五洲麵 Top Noodle
西貢德隆前街18號地下
G/F, 18 Tak Lung Front Street, Sai Kung

Went to Sai Kung for food and I was really glad I did not go to the modern part of Sai Kung because I found two delicious places including this one, the other one was Revolution which I wished I discovered earlier.
Entering the old part of Sai Kung into the lanes, I noticed a banner with a racing car and grand prix design, when I had a closer look at it, I realised it was a noodle shop!!
I am not a fan of Chinese noodles but the design attracted me so there was no harm taking a look at the shop on the way to finding a place to eat!
When I got there, the shop was quite small but had a flashy grand prix style front.
Then I looked at the menu and saw BRAISED DUCK!!!! Usually it is roast duck or smoked duck slices and for a small joint like this serving braised duck it sounded delicious so I went in for that.
On the way in I saw a metal pan with braised duck in it which I was pretty sure it was going to be that dish.
It did not look appealing but it was just pieces of bones but somehow I knew it was going to be delicious.
Anyway sat down and they had these interesting stool like sofa which feel quite wobbly.
(Pity I forgot to take a picture because they did look quite nice and it was in my favourite silver colour)
Here is a photo but you cant see the bottom half!
On the wall there was a bag full of ring pulls which I thought was cute!
The menus were quite flashy in contrast to the rest of the restaurant.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Braised duck:
When it came, it was exactly what I saw in the metal pan and there were some extra courgettes as well.
The chinese mushrooms were the cutest I have seen and I suspect that they chose the smaller variety so that it is more tasty and it proved to be right.
The mushrooms were deliberately not soaked properly to give it an extra stalky texture and flavour.
The sauce was spicy because there were chilis but it was soothing like mint and you could still taste other tastes.
There were so many spices in this including aniseed and sichuan peppercorns.
The duck was chopped into fine pieces which was difficult to eat but if you do not chop it into really small pieces it is hard for the duck to get flavoured properly.
Any how, even though I was not an expert with bony pieces I found the sauce delicious with the rice.
I can't wait to eat this again, but since I am not an expert with bones, I hope I get more mushrooms next time.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Hong Kong style tea:
I do not drink the HK beverages but it came with the meal. I only took a picture of it because the milk/cream/condensed milk or whatever was so thick you can see it sinking to the bottom on the side of the glass.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Soup:
The set comes with soup which is not listed on the menu but they will ask you if you want the soup or not because some people do not drink the soup.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
After dining here I could not figure why they used the grand prix design then later I realised they were trying to link it with Car noodles hence the car.
I tried the noodles as well, but I preferred the duck!

[Review 1981] Hello Kitty x Yoppi froyo joint @ East pointy city @ Yoppi
07/11/2012
Yoppi
將軍澳重華路8號東港城1樓K1號舖
Shop K1, 1/F, East Point City Shopping Arcade, 8 Chung Wa Road, Tseung Kwan O
https://www.openrice.com/zh/hongkong/review/hello-kitty-x-yoppi-froyo-joint-east-pointy-city-e2268178
When their first branch opened in MK I really wanted to go but it was really hard trying to get a froyo from there because there were so many people and it was so noisy making it hard to order.
Then they opened their next store in Central which was really accessible but when you get to Central there is so much choice that I end up going elsewhere.
I wonder how long this shop will stay open because Yogo Frozen Yogurt which was nearby has closed down.
The difference at this branch is that it is decorated with Hello Kitty and the spoons are Hello Kitty too!
The spoon comes in pink or blue.
I usually collect the spoons if they are nice.
The froyo cup also had Hello Kitty on it.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Green tea:
Quite nice but it was quite icy.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Raspberry tart:
This was my favourite the raspberry flavouring was quite natural.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Vanilla:
As well as the raspberry the vanilla tasted quite nice too, the vanilla taste was quite strong.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Signature tart:
I was quite disappointed with this one because it wasnt tarty enough.

