Thanks to the communications team and Lemon Tea for inviting me to try the gourmet buffet at L’hotel elan.
The hotel is located in Kwun Tong conveniently near Ngau Tau Kok MTR station.

L'hotel elan is part of the China Chem group who have other restaurants which I wanted to try such as V-Cuisine that serves innovative dim sums.

When I got the email from the communications teams, their hotel footer was fun and stylish which really makes a difference from the standard emails.

At the hotel, there were lots of stylish elements, the check in counter is not on the ground floor but on the top floor!
It is located on the top floor because the views of Hong Kong are breathtaking, especially at night and there is a beautifully lit pool with deckchairs as well.

The buffet selection was really good, I would have been happy just having the buffet without ordering extra mains because there were so many of my favourites.
Normally when I go to buffets there will only be 2-3 choices that I like, but at Forte I liked most of the choices.
They even had caper berries and pistachio nuts.

The pistachio nuts were deshelled.

My favorite part of the buffet was the antipasto because I love proper Italian and Western dishes and they had portobello mushrooms as well!

Other items I really liked were the buffalo cheese, pistachio nuts, octopus in sun-dried tomato dressing, prawns in pesto.
The buffet costs $228 per person, which includes a soup, drink and a dessert platter.
For $70-$240 extra you can order mains as well.
Although the grapefruit juice was not included in the buffet, it was freshly squeezed and extremely refreshing.
The grapefruit juice costs $65 a la carte.

For the mains, there were three that I wanted to try:
-Polenta with Garden Vegetables & Rich Tomato Concasse
-Ossobuco with Saffron Risotto

-Roasted Whole French Yellow Spring Chicken

In the end I chose the Polenta because you can only order that in Fine Italian restaurants.

The polenta tasted similar to mashed potato and it tasted lovely and cheesy too and similar to thick porridge.
The char-grilled vegetables were delicious.
However I felt that there could be more polenta and less grilled vegetables.
To finish off, I had the earl grey tea with the dessert platter.

There were berries to garnish the dessert platter such as blackberries and redcurrants which are rare in Hong Kong!
For some other tables, I saw them serve just berries.
Overall, the buffet was fit for me and I believe it should be fit for expats too!
It was really good that most of the ingredients were imported and they did not use local items and pretend it was Italian/Western.

Since my last visit, the Chef has changed and the food seems slightly better.

Assorted bread and condiments:
To accompany the bread there was Balsalmic vinegar, citrus peel oil, butter and garlic mayonnaise.
The citrus oil tasted like aromatic oil and the garlic mayonnaise was the best because it was light and had a strong garlic taste.
It tasted really similar to my favorite Arabic Thoom sauce.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Foie Gras with Rhubarb & Shoga Confit:
I was looking forward to this, especially the Rhubarb sauce but when I tried the sauce I forgot there was rhubarb in the sauce because the rhubarb taste was light and the sharpness of the rhubarb taste was not there.
The foie gras was gently pan-fried with slight crisp surface and the sauce paired nicely with the foie gras, but it would be great if the rhubarb taste was stronger.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Poached Lobster Salad with Pea Coulis & Lemon Liquorice:
The lobster salad was quite decent because the lobster was not shredded and you can see the actual claw meat and tail meat as well.
The lobster was fresh and springy but the pea coulis tasted exactly like mashed peas but it was slightly dry.
When I saw lemon liquorice on the menu, I thought it was going to be a vinaigrette but I was so surprised it was pieces of Chinese style preserved Lemon and liquorice snacks that people eat.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Beet Root Cream Soup with Sautéed Wild Mushroom & Black Truffle Oil:
This soup was really delicious. At first I wasn't sure if the paring of mushrooms and beetroot would go together but the chef has skillfully sauteed the mushrooms prior to adding it in the soup, so the mushroom flavour was at its max.
The beet root soup was stunning too as it was bright magenta however the black truffle oil was not that apparent.
The wild mushrooms had a nice earthy taste and there were lots of mushrooms in it.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Australian Lamb Chop & Tenderloin Beef with Pan Fried Sweetbread, Baby Artichoke & Green Pea Puree:
The green pea puree was the same as the above and it was a bit dry, but there was delicious gravy with mushrooms.
The potato was pressed with heart shaped cutters giving nice decorative edible hearts in the main dish, however they were slightly too hard.

