[Review 3296] Roast pork mania @ 旺豐美食

To be honest, their daily specials from the kitchen suck and in general the food is too salty!
It is a grubby restaurant and you can normally get seated quite quickly because there is no queue.
The simple items at this place taste better.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Roast pork with rice:
As you can see, the roast pork was evenly sliced, it was tender and moist.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Roast pork chow mein:

This was also delicious because of the roast pork.
The spring onions, onions and beanshoots enhanced the taste by making it more aromatic.
Again it would have been perfect if it was not so salty.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Crispy roast pork:

Not really my cup of tea, but I liked the crispy skin only.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Egg and spam:

The eggs were done so nicely.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Roast pork macaroni:

Again the broth was too salty, but the macaroni was the best I have had because it was al-dente and tasty.
The broth was clear without any oil poured over it.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Interesting finds:

When I left the place, it was interesting to see a bowl of water with loose change in it.

[Review 3295] Finally tried this restaurant @ 上海三六九菜館 3.6.9. Restaurant Shanghai Food

上海三六九菜館  3.6.9. Restaurant Shanghai Food

G/F, 30-32 O'Brien Road, Wan Chai
https://www.openrice.com/zh/hongkong/review/finally-tried-this-restaurant-e2356518

This restaurant is quite historic in Wan Chai because it has been here for ages.
The decor is old and they use red tablecloths.
As you can see the menu is all in Chinese which was why I didn't try this place earlier and the restaurant seems busy all the time and the waiters are rushed.

Dined there when it was empty and the waitress was patient and helpful.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Noodles:

I loved the broth which was clear chicken soup, it was loaded with lots of prawns, chicken, thick cut ham and spring onions.
Unfortunately I did not like the type of noodles they served because it was similar to ramen.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Tea:
Every person who sits down will be given a cup of tea which is compulsory and costs $3.
Luckily the tea was hot and it had a fragrant Jasmine taste otherwise it would have been a waste of money.

[Review 3294] ANTIPODEANESS @ ANTIPODEAN Cafe

10/04/2014
ANTIPODEAN Cafe
上環差館上街3號
3 Upper Station Street, Sheung Wan
https://www.openrice.com/zh/hongkong/review/antipodeaness-e2356488

When this place opened last year, I had high expectations and there were so many items I wanted to try.
But every time I got there, it was always closed.

It was finally open on this visit and there were only two items I tried because the rest weren't launched yet.

The items I wanted to try were:
Chicken Mushroom & Tarragon Pie
Cheese Strata with Prosciutto, Basil & Spinach
Breakfast Ravioli drizzled with Creamy Sage & White Wine Sauce
Shakshuka with handmade pita bread
[Shakshuka is a dish of eggs poached in a sauce of tomatoes, chili peppers, and onions, often spiced with cumin]

This was the menu they were serving.

The menu may have changed by now because I tried this in October 2013~

While I was waiting for the food, I took photos of their cute salt and pepper shakers and ketchup bottle.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Rolled up omelette:

This was a rolled-up spinach omelette with goats cheese & dried tomatoes on a slice of toasted sourdough!
The omelette texture was really interesting just like a swiss roll.
It was soft, moist and fluffy with strong spinach taste which went nicely with the goats cheese.
I don't know how the spinach omelette was made, but it took alot of effort and time!
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Louise Slice $20:
The Louise cake is an old fashioned New Zealand favorite consisting of a thin layer of cake or biscuit topped with raspberry or plum jam, coconut meringue and then baked in the oven.
I got it because it was really similar to this British jam and coconut slice.

It tasted quite similar to the one I had at school but it was too sweet.

[Review 3293] Lunch buffet @ O'Phillie's irish restaurant & pub

Tried this restaurant ages ago but didn't get motivation to write it up until now because someone has already reviewed it.
They probably don't have the buffet for lunch anymore because they said they would be serving the Irish carvery instead which would make them another competitor because Delaney's in Wan Chai also does good roasts.

I have also tried their brunch sets too, so there will be another review coming up.

On this visit, I had the salad buffet which included tea.

The food varied from pasta, rice, meats but half of it wasn't really Irish food.

Here was what I had:

The pasta was good and my favourite was the broccoli and cauliflower in cream sauce, roast potatoes and gammon ham.

[Review 3292] Scrumptious chicken Tikka waffle @ Waffills

I don't often go to this stretch of Causeway Bay because there are quite a few traffic lights that annoy me, however I was adamant to try the savory waffles which were not launched on the first visit.

