K's British Restaurant
大嶼山梅窩熟食市場C10-C12號舖
C10 & C12, Mui Wo Cooked Food Market, Lantau Island
https://www.openrice.com/zh/hongkong/review/for-c-od-and-country-e2358934
Since my last visit, this place has been given a REAL British facelift it deserves!!
There's no excuse to miss it now because it's the most outstanding restaurant at the cooked food market!!
Lovely Royal Mail post box.
[Pretending to post a letter]
Fish Collection times aka Opening Times!!
Glamourous red phone box with mirrored glass panes.
A touch of royalty!
Typical UK brick walls and cloudy blue skies.
K's British Restaurant is located in Mui Wo's cooked food market which is by the sea with great seaviews depending on where you are sitting.
Shoals of fish on the sea blue wall.
This paragraph is quoted from Prestige magazine which was ABSOLUTELY spot on:
Lovers of fish and chips in Hong Kong had much to mourn about when the last purveyor of the pukka item in Town, the chippy closed a year ago or so.
Illuminated cloudy blue skies.
Overall the new look is good, but it was slightly dim for dining.
Thankfully, K's British Restaurant is here to the rescue!!!
This new STAR is going to bring tourism to Mui Wo or send expats moving there!
The traffic and accessibility is much better than Sai Kung.
Well at least I am tempted.....
THIS PLACE IS TRULY BRITISH AND THIS IS MY FOURTH VISIT!!
PLEASE CARRY ON READING IF YOUR AN EXPAT BECAUSE YOU WON'T APPRECIATE THESE PERFECT CHIPPIE CHIPS IF UR NOT ENGLISH BECAUSE THE HONGKIE STYLE CHIPS ARE BURNT!
THERE IS ALSO HEINZ KETCHUP AND MALT VINEGAR ON THE TABLES.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Cod and chips:
OMG! The battered cod and chips were just OMG!
The cod was succulent and flakey with a uniform batter and the chips were sensational!
This is how a model chip should be, it was fat, with a shiny surface and when you bite into it, the inside of the chip was silky just like molten starchy lava.
Basically the texture of the starchy lava was like velvety thick cream with a slighty chewy soft chip skin.
Eating it piping hot when it is just served tastes the best, if you leave it for a while, the chips get a little bit firmer.
You could smell the gorgeous spud smell just like baked potatoes when it was just served.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Pollock and chips:
Pollock is another fish similar to cod, it is used in fish fingers and fish burgers.
The fried pollock was also to die for, it was different to the cod because the texture of this fish is much softer and silkier and melts in your mouth!
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Tea:
Since my last visit, you can now choose between breakfast tea and Earl Grey.
The tea was served in a Chinese tea pot and the cups they used were those thick rimmed tea cups that you get in chaa chan tengs.
You will notice a difference if your used to thin rimmed cups.
Somehow they reminded me of the cups at BHS and Littlewood's cafeteria except the shape of the cup was different.
But anyway, it was British tea so it was the perfect quencher to go with fish and chips.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Apple pie with REAL Bird's eye custard:
I was elated to see custard on the menu.
Custard is so simple to make and I don't know why places don't have REAL custard.
Normally I have custard with pudding or on its own, but here it is served with fresh apple pie which is made by them.
It was quite nice but I prefer sour apples.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Anyway, I am now hooked on their food and I wish they would open another branch in Central.
Ok, there is HOOKED on Caine Road, but they don't serve these chips and if the ferry was cheaper, I would be here more often!

[Review 3323] McOscar the Grouch who loves trash @ 麥當勞 McDonald's
23/04/2014
麥當勞 McDonald's
上環干諾道中168-200號信德中心2樓267號舖
Shop 267, 2/F, Shun Tak Centre, 168-200 Connaught Road Central, Sheung Wan