The beef was slightly stringy with quite a few tendons and it also had a really strong charred taste.
It was also strange because I could smell and taste Parmesan cheese on the beef.
The lamb chop was nice and tender and there was no gaminess.
There were also two pieces of sweetbread [the pancreas (stomach sweetbread) or the thymus gland (neck or throat sweetbread) of an animal, used for food] which tasted like chicken because it was very tender.
Hopefully when they next serve it there could be more baby artichokes and green pea puree as I could not find it or see it on the plate.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Rose & Chocolate Fondant Cake with Vanilla Ice-cream:
The fondant did not really ooze out, but as for the taste the rose was not that strong which was good because I do like eat rose.
Overall the fondant cake was a bit dense and it was similar to eating a brownie.
The rose petals were quite pretty because they were crystallized with sugar.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★

The meal is priced at $488 for one, $888 for two, $1288 for three and $1588 for four people.

After the tasting dinner, Ivy and Mjqueen7e surprised us with some sweets from Nicole La Patissiere.

It was a lovely coincidence that they both bought from there on the same day but at different times.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Macaron Chloe – Chocolate:
The filling for the chocolate was lovely and strong with a heavy cocoa taste.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Macaron Charlotte – Orange:
The filling was similar to orange creme and quite citrus and refreshing.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Macaron Citron Praline – Lemon:
The lemon was nice and refreshing with a zesty lemon taste.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Cookies:

I did not try this because it was floral flavoured.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Orangette:

This was their homemade candied orange peel dipped with dark chocolate.
They were shaped like sticks coated in chocolate and the centre was a bit like jellied orange which had a nice twist.

[Review 2241] Ready for delicious bakery at 85`C @ 85度C 85°C Bakery Cafe

I have alway wanted to try this place for the coffee with sea salt but the location of its first shop was hard to find.

I was glad when I saw a new branch was going to open at the Domain Mall in Yau Tong, but they were not yet open in Christmas, and finally they opened on 25th of January.

When I got there, there was a section for cakes, bakery and a counter for people to order drinks.

The walnut rice milk with pine nuts caught my attention so I ordered that, it was only $12.
In the bakery section, the garlic bread caught my eye because it was crustless garlic bread!
I also wanted to get the Cape croissant but it was too monstrous for me! It was a HUGE croissant cut in half and it had sweet spread in the middle.
I was surprised the drinks and bakery were inexpensive.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Garlic bread:

I knew I was going to like this because it was crustless! It was freshly done so it was still warm.
The bread was so amazingly soft that after I took a bite the bread expanded after it was compressed!
The lovely garlic oil on the soft bread tasted really nice.
The garlic oil was not too salty so it was delicious.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
walnut rice milk with pine nuts :

This drink was really thick, just like those American milkshakes and there were hints of ground walnuts and pinenuts.
I asked for it to be less sweet so the sweetness was just right.
The drink was very filling.

[Review 2240] Okinawa delights in Hong Kong @ 樂宴 Rakuen

29/01/2013
樂宴 Rakuen
銅鑼灣登龍街28號永光中心12樓
12/F, 28 Tung Lung Street, Causeway Bay
https://www.openrice.com/zh/hongkong/review/okinawa-delights-in-hong-kong-e2281725

Ever since I saw pictures of the seagrapes and jewel leaves I have always wanted to try them.

I have not been to Okinawa before but I was surprised to see that they have other cuisines in their cooking such as squid ink rice and salted pigs knuckle on the menu.

As there were so many items to try, we decided to try items that could not be easily ordered elsewhere, so we did not order much of sashimi/sushi/grilled items.

