現代煮意 Food Expression DINER
灣仔晏頓街2號地下
G/F, 2 Anton Street, Wan Chai
https://www.openrice.com/zh/hongkong/review/wicked-food-from-central-2-wanchai-in-a-cute-diner-e2274062
Found out about this new restaurant from OpenRice. The name immediately sprung to my mind because there is also a branch in Central, however it is located in the MTR station.
When I got there, I realised it used to be this sandwich joint.
The good thing about this joint compared to central is that you can dine in.
There is a bar table and some tables at the back.
They even have extra bibimbap sauce if you feel there is not enough in your dish.
Basically you order near the entrance and wait for the food.
The menu is clearly display on the wall with pictures, however you need to pay extra for drinks but there is a $3 discount for takeaway orders.
I really wanted the dessert but it was for dine ins only.
I was attracted by the dessert because it was sake tiramisu [green tea or chocolate flavour] which I can imagine tasting nice.
After ordering, I was surprised the food came really fast despite they had only opened for about a week.
But then when you think about it, they have a branch in Central where fast pace is a must.
The food was contained in paper box just like Chinese takeaways in America.
The packaging was quite successful because it caught the attention of an Oz who even wanted to know where this joint was and what they served. The good thing about these paper boxes is that there is no CFC taste.
From their menu, it seems they have Korean food and Singaporean food.
Bibimbap with teppanyaki ox-cheek
Bibimbap with teppanyaki chicken
Curry chicken & egg served with baked coconut rice
Laksa char kway teow
Yaki-udon with teriyaki chicken
Yaki-udon with mushrooms medley.
Daily special - wrapped rice with abalone sauce
In the evening they have Asian fusion tapas which sounds interesting too!
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Yaki-udon with mushrooms medley:
This was yaki style so it was expected to be slightly sweet.
The udon noodles were evenly coated with yaki sauce and it was sprinkled with some parsley.
There was also a hint of truffle taste because there was some truffle oil in it which enhanced the udon and the mushrooms even more. The udon was different from the usual udons, the texture was similar to the Shanghainese thick noodles.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Wrapped rice with abalone sauce:
Although this was the cheapest on the menu, it tasted quite nice.
It was still wrapped in lotus leaf in the box, the rice was lovely and fragrant with abalone sauce taste.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
For improvements, they should have soup just like their Central branch and have desserts that you can order for takeaways too.

Thanks to Ivy who got me this all the way from Tuen Mun because she knows that I like Pandan flavoured cakes, also her mum because she got these in the morning as these swiss rolls are sold out like hotcakes in the morning.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Pandan swiss roll:
The cake tasted similar to the paper wrapped cakes with a lovely pandan flavour and cream in between it.
Overall it was really nice and filling.

[Review 2131] Spicy fried chicken drumsticks @ 麥當勞 McDonald's

https://www.openrice.com/zh/hongkong/review/spicy-fried-chicken-drumsticks-mcdonalds-e2273852
I love fried chicken and McDonald's finally have fried chicken legs but they are spicy.
Their chicken wings are spicy too and I find them not substantial enough.
I hesitated about getting the chicken drumsticks because I was quite sure it would have the same chili in it.
However I walked past and someone was eating it and it seemed that it only had black pepper so surely it wouldnt contain chili as well as black pepper.
Anyway I tried it.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Fried chicken drumsticks:
I was surprised it was a whole chicken leg, the thigh bone had been removed so it only had the drumstick bone in it.
The Msg in the chicken was so strong that after one bite I needed water. The chicken had been freshly cooked hence the temperature of the chicken was really really hot.
As for the coating, it tasted like over cooked tempura which is denser and cracker like.
Unfortunately I found the coating too spicy to the extent that everything else tasted bitter.
The rest of the food tasted how they should ie the fries and nuggets.

On your way to OpenRice you are bound to pass this shop if you are coming by MTR.
Even though I am not fond of their cakes I always end up getting something from here.
So far the cheese chicken pie is the best and the cakes are just so-so.
This time I got the cake mille feuille.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Cake mille feuille HKD17:
It had dry white brittle cream on top which was quite artificial.
The rest of the cake was just so-so, it was cake sandwiched in between some flakey pastry layers.
The sweetness was just right, but this cake was not really my cup of tea.