When I saw news that the McVeggie burger would be available I was glad.
In UK, it is permanently on the menu called the Spicy veggie sandwich (a veggie patty with chickpeas, coriander and cumin, served with lettuce and cucumber and a dollop of sweet chilli and mayo sauces.)
The Hong Kong version has mushrooms in it and was only available at Cheung Chau during Buddha's festival.
Last year, I deliberately went to Cheung Chau for the McVeggie burger.
http://www.openrice.com/english/restaurant/commentdetail.htm?commentid=2297433
With all the media and rising awareness of Green Monday, McDonald's has decided to serve the McVeggie burger all over Hong Kong until 7th May.
Green Monday is a social enterprise that encourages healthy, environmentally friendly living in Hong Kong. It starts with going meatless on Mondays — an easy and effective way to reduce your carbon footprint and improve your health.
As soon as the burger was launched, I tried the McVeggie and the sweetcorn pie.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Oscar the Grouch:
I think McD's trashed the packaging!!
Instead of designing vibrant wrappers printed with colourful veggie illustrations to promote a healthy burger, they made it look like trash with brown wrapping!!
The cartoon looks like OSCAR the GROUCH from Sesame street who loves TRASH!!!
For improvements, perhaps a white wrapping with mushroom illustrations and colourful words for McVeggie??
The wrapping also reminded me of a TOAD and recycled paper!~!
On the other hand, the sweetcorn pie packaging was bright and eye-catching, you could see people having them.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Sweetcorn pie:
I didn't really like this because sweetcorn is a vegetable and not a dessert so the creamy sweet sauce and sweetcorn tasted weird together.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
McVeggie:
Compared to the one at Cheung Chau, it was disappointing.
The patty was soft, dark and chewy which proves it has been made for quite a while because no one ordered it.
Looking around the restaurant, no one had the McVeggie burger nor was it eye-catching to people who walked past.
There was no mashed potato in the patty compared to the one at Cheung Chau.
I happened to try it again at another branch and it was even worse because there was virtually no sauce on it and it tasted rancid.

[Review 3322] Bare your mind, body and soul for food @ Naked Gurume Gyarari

Naked Gurume Gyarari

1/F, 28 Elgin Street, Soho, Central
https://www.openrice.com/zh/hongkong/review/bare-your-mind-body-and-soul-for-food-e2358766
Naked Gurume Gyarari sounded like a taboo at first!!
When I heard the name I thought it was going to be wildly exotic with topless sexy male models serving food!
However, when I got there, the entrance leading to the restaurant was quite mysterious because it was plain black and white.
Naked Gurume Gyarari combines art with gourmet food and they have an exhibition room next door.
Here was what we tried.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Black truffle lotus roots chips:
Delicious crispy lotus root slices that came with a lovely dip with Yuzu garlic cream and black truffle paste.
I couldn't quite taste the Yuzu but the truffle was nice and strong.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Hotate with jewel leaves:
0 讚好
Diver scallops, mixed mesclan, crispy bacon bits, tofu cheese vinaigrette.
I loved this dish because it had my favourite jewel leaves which are crisp and sweet paired with the fresh tasting scallops.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Lobster risotto bisque:
Smoked turkey cognac reduction, parsley lime risotto, croutons, lobster bisque.
The soup was nice and filling with a substantial amount of risotto, however the saltiness could have been toned down.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Tuna tartar:
0 讚好
Poached quail egg, big eye tuna, cucumber, ginger cilantro truffle oil served on a Crispy wonton wrap.
Delicious minced tartar packed with flavours from the ginger and truffle topped with a perfectly runny quail egg.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Toro y 48 months Iberico ham wrap:
0 讚好
Tuna belly, 48 months Iberico cured ham, seagrapes, negi, mixed quinoa and Shiso cress.
The tuna belly was quite similar to the tuna tartar above but it was refreshed by the juicy seagrapes and flavoured by the Iberico ham while the crunch of the Quinoa balanced out the oiliness.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Fiddlehead fern and shimeji mushrooms (to be launched):
Again another one of my favourites because fiddlehead fern is crisp and sweet, similar to spinach.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Foie gras with guava sorbet:
The foie gras was paired well with blueberries which took away the greasy feeling and the guava sorbet helped to refresh the palette for the main course.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Uni and quinoa pasta:
sea urchin, mixed quinoa, bacon loin, cherry tomato, garlic cream, parmesan and linguine.
The pasta was quite creamy and heavy but the crunchy quinoa helped to balance it out.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Braised tako and bone marrow pasta:
Octopus, bone marrow, tomato, cilantro, quinoa, kombu, bonito and linguine.
The linguine was really tasty in tomato and herb sauce with slices of braised octopus.
On top of the linguine there were two slices of bone marrow which added to the silkiness of the linguine.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Blueberry sushi:
Star anise, Japanese black sugar, muscovaso and pistachio.
The blueberry sushi was fun and creative, it was sponge cake wrapped with thin slices of cucumber which replaces the seaweed.
The taste was surprisingly nice because the cucumber slices and cake were refreshing.
The sauce had some agar in it which made it interestingly viscous

