[Review 2532] Toko Surabaya at Quarry Bay @ 泗水印尼商店 Toko Surabaya

Came on the right day but at the wrong time because quite a lot of the food was sold out.
It is located in the residential area of Quarry Bay between Quarry Bay MTR and Tai Koo MTR.
Locating this place was easy and I felt that it was easier walking from Tai Koo MTR than QB MTR because it is downhill and the station is not so irritating.
This joint sells Indonesian goods and foods and there is a table to dine there too.
It has been here for ages and LittleMeg and "sainamdaiocknam" has dined here before so I was expecting the food to be good here.

Originally I wanted the flavoured yellow ginger rice but it was sold out so I got the Indonesian assortment with rice.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Indonesian assortment with rice:

It was rice topped with beans, egg, peanuts, chicken, beef rendang and Chayote slices.
I liked the Chayote slices (Buddha's hand melon) because it was sweet and soft but not many people eat them in Hong Kong because they are used for soups and people find them tasteless.
The rest of the meat had strong coconut taste and the beef was slightly spicy but nice.

[Review 2531] Mini chiffon series @ 美心西餅 Maxim's Cake Shop

Saw the poster for these new Mini Chiffon series which looked cute.
There are three flavours: chocolate, pandan and vanilla seed.
The pandan and chocolate are not new except for the vanilla seed.
They had Jasmine flavoured floral pudding which reminded me of the pudding I had at The Dining Room.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Mini chocolate chiffon:
The chocolate chiffon just tasted like the usual soft chocolate cakes sold at Maxims, it was not great but tasted better than the Vanilla seed chiffon.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Mini vanilla seed chiffon:
The taste was disappointing, you could not taste any vanilla or any vanilla seeds in it at all.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Both these cakes were nicely presented but in terms of taste there was nothing special about it.

[Review 2530] Chinese chocolate swiss rolls @ 凱施餅店 Hoixe Cake Shop

Not that I like this place but the association is limited to a budget of $4 for person.
They used to get egg tarts and butter cakes from this place but no one likes it.
So now they got the Swiss roll which can be sliced and shared.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Chocolate Swiss roll:

Thankfully the chocolate Swiss roll tasted normal, they also had the original one which was disgusting.
This chocolate roll is not nice but at least its not too sweet and the chocolate covers the nasty salty buttercream.
It did not end up going directly to the bin along with the egg tarts and butter cakes.
It is hilarious every month listening to the comments from the Westerners because the East cannot obviously meet the requirements of the West!

Hilarious comments from Westerners:
"It tastes like sock"
"Is it edible?"
"It's disgusting"

But with a budget of $4 per person and limited manpower there is not much you can ask for.

[Review 2529] Crispy tofu fish puffs @ Kam Wing Tai 甘永泰魚蛋

After trying these on my first visit, I was back for more.
They have two branches next to each other and I always go to this one.
I am slightly confused because some reviews say that it is minced prawn tofu puffs but the woman that sells it says that it is minced fish.
The exterior of this looks like smelly tofu with an interesting surface similar to loofah/bamboo pith.
This texture is created by slicing tofu puffs in half, turning it inside out, stuffing it with minced fish paste, sticking them on skewers and frying them.
The exterior is extremely crunchy, and the filling is slightly chewy with lovely fish taste.
It costs $10 per stick with table tissue wrapped around it which keeps my fingers lovely and clean.

[Review 2528] Thai style Ice lollies at Cheung Chau @ 花園雅座 The Garden Cafe/Pub

On my previous visit to Cheung Chau I have always been captivated by this stall selling ice lollies but I never tried it because there were always people surrounding it.
I found the huge revolving metal barrel/drum interesting and the Chinese letters seem to say that they are made to order.

Anyway, I am not quite sure how they can freeze the ice lollies that quickly but all of the lollies are in a slim metal mould with a chopstick in the middle acting as a lolly stick!
They look similar to the British brand of WALL's mini milk ice lollies

I have not been to Thailand before so I do not know what Thai style ice lollies are meant to be.

These Thai style ice lollies only cost $8 and the size was not too big which was good.
It was perfect for people who were going to try snacks at every stall.
The ice lollies probably froze quicker at that sizel.

There were eight flavours: Watermelon, sesame, tea, coffee, coconut, mango, melon and taro.
I only considered the taro because the rest were standard Chinese flavours which I was not fond of.
After ordering, the guy rotates the drum/cylinder to get the required flavour.
He either lets you take it out of the mould or he takes it out for you.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Taro ice lolly HKd4:
The ice lolly was quite watery and icy, it was not milky but tasted of taro.
The sweetness was just right and the size was not too big which was good because it meant I could try other delicacies on the island.
Basically they tasted the same as WALL's mini milk ice lollies with taro flavour.

[Review 2527]Festive steamed buns for the Bun Festival @ 反斗奇冰 Toy Store

I never eat Chinese steamed buns because I don't like the fillings and it is frankly too sweet.

