[Review 2126] Hainan style chicken at Jordan's Pak Don @ 栢檔去骨海南雞飯 Pak Don

To be honest I came in here because there were not many people dining in here!
Sometimes this is how I choose my restaurants because when there are fewer people, the restaurant will be more patient at taking orders and the quality is slightly better because it is not rushed.
Ordered the rice with chicken medium which does not come with soup.
If you order the large set it comes with golden pumpkin soup for $4X.
As I have not tried this place before I ordered the medium size because I actually wanted to eat at Hoi Kee's next door but needed something as a filler first.
Although I did not order the soup, I caught a glimpse of the golden orange soup which reminded me of Hainan chicken place at Sai King located in the narrow lane.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Hainan style chicken:
The rice was a little too soft but it was greased by chicken oil which made it easy to eat and swallow.
The chicken was quite nice because I was given decent white meat, there was only two pieces which was the bony end of the chicken wingette which I could not eat and can be seen placed on the side of the plate along with chicken skin.
The sauces given were sweet dark soy sauce, chili sauce and ginger puree (green).
My favourite was the ginger puree which was not even salty.
The chili sauce was too watery and sweet for my liking and the soy sauce was the sweet syrupy type.

Thanks to Ivy for these cute mini walnut cupcakes which I had for breakfast!
Indeed a perfect morning with a Bonjour greeting!
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Mini walnut cupcakes:
I think there were about eight mini cakes inside and when I opened the bag there was lovely butter smell.
The sweetness was just right and there were crispy pieces of walnut in it and the cakes were very buttery.
The taste reminds me of the Chinese style sliced cakes at the bakery but these were in cake shaped form.

[Review 2124] Fish and chips at the Lan Kwai Fong Carnival 2012 @ Harrington's

I was quite looking forward to Harringtons food stall this year because they had the sausage rolls at the LFK Beer festival which I did not try that time because I had already just had lunch at Harringtons!!!
This time they had a stall again at the LFK carnival and on the first day they had fish and chips and meat pies.
On the second day they had casserole I think.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Fish and chips:
The fish displayed in the cabinet was fish in batter but the one served was smaller pieces of fish in breadcrumbs.
Anyway it was good I could sample their fish and chips without needing to order the full portion at Harringtons because there are some irresistibly good set lunches.
It was good there was Heinz ketchup and salt but there was no vinegar.
The chips were not that crispy because they had been fried for some time.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Meat pies:
The meat pie was quite nice because it had lean minced beef in rich gravy inside.

[Review 2123] Une nouveau marche de pasta dans Po Lam @ Pasta Marche - Italian Casual Restaurant
05/12/2012
Pasta Marche - Italian Casual Restaurant
將軍澳貿業路8號新都城中心2期1樓1072 - 1074號舖
Shop 1072-1074, 1/F, MCP Central, 8 Mau Yip Road, Tseung Kwan O
https://www.openrice.com/zh/hongkong/review/une-nouveau-marche-de-pasta-dans-po-lam-e2273187
Before this place was opened, it was boarded up with the Pasta Marche name. Anyway thought it was French because of MARCHE but when it opened it was another Italian inspired Japanese restaurant.
Since I had dinner already I went in for desserts, which was not displayed, on the menu outside and it was lucky that I asked.
It was their soft opening so only half the restaurant was occupied by diners.
I had to wait for three tables before I was seated.
While I was browsing the menu, the pasta and carpaccios were priced quite reasonably, just costing slightly more than Watami casual japanese restaurant.
After I was seated, I was given some bread, however there was no side dish for the olive oil so I had to balance a spoon on the basket and put the olive oil there.
There was olive oil and chili oil in the frosted containers.
Anyway I ordered the chiffon cakes (thinking was it really chiffon or a translation blip) but it turned out they really were chiffon cakes.
They also had watermelon or kiwi terrine, which sounds interesting!
I also wanted to order the veggie leaves tea but they were not available yet.
Overall I felt that the menu was not that consistent because the Chinese and English had some differences because one language would be more detailed.
Eg the in English the cake was chiffon but in Chinese there was no chiffon.
The veggie leaves tea was fruit and vegetable in Chinese.
Both cakes came with a dollop of whipped cream and I had the carrot cake first because I assumed the chocolate would have a stronger taste.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Carrot Chiffon cake
The carrot chiffon cake was surrounded by berries and you could see the chiffon cake patterns. It was quite nice having a carrot cake chiffon style because carrot cake is dense and heavy.
However the carrot taste was really faint. The cake seemed boring but with the tart blueberries and cream the cake came alive.
There were also caramelized nuts too which gave it some crunch and the berries and cream with the cake reminded me of a berry flavoured Victoria sandwich.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Chocolate ginger chiffon cake
I thought the chocolate cake would have a strong chocolate taste but it was faint, and the ginger too, but you could find ginger fibres in it.
Again the cake came alive with the cream, crispy nuts, pieces of chocolates and chocolate sauce.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
I was really impressed with the cakes as they were not too sweet or heavy.
The décor of this restaurant was quite relaxing and natural with high ceilings, and I liked the front where they had vegetables and fruit on display just like a real Market (Marche) in Europe.
I will definitely be back to try their pastas.

