery pieces of squid. The fact that the squid is cut into really small long slices requires some extra skill to pick them up.
Since they were cut so finely the squid was lovely and tender and more sauce can adhere to it making it more tasty.
On my way out I had finished the delicious squid so I had to throw the bag away, I managed to find a litter bin and it was personalised with the estate name too!
There was also a dog which had interesting bat like ears.
There is a video of the owner performing magic outside his shop on youtube.

[Review 1905] Its a price guessing game with rude people @ 真美味

Decided to try a skewer of octopus as I have never tried the snacks in MK before because I always get food poisoning.
Before I ordered I looked around to see how much it would cost but there was no pricing.
Anyway I ordered a skewer thinking it would not cost more than $10 but I was wrong!
I gave a $20 note and only got $8 change!
What’s worse was their attitude, it was like take it or leave it!
As for the octopus it was reheated in boiling hot water so it was extremely chewy and tasted bland.

[Review 1904] Literally ketchup plonked on pasta! @ 華樂冰室

Came here because I saw photos of tomato ketchup on pasta!
Usually Chinese cafes will make their own tomato sauce but I was intrigued by this one as they literally put tomato ketchup on pasta.
It was quite interesting because this cafe was quite old and inside the restaurant there were quite a few interesting items such as the shed.
After it was opened, I realised they stored ice in there.
The tilings on the wall take you back in time.
Anyway I came here especially for the spaghetti which was part of the lunch sets.
The lunch sets basically all had spaghetti with fried egg and bread/toast with a drink.
For the spaghetti there was a choice of tomato sauce or pepper sauce.
Then for the set you get to choose ham, chicken wings or pork chop.
Anyway ordered two spaghetti sets with tomato sauce and pepper sauce and the chickens wings and pork chop.

Bread with fried egg:
An old plate from the 197Xs.
The egg was lovely and delicately fried, there were some slight crispy bits which were nice and the yolk was runny.
The egg was impressive because there was no oil taste on the egg white, hence I ate the egg white leaving the delicious yolk on the bread.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
spaghetti with tomato sauce:
Although the spaghetti had a really dark colour there was no taste to it so it really relied on the sauce.
The tomato sauce was basically tomato ketchup and the brand they used was Del Monte.
I prefer Heinz ketchup because it is slightly sour and Del Monte's is basically sweet.
Anyway the spaghetti and tomato sauce were quite nice as a combination, however Heinz already have a canned version of spaghetti in tomato sauce and the canned version is softer and more sour.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
spaghetti with pepper sauce:
The pepper sauce they serve here was quite good, it was not too peppery and complimented the pasta quite well.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
chickens wings:
Another old plate from the 197Xs.
I was surprised the chicken wings were quite nice, there was no oil taste and the chickens tasted fresh, even the chicken meat was soft and supple.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
pork chop:
Slightly too greasy