At this stall they had the usual boring lotus seed, red beans and custard, but then I saw two unusual flavours which were taro and pumpkin.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Steamed bun with pumpkin filling:

There was not much filling inside which was good and the size was smaller than the buns sold at the stalls nearby.
The pumpkin filling was natural pumpkin meat which was not too sweet.
Although these flavours are unusual for Festive buns, you can get these flavours easily at bun specialists such as Tong Kee and Mr Bao Dim.

[Review 2526] Deliciously guilty secret unveiled @ Secret Ingredient

20/05/2013
Secret Ingredient
(online store)
https://www.openrice.com/zh/hongkong/review/deliciously-guilty-secret-unveiled-e2297648

Thanks to Secret Ingredient for letting me try their delicious meals.

Now with Secret Ingredient everyone can be a master chef if they keep their secret while Secret Ingredient does the hard work and thinking!

Basically at Secret Ingredient they offer so many delicious and healthy dishes that are made simple for you to cook.
All the ingredients are marinated, washed, cut for your convenience.

Each ingredient is labelled with an alphabet and the recipe is as simple as ABC, you just look for the required letters and put those ingredients in.
The instruction sheet is crystal clear and tells you what cooking utensils are needed.

After browsing their website, I was really impressed because the dishes they offered were dishes that you would expect to order in restaurants, but now they can be easily cooked in everyone's homes and you can pretend to be master chef without anyone knowing the secret behind.

I loved the Western dishes they offered.

Examples of the dishes they offer:
-Crunchy Tilapia with Fennel Tzatsiki and Mediterranean Couscous
-SI’s Tuna Tacos with Fresh Guacamole and Signature Chilli-Parm Corn

The orders are ready on the same day if you order before 5pm and can be delivered to your home or office.

I was amazed by their hospitality because I really wanted to try the salad, desserts, soup, and vanilla soda too and they were able to accommode that.

After I made the order, their menu was changed the next day and they informed me that I could take a look at the new menu too and change my order if I found something else even better.

Anyway, I was such a greedy pig and tried:
Greek Salad
Pumpkin Pie
Pecan Pie
Celeriac Soup
Vanilla Dry Soda
Veggie Thai Curry

I was really looking forward to cooking again because the environment and climate in Hong Kong is too hot and the accommodation here is so cramped compared to the "normal conditions" in the UK which I took for granted.
Luckily it was not that hot the day I cooked and just as I thought everything was going according as planned I was furious to find out that the cooker was out of gas.

In the end I resorted to using a rice cooker to cook and surprisingly it turned out fine.

My food was delivered in a lovely brown paper bag.
The items were packed in perfect equilibrium with the sauces at the bottom giving the bag a sturdy base and platform for the other ingredients on top.
Some of the vegetables were vacuum packed which kept the vegetables fresh and other ingredients were packed neatly in clear tubs and lettered.

I am sure it was just as fun for them packing my order as it as for me unpacking it!
All the packaging they use is environmentally friendly, corn based and not plastic.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Greek Salad:
The greek salad was an easy starter, it was just finding the required letters and mixing them together.

There were delicious yellow peppers, feta cheese, olives, cucumber, parsley and purple onions and dressing.
The salad was colourful and sweetly delicious because of the yellow peppers and the feta and olives paired perfectly with the onions giving a crunchy Greek salad medley.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Veggie Thai Curry:
Unfortunately, I had to use a rice cooker for this because I ran out of gas, but it still worked.

I only failed with the noodles because I left them for too long so they were a bit soft, but cooking the Thai curry sauce was easy as 1-2-3 and the curry pastes and ingredients supplied smelt so gorgeous with plenty of lemongrass leaves which is an essential for Thai green curry.

The vegetables tasted amazing because the curry sauce that was developed by them was delicious and when the noodles were mixed in, it absorbed that delicious curry sauce.
It was slightly spicy with a delicious creamy coconut taste.

It was truly a hearty vegetarian meal with broccoli, baby sweetcorn, aubergines, potatoes and fresh peas.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Celeriac Soup:
The soup was in a vacuum sealed bag so all you had to do was boil it in water and pour the contents in a bowl.

The apple was the only ingredient I had to cut because it oxidises easily.

The taste of the soup was also amazing, it was creamy and full of celery flavour, the pieces of apple and the celery soup were delicious together and the pairing of celery and apple always works.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Pumpkin Pie:

I have been craving for this ever since Thanksgiving because Pumpkin pie is gorgeous, it tastes different from normal pumpkin because the pie version is mixed with cinnamon and other spices and the texture of the pumpkin pie filling was thick and creamy.
The sweetness was just right and the crust thin and crispy.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Pecan Pie:

The pecan pie was also delicious and I am sure anyone would like it, the sweetness was just right with lovely pecan nuts.
Both pies were delicious and I was so lucky that Secret Ingredient partnered with Tai Tai Pie Pie to launch their first dessert collection, otherwise I would not known about their delicious pie collection.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Vanilla Dry Soda:
This is the BEST soda I have tried in my life. If you know me, I rarely drink sodas because they taste artificial and I find them syrupy, but this bottle of dry soda was PURE soda.
What I mean by that is the taste was NATRUAL and it tastes like fizzy water with a hint of vanilla and no other artificial tastes.
