After a recent visit to their Tai Hang branch for the kids souffle, I found out there was a branch in Wan Chai so decided to try it.
I was surprised there was a branch in Wan Chai but I never expected it to be on Spring Garden Lane because the atmosphere is no where near as good as Tai Hang.
It would have been nice if their new branch was located next to "Dai lung fung" or "Wah sing Cafe".
Perhaps I am slightly biased, but Spring garden Lane and Jaffe road are the worst roads in Wan Chai because the pavements are narrow and people are forced to walk on the road with traffic.
Not only that, there is too much second hand smoke.
Anyway, sat down in the middle of the restaurant and I could smell car fumes and second hand smoke, so it would be great if they installed doors.
Ordered the noodles and kids set.

Nongshim noodles:
The soup base powder and condiments are given to you when the noodles are served.
For the regular instant noodles which are thinner the soup base is readily absorbed but since these noodles are thicker it does not absorb the broth so well, so it takes time for the noodles to be flavoured.

Kid's meal:
I got this because it had a bit of everything, ie scrambled egg, soya chicken leg and crinkle cut chips.
The scrambled egg and fries were nice and the ketchup they used was Del Monte.

Chocolate float:
This came with the kids meal and it was made with Pepsi and Dreyer's rocky road ice cream.
The drink was quite nice but there was too much crushed ice!

Although I love the salads at Beautifood I like to try new things as well and now there is finally something new at Beautifood.
They now serve soup, which costs $30 per cup.
Basically the broth base is chicken bouillon, har-mi infusion and miso and you can choose three items to go in the soup:
Beef
Chicken
Fish
Lobster (+$10)
Lettuce
Spinach
Tofu
Onsen egg
Mixed rice
I finally tried the soup before the tasting at Arome Bakery because I needed something savoury before I can eat sweet things.
I ordered the soup with Tofu, spinach and mixed rice as I was quite hungry as well.

Tofu, spinach and mixed rice soup:
On my first sip, it was quite spicy because they put kimchi in it.
As the soup cooled down I was able to taste more flavours.
I was really glad I chose rice because it was slightly filling and made the soup not so salty.
It was really good they used brown rice (the rice that they use for their burritos)
I ended up really liking the soup so I went back again for the soup again this time trying the lobster.
The tofu was really nice because it was bonito style and the tofu that they used was the firm type which I like.

Lobster, spinach and mixed rice soup:
This time I opted lobster for an extra $10.
The soup was too salty this time but the lobster saved the day.
It was REAL lobster meat from a big lobster claw and not tiny crayfishes that restaurants like to pretend as Lobster!
You can see the lobster patterns on the peach coloured part too!
The lobster meat was divine because it was chunky, fresh, tender and had no shells attached!
The lobster they used was probably from Bo-Innovation which is great stuff!~
You can see the chunk of lobster was as big as the tablespoon!
I doubt you would find lobster chunks this big at other restaurants unless you are paying a high price for it and usually they serve you shredded lobster meat which disappears when cooked!
I will sure be back for the lobster soup again and order the salad as well!
Anyway, I will go again and see if the soup is still salty and see if I get those big chunks of lobster again!

Anyway, next time I will get the soup and salad deal for $68 since the salad is a full portion.
If you are worried about the soup being spicy you can request it without the kimchi spices.

Out of all the Arome Bakery Room tastings, I was really looking forward to this one because of the White strawberry which is also known as the pineberry.

I have always wanted to try this angelic berry which was nearly extinct a few years ago.
The berry turns white when it is ripe and the seeds turn red and it has a hint of pineapple flavour.
The taste of this berry is really sweet and juicy.
Currently they are sold at Citysuper for around $48X for about 10 to 12 berries depending on size.

These cakes are available to order from February the 1st.
For the White strawberry cake, it can only be ordered online on the ABR site from 28th of January to be collected at Arome Bakery branches from 2 Feb - 17 Feb 2013.