The restaurant is decorated really nice with lots of Japanese ornaments and displays.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Sea grapes:

They taste slightly salty and it was quite fun to eat them, the tiny capsules pop with fluid.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Jewel leaf:

These Jewel leaves were magic and stunning, they appear to have tiny water droplets on the surface but they are tiny sacs of liquid.
When you touch them those droplets do not come off.
Jewel leaves are scientifically called Mesembryanthemum crystallinum which is covered with large, glistening bladder cells, commonly called common ice plant, crystalline iceplant or iceplant.
When you eat them, they are delicate and crispy and just collapse into liquid.
Its almost like a fibreless vegetable!
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Fermented beancurd:

This was just a small piece of beancurd but it was really flavoursome, the texture of this was really silky and melts in your mouth like butter.
The wine taste was really aromatic and could be quite salty so it is advised to eat with rice or other items.
I had it with the sausage platter and it was quite nice.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Home made peanut flavoured tofu:

This was solid tofu that looked like Burrata cheese. There were no crushed peanuts inside it.
The texture was really interesting because it was similar mochi and jelly mixed together and the taste was lovely and savoury.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Deep fried pork with taro:
I found this slightly sweet but the mashed taro and pork were really nice together.
There was more taro than pork which made the texture similar to croquettes.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Camembert cheese topped with spicy fish roe:

The fish roe was quite spicy, but the light cracker and creamy cheese tasted nicely together.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Fried rice with seaweed and pork:

Compared to the squid ink rice, I preferred the squid ink rice because the rice has a pan-fried taste (wok taste) which I am not accustomed to, but if you are local then it should taste nice.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Squid ink fried rice with egg:

I was surprised that they have adapted other cuisines in Okinawan dishes such as the squid ink rice.
The squid ink taste was really strong and there were pieces of octopus tentacles in it too.
The fried egg on top was nicely done and gave a nice colourful contrast to the rice.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Sea urchin wrapped in rudder fish:

The sea urchin was really fresh so there was no need for wasabi or soy sauce.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Sausage platter:

This was similar to Western sausages, they were also served with dijon mayonnaise.
The taste of the sausages were nicely balanced with the sauce.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Deep fried spicy pork knuckles:

This dish is really similar to the Chinese deep fried pork knuckles but it was really delicious.
The knuckles have been fried to the point that the skin is almost like gel and hard to pick up with chopsticks and when you eat it, it is almost gooey.
Overall they were really delcious but could have been less salty because in contrast to the rest of the dishes, this one had a really strong taste.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Dessert platter (okinawa black sugar cake, sweet purple potato icecream, baumkuchen cake:

The okinawa black sugar cake was served warm and it was not too sweet covered with bean flour.
The icecream was really nice and tasted natrual which I ate with the Baumkuchen cake because I felt that the butter taste was a bit too strong for me.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Drinks:
For drinks I had Bittermelon tea which was from Japan, it comes in a bottle and the bitter taste is not strong at all.
There is Jasmine tea too which comes in a huge can.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Dishes I would definately come back for: tofu, squid ink rice, jewel leaves, stir fried bitter melon and pork.

[Review 2239] Savoury dutch baby with non authentic currywurst @ WIRED CAFE

After trying the delicious sweet dutch baby at the Causeway Bay branch I was craving to try a different one.
At this branch, they have savoury ones too.

There was:
-Tomato and mushroom
-Proscuitto and cheese
-Currywurst

I have always wanted to try authentic Curry wurst so I ordered the Curry wurst dutch baby which was the most expensive one out of the three.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Curry wurst dutch baby:

Curry wurst is a snack in Germany consisting of steamed, then fried pork sausage cut into slices and seasoned with curry ketchup (ketchup or tomato paste blended with generous amounts of curry powder, or a ready-made ketchup-based sauce seasoned with curry and other spices).
When the dutch baby arrived, the pancake did not rise properly and the taste of the sauce had no curry flavour.
The curry powder on the sausage was near nothing and the tomato ketchup was Del Monte which does not taste like ketchup. I think I could probably buy better curry wurst sauce at the supermarket under the HERTA brand because they specialise in curry wurst sauces.

The review below shows some curry powder on the sausages but the review also mentions that there was no curry taste.
The sausages were rather heavy and had cheese in the middle, they looked darker than the sausages shown on the product shot.
The pancake did not taste as good as the sweet one I had at Causeway Bay.
If I knew the sauce was not authentic, I would have chosen the basic tomato and mushroom dutch baby.
