[Review 4425] Figless drink @ 蟹麵館 Crab Noodles

I have always been a fan of this place since trying their first noodle shop in MK.
Then I tried their second branch in Central, which has changed its name to 蟹麵館 and just moved to a better location in LKF.

As I was having dinner, I went for the soups and drink.
I got the drink because I love FIGS and on the menu, it said Figs barley water in Chinese.
Anyway, when it came, the drink had no floating fig seeds but I discovered a Chinese date at the bottom.
If you come from the Western part of the world, you trust the menu but in Hong Kong, the menu is just a rough guide only.
If it had just been barley water on the menu, I would have been happy to discover the Chinese date as it would be a bonus, but as I said the menu is a rough guide in Chinese cuisine.
The soups I had were the crab soup and chicken and Chinese wine soup.
I liked the chicken and wine one because it was tasty and nourishing.

[Review 4424] Could be better @ Indian Turkish Kebab

For Indian and Turkish food, I get my usual fare on the Hong Kong side.
At this place they had some unusual items that were not available at my favourite haunts so went there for it.
The restaurant was empty and the waitress was very pushy.
After the food was ordered, it took ages to come.

Anyway, the Strained yoghurt cacik was just ordinary yoghurt with bits of cucumber in it.
The Black sea anchovy rice was the most disappointing dish because it looked tasty in the picture but the rice was absolutely tasteless and the anchovies were not that fresh and they had a really fishy smell and taste.

The lahmacun was ok, but again the minced meat could have been fresher.

[Review 4423] Soup curry in K-Town @ Samurai の Soup Curry

This is the second soup curry place to open in Hong Kong after Sama curry.
The decor is bright and the music in the background sounds like Reggae and carribean music.
The menu was rather interesting because they serve other items as well such as Indian Lassis!!

The curries are paired with Turmeric rice and the menu was simple and easy to understand.
You choose a broth, spiciness level and meat which is ticked off on the order sheet.

For both curries I chose baby spice but the spiciness of both were different.
Both had the same vegetables in it such as okra, asparagus etc.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆
Natto Curry (baby spice) :

I liked this but it was too spicy for me.

Lamb burger (baby spice) :

The spiciness of this was just right.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆
tumeric rice:

The rice went well with the curry but it lacked turmeric flavouring.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆
Chai lassi:
 1 讚好

I don't like Indian tea but the chai lassi was really nice because the Indian tea spices were toned down by the lassi.
The consistency of the millkshake was not thick enough compared to other lassis.

[Review 4422] Interesting Swiss roll flavours @ 麥田一 The Baker A

I was still hungry after eating at Ilis so I wandered into this bakery.
The Earl Grey roll looked good so I got it and decided to eat there.
As well as Earl Grey, they had other interesting flavours such as tomato and pistachio.
While I was eating, it was so nice of them to give me a cup of water which encouraged me to get the cream puffs as well.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆
Earl grey roll:
The roll was a bit dense but the earl grey chocolate paste in the middle was really nice so the dense roll was forgivable.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆
Cream puffs:
The cream puffs were a bit hard and eggy for my liking but not bad.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆
Tomato roll:
The tomato roll had a strong tomato taste with tomato jelly in the middle but it tasted weird because it was sweet.

[Review 4421] Quite a nice joint @ Ilis

28/06/2015

Shop A1-A2, G/F, 13-15 Hillwood Road, Tsim Sha Tsui

The restaurant I wanted to go was not open so I was wandering around Austin Road and Hill Road but didn't discover anything interesting to eat.
There was the new Let's Jam place but I have already tried the Sai Kung branch.

Went here because the menu was rather weird, they had breakfasts, Japanese food and this salted duck which is not Japanese.
There were two dishes that were interesting, the salted duck and the marinated beef tendons.
I went for the salted duck.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆
Salted duck set:
The salted duck set cost $48 which is about right because the portion is not exactly big and it was bony pieces of duck.

It was quite nice because the duck was tasty but not salty and it tastes like duck that had been soaked in brine.
The rice was Japanese pearl rice which I don't like but it was ok and the soup was a mix of miso soup and Chinese soup with Chinese radish in it.
It was quite a nice meal but it wasn't very filling.

[Review 4420] Improved but could be better @ 京麵 Jeng Noodles

Since the last visit, there are more options such as tofu pieces and more noodle choices but they still don’t have instant noodles as an option.
The broth has improved, it was less salty but I still don’t like their noodles because the texture is too dough like.

[Review 4419] Expat’s secret in Sai Kung @ Jo Jo Indian Cuisine

As well as SK, there is a bigger branch of JoJo's in Wan Chai, but the Wan Chai one is probably better.

Went here because there were not many good Western food choices in SK.

It was filled with expats and then more expats came for late night curries.

I ordered the rice with peas and mushrooms and a Malai, which the waiter said was a popular local dish because it was sweet hence not my cup of tea.
I still ordered it because I like potato croquettes, which were rather sticky and chewy, apart from that I didn't like the cashew nut sauce because it was sweet.
The rice was not tasty on its own because it needed curry to go with it but without the curry it was just salty with a strong cardamom taste.