There are five savory waffles on the menu:
- Cheese burger waffle
- BBQ pulled pork
- Chicken tikka massala
(chicken, red pepper, red chili, garam masala)
- Thai prawn
(prawns, thai spices, tomatoes and coconut milk)
- The vegetarian waffle
(cauliflower, peas, carrots, potatoes and lentils)
 0 讚好

I chose the chicken tikka because I love chicken tikka.
[There is a Waffle stamp on the corner because I forgot to bring my card to be stamped]

On my next visit, I am going to try the vegetarian and the Thai prawn waffles.

While I was waiting, I was surprised to meet the Chicken Tikka filling supplier because he was also trying out the chicken tikka waffles.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Chicken Tikka waffle:

I loved the box because it made it easier to eat without getting my fingers sticky or burnt.
It was simply delicious, I loved the structure of it because it was actually two waffles fused together with filling in the middle and not two loose waffles with filling just about to fall out.
The taste of the waffle was not sweet which was great because I am fed up with all these Asian places doing savory items with sweet breads and pastries.
They are just like the French crepes were they use proper savory bases for savory crepes.
Anyway, I loved the savoury taste and the chicken tikka filling was gorgeous in delicious gravy with pieces of onion and tender chicken and it was not too spicy either.

The savory waffle reminded of Taiyaki but tasting a million times better.

[Review 3291] The new stars: milkshakes and burritos @ Yonge Piggies

09/04/2014
Yonge Piggies
上環蘇杭街1號地下
G/F, 1 Jervois Street, Sheung Wan
https://www.openrice.com/zh/hongkong/review/the-new-stars-milkshakes-and-burritos-e2356411

I have tried their hotdogs before but they were not my cup of tea.

Found out recently that they have burritos and milkshakes so came back to try them.

The milkshakes that they do are:
CHOCOLATE
VANILLA
BLUEBERRY
STRAWBERRY
CANADIAN MAPLE
PEANUT BUTTER CHOCOLATE
CHOCOLATE BACON
EARL GREY
SEA SALT CARAMEL

They used to have MARSHMALLOW and MYSTERY (mixed flavour) milkshake as well.

If you are missing FOODJUNKIES lobster rolls, they serve that here too for $140.
The decor has not changed since my last visit.

Here was what I tried:
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Sweet potato fries:
They were the same as the ones at Heirloom but saltier and were fried too long.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Beef burrito bowl :
The chicken was sold out so had to get the beef.
The beef was so chewy that I didn't eat it and I was not the only one complaining according to mjhk's review.
I found the rice oily and tasteless too.
Quoted from mjhk's review:
"The first was very chewy, quite poor quality meat....The rice is oddly yellow in color and tastes of tumeric and not much else."
http://www.openrice.com/restaurant/commentdetail.htm?commentid=2353765&tc=sr2&con=rvw
I liked their refried beans, sour cream and the usual stuff but they don't give you much here.
Normal burritos don't have olives but they allow you to pick anything from their condiments section which is why your seeing them.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Came here twice for milkshake and I believe the lady usually makes them because the guy wasnt sure and the ones he made were sweeter.

Quoted from mjhk's review:
It was clear that the people working the counter were googling "how to make a milkshake."

They make all their milkshakes with icecream.

Sea salt caramel:

This was made by the guy and it was too sweet.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Earl grey :

This was the only one I liked because it had a really strong earl grey taste.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
chocolate and bacon:

The chocolate and bacon was very disappointing because it was just blended chocolate icecream so it was a waste of $40 on blended chocolate icecream which you can get at 7-11.
Although there were pieces of crispy bacon but that was expected because it is a milkshake with bacon!!

[Reviwe 3290] Rock-K-Roll @ K-Roll

K-Roll

Shop 104, Brim 28, 1/F, Causeway Centre, 28 Harbour Road, Wan Chai
https://www.openrice.com/zh/hongkong/review/rock-k-roll-e2356410

This was my first visit to K-Roll because whenever I am in Sheung Wan I end up eating elsewhere.
The staff were nice at this branch and there is a nice sitting area.

Here was what I tried.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Crab salad K-roll:

The rolls were uniformly sliced with a clean cut.

Each piece was so moreish that I finished it quickly.
There was a fresh medley of crunchy vegetables, avocado and crab in the middle.
The crab rolls were simple and delicious that it did not need other sauces.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Prawn korrito:

The idea of this is similar to a burrito but they have used seaweed as a wrap instead.
I loved the freshness of the salad in the middle because you could see that it was colourful and not oxidised.
There was a lovely crunch from the cabbages, crispy pieces as well as the fried prawns.
A very satisfying roll but it needed some chili sauce or something to add more kick to it.
However it was hard to eat because the fillings kept falling out.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
I liked their rolls so much that I finally tried their Sheung Wan branch, but the food and environment is much better here.