[Review 1980] A ramen champion for everyone or Ramen ChampionS @ 超男 Bario

超男 Bario
佐敦彌敦道222號恒豐中心地庫Ramen Champion 3號舖
Shop 4, Basement, Ramen Champion, Prudential Centre, 222 Nathan Road, Jordan
https://www.openrice.com/zh/hongkong/review/a-ramen-champion-for-everyone-or-ramen-champions-e2268153
Came here because the noodles looked different, they were thicker and flatter looking like tagliatelle.
Before I came I did not know that it would be similar to a food court with six ramen joints.
When you go in, you are given a plastic card, which you give to the joint when you order your ramen.
When you leave you pass this card to the cashier to pay as if it were a bill.
After ordering the ramen at the joint they give you an electronic device which alerts you when your ramen is ready.
Although I had already made up my mind to eat at Bario, I still looked around, but it just so happens Bario was the one with staff that could speak normal English too.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Tonkotsu ramen:
The first thing I could smell was black pepper because there was cracked black pepper on top of the beanshoots.
The beanshoots looked like a mountain so I transferred them to an empty bowl and was surprised there was a bowl full of beanshoots in the ramen!!
After taking away the beanshoots you can see the ramen beneath which is slightly different to the usual ones.
As for the broth, there was quite a lot of pork oil and collagen which is "Normal" in Japan.
I wonder how the people will react to it here.
+++
When food is authentic but not to their style or taste standards then they will complain, when you finally get something that is authentic people complain as well as it is not localised or adapted to their tastes!!
+++
For me the ramen tasted interesting because the shape of it was different.
When I collected the ramen, the pork lard was quite strong and I could smell it.
I found the pork quite salty.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Cha Shu don:
The pork here was similar to the one in the noodles, but they were quite dry and tough.
There was too much sauce which made the rice too sweet and soggy.

[Review 1979] Lemon and onion pork chops @ 幸福城茶餐廳
07/11/2012
幸福城茶餐廳
黃大仙彩虹道121號啟德花園2期地下5號舖
Shop No. 5, Kai Tak Garden II, 121 Choi Hung Road, Wong Tai Sin
https://www.openrice.com/zh/hongkong/review/lemon-and-onion-pork-chops-e2268139
This place looked old and interesting so ventured in.
Ordered the spare ribs in lemon sauce which sounds weird.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
spare ribs in lemon sauce:
I wondered if I had misread the menu or I interpreted it wrongly as the spare ribs looked like pork chops.
The rice was beneath the pork chops.
The sauce tasted quite strange because it was lemoney and had onions in it as well, but it tasted like artificial lemon.
The lemon tea was quite bitter and the soup just tasted how it should.

[Review 1978] Cheap noodles and a quick fix for $18 @ 沾仔記麵食 Jim Chai Kee Noodle
07/11/2012
沾仔記麵食 Jim Chai Kee Noodle
紅磡寶其利街41號地下
G/F, 41 Bulkeley Street, Hung Hom
https://www.openrice.com/zh/hongkong/review/cheap-noodles-and-a-quick-fix-for-18-e2268129
This place is cheap for noodles, if you only choose one item to go with the noodles it only costs $18.
So at that price you cant really complain about its taste.
But anyway, squid balls and vermicelli are cheap items in general.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Squid balls with vermicelli:
The vermicelli was quite hard and coarse but the broth was quite nice, it was quite light yet slightly spiked with MSG.
The squid balls were springy with the occasional pieces of chopped up squid in it.

[Review 1977] Neat grilled items @ Emmanuel Deli
07/11/2012
以馬內利美食 Emmanuel Deli
佐敦德成街1號B地舖
Shop B, 1 Tak Shing Street, Jordan
https://www.openrice.com/zh/hongkong/review/neat-grilled-items-emmanuel-deli-e2268126
On my way to Harukan I noticed this joint serving grilled snacks, the décor and fixtures were quite modern and not Chinesey.
Initially I thought they served baguettes because it had “deli” in the name or Mediterranean food because it was black and reminded me of Ebeneezers.
I think they chose the name Emmanuel because of their religion as they had videos promoting it too.
Their attitude was worth commending, they were quite patient taking your orders and didn’t mind explaining their food.
On a closer look I realised they did skewers and the skewers were neatly and hygienically stored in the glass cabinet, as well as labelled boxes in the fridge/freezer.
There is a table where you can eat the skewers and there are sauces, which were also hygienically, stored a well.
They had chili oil, satay sauce and thai sweet chili sauce.
If you order their herbal teas they are self-service from that table too.
The drinks are a must have item in the Chinese community because they believe that after eating grilled foods they should drink herbal tea.
They also had these rolls which are similar to the Mexican rolls, if I lived nearby I would order one, but it would be quite difficult eating it there standing up.
I wanted to get the fried chicken balls but it was sold out. In the end I got the grilled fish because not many places have it and the grilled tofu.
To order you just tick what you want from the order form.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Grilled octopus rolls:
The grilled octopus roll is basically one of those items, which doesn’t matter if you try it or not because they are just the same ones at the snack joints in Circle K, except that it has been flattened and grilled.
The thing that killed it was the syrup sauce, which just made it sweet.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Grilled fish:
Basically it was frozen fish, it was still nice and moist after being grilled, however it was too salty.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Grilled tofu:
The grilled tofu looked really nice, it had rosemary herbs sprinkled on it.
Again the syrup killed it, it just tasted sweet. However you could taste some slight fish meat in it because it was not 100% tofu and the tofu pieces were quite elastic like fish balls.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
For improvements they should have the syrup separate so you can decide whether to add it or it.
There was a choice of having it grilled with salt or teryiaki sauce but I never thought they would put syrup at the end.