[Review 2129] Sweet slushy melon refresher @ 常嚐甜品 Sweety Garden

Tried to come here two times before but the first time when they were in Jordan they had just relocated.
I tried again this summer but they were in the middle of being filmed so decided to try it later.
The new branch is located near the DNA mall on the corner which stands out because it is bright pink.
Anyway, thanks to Sweety Garden for inviting me and I was able to try their desserts finally.
It was really nice of them to let me invite IVY so that I could share the slushy melon, otherwise it would be too much if I had it to myself.
The decor in this dessert joint is really nice too matched by their menu and their dessert items.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Dessert platter:
This was a platter of three desserts: chocolate pudding, molten chocolate and orange cake and vanilla icecream.
The shape of the vanilla icecream was a perfect sphere.
Out of the three I loved the molten chocolate and orange cake because in other dessert houses it is just plain chocolate and with the orange flavouring it had more depth to it.
The chocolate pudding was served in a cute cup and was smooth and silky and not too sweet.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Melon slush:
Apart from melon there are other fruits to choose from such as watermelon, apple (served in a dragonfruit), papaya, coconut etc.
The melon is seasonal so it depends what melon they have at that time.
The melon that I had was honeydew melon which was lovely and sweet, the melon was grounded with milk to make this lovely slush tower.
The liquid in the slush goes to the bottom, so the top is quite solid and the base is slushier than the top.
After you finished eating the slushy melon, there is real melon fruit in the melon which is already sliced and convenient to spoon out.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Once again thanks for Sweety Garden for their delicious desserts especially the melon slush because I really wanted to try that.

[Review 2128] Fish in tomato herb sauce @ 同心 Tung Sim cafe

Gave this place another random visit again because I didn’t know what to eat.
There were two choices I wanted to choose: Deep fried chicken leg and the fish in herbs sauce.
I preferred the fried chicken but Chinese style restaurants always give you a useless plastic spoon and chopsticks with the food in a CFC box, which makes the food impossible to eat.
In the end I ordered the fish.
While I was waiting, it was irritating there was a bin for cigarettes stubbs which were not put out properly giving you the freshest second hand smoke you could ever possibly want!
Since my last visit prices have gone up by $1 from $23 to $24 take away price.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Fish in tomato herb sauce:
I thought the sauce would be white but it was tomato with herbs, the fish was coated in eggy soft batter.
The fish tasted ok, obviously they used frozen filets.
The tomato sauce was thick and strong and the rice tasted a bit off.

[Review 2127] Häagen-Dazs xmas delights and new mint icecream @ Häagen-Dazs

I was really glad to be invited to the Christmas Haagen Daaz tasting session, which was really special this time, because they had the chocolate fondue and the new mint leaves and chocolate icecream.
For Christmas they have come up with so many enchanting and fairytale like desserts especially the Christmas mushroom house.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
New Christmas cake series:
Little Santa Claus/Christmas Carol
Christmas Mushroom House
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Snowy Banana Split:
This was really nice and there was a scoop of vanilla, chocolate and strawberry icecream as you would normally get in a traditional banana split dessert.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Happy Christmas Tree:
There is a take away version of this too!
It was really fun how the scoops of icecream were sandwiched in between two thin pieces of christmas tree shaped chocolates with round holes for the scoops of icecream to protude and it reminds me of a real christmas tree with huge baubles of different colours!
If they had candy strings or something similar to resemble the tinsel then it would look even more like a Christmas tree.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Winter Snowman:
Winter Snowman
This is the first time I have tried their Creme brulee because usually ice cream is the first thing I come for.
The creme brulee was surprisingly delicious, smooth and velvety too.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Fondue (X'mas Version):
The usual fondue version is the plain 72% melted chocolate but for Christmas they have a piece of snowflake shaped white chocolate on top.
The chocolate that was dipped goes hard imediately and I love the way it makes a crunch when you eat it.
It was nice trying practically most of the popular flavours dipped in chocolate, my favourite was the green tea and chocolate.
The fondue was a really fun experience, so enjoy the ice-cream before it melts or it will slip from your fondue forks when you are dipping it in the chocolate.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Mint leaves chocolate ice cream:
When I first tried it at the LKF branch I did not know there were real mint leaves in the icecream, but after expert introduction of this icecream at this tasting session I had a proper look and I could see real mint leaves in it as shown on the photo.
So far this is my favourite flavour out of the Haagen Daaz range in Hong Kong.
