The locals reprieve!
2014-11-02  1482 瀏覽
The Kai Tak Cruise terminal (formerly Kai Tak airport) does not have many options for food.

Cafe Aberdeen is the only one that serves local chaa tan teng food so you can imagine how overjoyed the locals would be if they were hungry when they found this place because there is absolutely nothing to eat there!!

Luckily, the prices are reasonable.
Ordered the pork chops which do not come with rice so you have to add another $5 for the set which comes with soup and rice.

The soup was ok, nothing spectacular about it, there was no MSG which was good.

The steamed meat patty had no MSG either but again, nothing spectacular about it.

Then came the ugly pork chops which turned out to be amazing, the crispy garlic and chili was delicious and the pork chops were aromatic and juicy.
I would prefer the pork chops to be sliced thinner so that it would be more crispy and tastier.

The tomato rice was cold and oily that it tasted like the Chinese "Western fried rice (sae chau faan)".

It was very sweet too and lacked real tomato taste which is nothing compared to the delicious tomato rice at Healthy chicken.

The Vietnamese rolls were good because the rice wrap was chewy and held everything together.
The dipping sauce was really good and made the rolls tasty.

It was weird you could not order the Vietnamese sausage slices on its own because that is what the previous review suggests.

The noodles were great because the broth had a strong herbal taste but the portion was way too small.

The waffles were surprisingly good with a strong banana taste and I liked the chewy crisp texture.

Dessert fared better.
Chocolate drink was too sweet and powdery.

The baked potato was a bit weird.
 0 讚好

It seemed like a boiled potato that had been scored, stuffed with salami slices and then grilled with cheese and meat sauce.

The potato was too hard and there was not enough sauce.

Apple turnover

The apple turnover was really buttery that you could smell it and the greasiness seeped through the base of paper bag and made it transparent.

Anyway, the puff pastry was too thick and the butter taste was too strong.
The apple filling fared better because it was quite tart but it was apple puree and not pieces of apple.

:: Singmalay series: No 33 ::
++++++++++++++++++++
It has been a while since I last wrote any reviews on Singaporean food or Malaysian food because there are not many new ones about.
The last one I visited was Nyonya Coming in Sai Ying Pun.
Decided to revisit Bak Kut King for their famous pork bone tea and some other dishes.
Here was what we had and it was interesting to similarities of Malaysian food and Thai food.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Grapefruit and prawn salad:
 2 讚好

Started off with a refreshing salad to begin dinner.
The grapefruit was juicy and the prawns were springy.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Malacca Grilled fish cakes:
 2 讚好

This looked similar to Thai fish cakes with lots of lemongrass in it, but unfortunately I am not fond of lemongrass so found it a bit too strong.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Pork bone tea:
 2 讚好

The pork bone tea was served with fried dough stick slices and black soy sauce.
It had a rich herb taste followed by sweetness and a hint of pepper.
As a personal preference I would like the dong gwai to be stronger which can be requested before you order.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Malaysian crispy pork knuckle:
 2 讚好

The pork knuckles were amazing because the meat was soft with a hint of saltiness and the skin was extremely crispy with a slight chewy under side!
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Stir fried winged beans with prawn paste and squid:

This was amazingly, a delicious combination of pungent prawn paste and squid.
The beans were crisp with a sweet centre.
Winged beans are grown in Asia where the humidity is high, and you can find them in most Thai and Indian shops looking like a long frilly leaf.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Salty lemon soda:

I loved the soda because they gave you imported soda and not lemonade or 7up.
A real thirst quencher.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Grilled stingray in Sambal sauce:

This is my favourite fish because the texture is soft and comes off the bone easily.
The Sambal sauce gave it a delicous kick of sweet and spiciness and the stingray was moist and delicate.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Toast with kaya and ube icecream:
This was a huge cube of toast filled with kaya in the middle paired with ube icecream.

This is a must eat item because the kaya paste is divine and not too sweet and the ube icecream is a perfect match with delicate taro flavours that does not over power the kaya taste.

The only thing that I did not like was the butter because it made it a bit heavy.
Apart from ube icecream, I would also like to try pairing it with unsweetened whipped cream or even better clotted cream!!
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
To summarize I definitely recommend the stingray, pork knuckle, winged beans and the toast as dessert.

Sour cherry and pistachio tart

The cherry tart looked delicious so I got it.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Sour cherry and pistachio tart:

The tart pastry was quite hard and crispy but it tasted really buttery with white sugar sprinkled on the edges.
Towards the middle, it was much more yummy with juicy sour cherries and nutty pistachio paste.