On my last visit I saw them prepare baked rice and after I saw them prepare the baked fish with spinach I had to give it a try.
Although it takes a while for the food to be ready, it is definately worth the wait.
The fish was baked from raw so that was why I tried it because I was expecting it to be moist and tender.
It is also interesting that they use a dish as a base and then put foil over it to form a bowl, once it is baked, the foil becomes the dish and they put that into a PVC box.
As the baked rice was really delicious I came back for the baked salmon and rice and tried the chicken wings as well.

Baked rice with fish and spinach:
I was just expecting the fish to taste good because I was expecting the rice to be the usual Chinese style egg fried rice beneath it but it was plain Japanese pearl rice which was even better.
I do not usually bother ordering baked rices in Hong Kong because the rice beneath it is fried rice and has an oily smell after it has been baked.
However the pearl rice was delicious and matched very well with their sauce because it tasted like risotto.
The rice was quite hard but it was quite nice and I wish there was more spinach.

Baked rice with smoked salmon:
The normal version contains surimi crab meat but as they ran out of that it was salmon and sweetcorn only with mushrooms to replace the crabmeat.
Again this was delicious and the sweetcorn tasted natural.

Baked spaghetti with seafood:
The spaghetti was nice and al-dente.

Chicken wings with lemon and honey:
The chicken wings were partially fried and coated with lemon sauce with real pieces of lemon in it.
It would have been great if one of the bones was removed then it would be easier to eat.

Next time I will try the baked rice with chicken in cream sauce.

Had the haggis spaghetti lunch set which includes soup/salad, ice cream and drinks.

Pumpkin soup:
The soup was just the usual soup.

Haggis spaghetti:
Basically it was spaghetti sprinkled with Macsween's haggis.
It was really nice but at the bottom there was too much oil and the crushed garlic over powered the haggis.
It would have been great if there was more haggis.

Ice-cream:
This was vanilla icecream with chocolate syrup drizzled on top.

On my last visit they had a large egg white dessert that was served after nine and you would need quite a few people to share the dessert.
However this time I walked past they had a junior version of the dessert for $39 so I decided to try it.
It was really good because they had a variety of choices for the egg white dessert such as red beans, green beans, mixed fruit, grass jelly, coco de nata and pineapple.
In the end I chose grass jelly.

Junior egg white dessert with grass jelly:
When it came, it was a bowl containing a scoop of dreyer's vanilla icecream (acc to the menu) at the bottom surrounded with grass jelly and topped with whipped egg white.
Compared to the large version, the whipped egg white was not baked but I wonder if it was meant to be baked.
It was decorated with cocoa powder and chocolate syrup.
Overall the taste was really nice and not too sweet because the icecream and whipped egg white complimented the grass jelly nicely.
It was an interesting pairing of Chinese jelly with western dessert elements.

There is now a branch in Wan Chai which I have not checked out yet, but it would be interesting if they were located next to the other Lung Fung restaurant near the historic blue house.

Apart from their famous Sun jook noodles, they also have other delicacies such as the braised pomelo skin and bamboo mushroom soup, so I tried them both.
The preserved ginger, coconut and duck egg was also interesting because the usual pairing is just preserved duck eggs and ginger but here they have coconut too.
I would have tried that but preserved duck eggs are too heavy if you eat too much.

Pickled chinese radish:
These pickled Chinese radish cubes were quite good as a palate cleanser.
They were slightly spicy as well compared to the ones at Lau Sum Kee in Sham Shui Po.
The radish was evenly pickled with a refreshing sour taste.

Braised pomelo peel with shrimp eggs:
I felt that the sauce was too strong and it was too sweet and salty as well.
The top of the pomelo seemed a bit dehydrated as if it was reheated by the microwave.
The sauce surrounding the pomelo was really rich and had finely chopped dried scallops in it as well.

Bamboo mushroom with shrimp eggs:
The bamboo mushroom was served in a soup with shrimp eggs sprinkled on top.
I tried the soup first and it was very viscous and similar to snow fungas soup.
They serve the complete bamboo mushroom with the delicate lacy skirt that hangs beneath the cap which is why the soup was really viscous because that part of the mushroom is slimey.
I was quite impressed because not many places serve the whole bamboo mushroom and it was sand free as well.