[Review 3321] NUR = Light and Nourishing by Nurdin Topham @ NUR Restaurant
22/04/2014
NUR Restaurant

3/F, 1 Lyndhurst Tower, Lyndhurst Terrace, Central
https://www.openrice.com/zh/hongkong/review/nur-light-and-nourishing-by-nurdin-topham-e2358765
NUR! NUR! NUR! A new concept restaurant which is nourishing, light and gastronomic.
NUR meaning Light in Arabic which is why there are so many light-bulbs in the restaurants and the Chef himself is called Nurdin.
Head Chef Nurdin Topham is a British chef who has worked for almost 20 years’ with Raymond Blanc as well as the best restaurant in the world, NOMA.
The restaurant is really down to earth with a lovely porch, sitting area and home grown herbs which can just be plucked to eat.
For food, there are three different set dinners, LIGHT (a 6-course set dinner for HKD788) or a FEAST of 9 courses for HKD988.
Vegetarians are not left out either because they serve a Vegetarian set too.
We tried the LIGHT set which was fabulous in presentation as well as taste.
Here is what was in it.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Jasmine kombucha :
This was fermented tea with a lovely Jasmine taste. If I wasn't told, I couldn't tell it was fermented because the taste was so pleasant.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Canapes:
A light starter of nourishing vegetables with cute beetroot tacos with watercress cultured cream, baby sweetcorns, carrots with carrot powder and cumin.
Everything on the plate was edible including baby sweetcorn tassels.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
OYSTERS Gillardeau oyster, cucumber, wasabi:
The oyster was half poached which gave it a semi raw but slightly cooked texture.
It was paired with wasabi foam, cucumber pearls and seaweed which went together surpisingly well.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
SALMON Irish organic salmon, beetroot, smoked butter milk:
It had almost every colour on the plate and the stripes on the beetroots were striking.
Each piece of beetroot was fresh, crisp and sweet and the salmon was just divine.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Zen Organic Garden Vegetables:
The salad was colourful and fun to eat because we were given chopsticks for it!!
At the bottom of the bowl, there was a strong cheesy paste which gave the salad an extra kick.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Poached Japanese Taiyouran egg:
The egg was poached so beautifully and it looked like burrata cheese.
Inside, the yolk was perfectly fluid which went nicely with the tasty quinoa beneath it.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Home Made 10 Grains Sourdough with Natural Yeast:
The sourdough was soft and I loved the proper sour tones it had complemented by the earthy mushroom butter.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Roasted Chicken Thigh & Breast Roulade:
The chicken roulade was the best of both worlds, succulent chicken breast wrapped in tender chicken thigh meat on the outside, paired with a crunchy melody of Romanesco broccoli.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Bitter Chocolate, Orange & Hazelnut :
The chocolate was amazingly silky, it was like having chocolate sorbet flavoured nicely with a twist of orange and nutty hazelnuts.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
As a conclusion, the FEAST would be a better option for those with bigger appetites and I wish there were more choices for tea.

[Review 3320] Taiwanese pork chop with rice @ 炊豕店

G/F., 122 Leighton Road, Causeway Bay
https://www.openrice.com/zh/hongkong/review/taiwanese-pork-chop-with-rice-e2358392
Most people who are not from the New Territories are attracted to this place because of the retro decor and green floor tiles.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Pork chop and rice:
The pork chop was succulent and juicy which was not too salty.
Beneath the pork were tasty pickled vegetables which gave the rice a lovely flavour.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
As I am not a fan of Taiwanese food, it didn't really impress me and it was expensive.
It is also annoying that this restaurant has a minimum spenditure per person.