[Review 2122] Sweet desserts now available @ Hoi Kee in Jordan 海記合桃甜品 Hoi Kee Walnut Place

https://www.openrice.com/zh/hongkong/review/sweet-desserts-now-available-hoi-kee-in-jordan-e2272855
I was really happy to see a new branch of Hoi Kee in Jordan.
Chungs dessert and Chung kee used to be my favourite but now Hoi Kee's is my favourite!
There are other branches in Mong Kok and To Kwa Wan, but TKW is too far and the one at Mk is not that good.
While I was outside looking at the banner, this weirdo shouted at the menu and said it was not nice, but I still went in anyway.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
White dessert:
This is my favourite dessert at Hoi Kee but they used to only available at certain times of the day but now it is available all day but the price is slightly higher.
It has my favourite sago, mini rice dumplings, aloe vera and cream.
The sweetness was just right with strong vanilla flavouring.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Crushed cherry ice:
I was disappointed with this because the crushed cherry ice was solid and frozen.
The taste of cherry was not cloyingly sweet was it was syrupy, however the taste was not artificial which was good.
It came with strawberry icecream on top and canned peaches.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Pistachio flavoured snowflake ice:
This is my second time having this dessert and it still tastes great because the pistachio flavouring is natrual.
However I did not like the orange coloured gelatin balls. They tasted really artificial.

[Review 2121] Fish and chips under the lovely brit weather @ Chip In Fish & Chips

Chip In Fish & Chips
西貢敬民街9號高勝樓地下11號舖
Shop 11, G/F, Ko Shing House, 9 King Man Street, Sai Kung
https://www.openrice.com/zh/hongkong/review/fish-and-chips-under-the-lovely-brit-weather-e2272477
Finally there is a cheap chippie in Hong Kong!
When I got there it just looked like a chippie in the UK, the typical blue and white decoration and even their logo was so chippie style!
It is the same as those Chinese owned chippies in the UK.
They even had pictures of my favourite marmite spread!
If this chip shop was located in one of those shops facing the sea at Kennedy town then it would be even more perfect!
Anyway the location is good enough in Sai Kung and close to the mini bus station.
Camden Town has some serious competition, I am sure expats will know which one to pick.
The best thing was, they had the short chippie forks!
On miserable rainy days just like UK, you get a $2 discount!
Just like the chippies do in UK, the chips are served on paper, but the paper here is folded into a boat and placed on their red post box shaped bowls if you dine in, however there are only two seats.
I practically wanted every item on the menu, but I wished they had deep fried apple, saveloy, black pudding and more.
They have butty on the menu which is comforting to see!
Anyway they also had curry sauce which was great, a standard item in a chippie!
Now that I have found my chippie I am still looking for a real kebab shop!
I ordered a small portion of chips, curry sauce and sausage sandwich to take away.
The curry sauce was in a separate cup and the chips were separate which was good.
When I was carrying the bag, I could already smell the vinegar and the chips.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
chips:
The lovely chips had salt and vinegar sprinkled on and were wrapped up in paper.
I loved the way the chips had absorbed the vinegar and salt during the journey.
The chips were really good, they were soft with the greased smooth texture.
Don't bother coming if you are expecting crispy chips because English chips are not meant to be that crunchy, go to Camden Town.
So hopefully the chips remain like this and don't become Hongkonised!
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
curry sauce and chips:
On my first taste of the curry taste it was really bland, but dipping the chips in the curry sauce, the curry flavour seemed to come out.
The chips were lovely and wholesome and were very potatoey because they were lovely and soft!
The chips with or without curry sauce was really delicious and I was so carried away eating them I forgot to take a picture of the cross section of the chips!
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
sausage sandwich:
The sausage sandwich was delicious, although it was not the typical pub sausage it still tasted nice, and the cheese was nice.
I was glad it was not a frankfurter pretending to be a sausage!
I even had some curry sauce left and had it with the sandwich.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
After having all that I was satisfied but still hungry!!!
If I had dined in I would have ordered a cup of tea as well!
Anyway I will be back for more!
I can foresee their opening hours extending to 8.30pm.

[Review 2120] Anatomy of a Chinese fruit tart @ 美心西餅 Maxim's Cake Shop
30/11/2012
美心西餅 Maxim's Cake Shop

Shop TST 1, Tsim Sha Tsiu MTR Station, Tsim Sha Tsui
https://www.openrice.com/zh/hongkong/review/anatomy-of-a-chinese-fruit-tart-maxims-e2272472
The fruit tart was monstrous and hard to get from the box when it was amongst other cakes unless you have big hands and long fingers, otherwise your hand is going to get sticky.
It looked difficult to eat so I didn’t bother eating it the normal way.
Instead I used a spoon and ate the fruit first which were: blueberries, mango, strawberries and kiwi.
Luckily the kiwi was sweet and the mango was not too sweet because I do not like mango.
Beneath the fruit I found a tiny square block of cake which was used as a pillar for the fruit placement and the cream was used to adhere the fruit to it.
The sweet soft sponge was fixed to the base of the tart by melted chocolate.
The tart base was quite shallow but the base was really thick and sweet.
I felt that the tart base was the sweetest item out of the fruit, cake and cream.
I still prefer the normal Western tarts with custard at the bottom, which are not so monstrous and not so messy to eat!
It seems the Chinese fruit tart version has cake in it as well and they like to pile up the fruit to make it look grand to make up for the custard.
