Went back for more Chongqing pea noodles, this time the owner shown on the poster was there so I think my noodles were cooked by her.
The peas were whole ones just like the ones on Instagram but unfortunately, I found the noodles too spicy to eat.

[Review 5054] Not just plain rice with pork oil @ 粗菜館 Tso Choi Restaurant

This place is opened by Chua Lam 蔡瀾, so obviously they serve plain rice with pork drippings.
I didn’t think there would be much on the menu which is why I haven’t tried it but the menu was quite surprisingly.
There is a lot of weird Chinese fusion but the combinations matched quite well.
I don’t know how long they can keep this on the menu due to demand but they had pigs brains which I have never tried before so I had to try it while it was on the menu.
Previously I tried to go to Macau for pigs brain soup but it was sold out.
As expected the texture of pig brain is like pate and very thick and doesn’t quite disintegrate in your mouth with a slight bitter and fishy aftertaste.
It was nice how they made it into an omelette but there is quite a lot of cholesterol with the egg as well.
The other dish I liked was the Pigs liver in Sichuan peppercorn sauce.
Each slice of liver was thick and big with a decent velvety foie gras texture similar to the ones they call (wong sa yun) in Chinese.
I won’t eat liver unless the texture is like this because I hate the dry, hard and rubbery ones.
With dinners like this, you have to have rice and the mains were so good that I had two bowls of rice.
The plain rice with pork drippings looked captivating because the pork drippings were served separately so you can decide how much to put on the rice.
The other main dish we had was the pork belly with preserved vegetables.
I am not keen on the pork belly but the preserved vegetables was delicious with rice!!!!

[Review 5053] Fried oyster at Bakudan-Ya Fried Chicken @ 唐揚專門爆彈屋 Bakudan-Ya Fried Chicken

It has been ages since I have been to this street and so much has changed.
There is now a relatively new noodle joint, coffee shop and the rest are mostly Korean joints.
I went to this shop which sells fried chicken but as I was having dinner I couldn’t get the fried chicken because the minimum order was 3 pieces which meant I would be too full for dinner so I just got a fried oyster.
The oyster takes 5 minutes as stated and it was cute that they actually used a timer to time it precisely.
After it was fried, they put sauce and sprinkle herbs on it, which I wasn’t too keen on, but luckily it tasted ok.
The oyster was fresh and coating was crisp and light complimented by the sauce which was not too sweet.

[Review 5052] Wraps from Subway @ Subway

I have never tried the wrap at Subway so decided to try because it costs just the same as the 6 inch sub.
For the meat, I chose the grilled chicken and they sliced it so that it fits in the wrap and for the vegetables and sauce I had my usual olives, tomatoes, cucumbers with BBQ sauce.
The taste was ok but it was quite messy to eat and the wrap texture was quite chewy.

[Review 5051] Okinawa Yomitan menu @ 目利きの銀次 Mekiki no Ginji

Okinawa Yomitan menu

At Mekiki no Ginji, they are now serving the Okinawa Yomitan menu which are Okinawa dishes with ingredients from Okinawa.
Okinawa Yomitan menu:
I quite liked the menu because the bacon and corn dog were quite British in taste.
+++
Sausage, cheese and potato mixed okonoiyaki:
I loved the finely shredded cabbage and soft pieces of potatoes covered in thick sauce.
+++
Fresh salad topped with sauteed thick sliced bacon:
This was salad in wasabi sauce with thick sliced bacon on top.
The bacon reminded me of gammon ham.
+++
Grilled juicy sausage:
These were juicy little sausages that reminded me of chipolatas but they tasted like pepperami.
+++
Juicy sausage corn dog:
This was really similar to battered sausage except the batter is made of sweet potato.
+++
Okinawan sweet potato paste pancake:
I couldn't get enough of this because the pancake was fluffy and soft without being too sweet.
The pancake had a nice thickness and the sweet potato cream was quite starchy with lots of sweet potato mixed into it.
+++

[Review 5050] Free newspaper clippings @ 合時小廚 Hop Sze Restaurant
12/02/2016
合時小廚 Hop Sze Restaurant
西灣河筲箕灣道39號麗灣大廈地下
G/F, Lai Wan Building, 39 Shau Kei Wan Road, Sai Wan Ho
https://www.openrice.com/zh/hongkong/review/free-newspaper-clippings-e2543567
The menu drives people away because the options are weird.
For $102 you get a choice of vegetables, a choice of mains and two bowls of rice.
The reason it turns people away is that most of the choices on the mains are noodles or fried rice and then you get another two bowls of plain rice for what.
There is also a hidden charge for tea, which I sensed when I sat down because they were really pushy to get you to order tea ASAP.
The noodles I had were actually ok but I didn’t touch the rice because it was weird having rice with noodles and the rice was too hard to eat.
As for the vegetables, there was free newspaper clippings with it!
This is why I love Chinese food, there are so many fantastic unexpected surprises!
Anyway, they waived the tea charge for one person, which was so generous (NOT).
It is also interesting that on the menu, dessert is included but the staff don't tell you and when they finally do realize there is dessert, they said the red bean dessert is going to take time because it is not cooked yet.
Surely if dessert is on the menu, they should have it readily available because red bean dessert is a simple dessert that just needs to be kept warm in the saucepan.
