GRILLED CHEESE
2016-11-04  491 瀏覽
A while ago I came here for the Vietnamese baguette and they said there would be a cheese one coming soon.

It is finally out so I went there to try it.

Although they are famous for the Vietnamese baguette, the baguette they use is possibly the best in my opinion because it is crisp on the outside and fluffy in the middle.

So with decent cheese, it is a match made in heaven.

There are three sizes and I just realized the menu doesn't have English.

Mini, half and whole which costs $18, $29 and $55 respectively.

It is made with buffalo and cheddar cheese.
Anyway, it was so damn good! The baguette was perfectly crisp on the outside with deliciously tasty melted cheese in the middle.
My dreamy cheese baguette ended with a refreshing salted lime soda made with lime juice, salted lime and soda water.

As a bread lover I got the CHICKEN TIKKA MASALA FARMER BREAD AND GARLIC BREAD which is basically a big round loaf of bread filled with curry served with garlic bread.
Hong Konger's are not fond of bread and potatoes so its funny they give you garlic bread as well which doesn't quite go with it, perhaps a side of salad would be better.
The other funny thing was, there was a dollop of thick heavy yoghurt/sour cream.
When you're supposed to get it with jacket potatoes in HK, they give you bloody salad cream but anyway it was good with the bread.
The curry and bread was really good, but the curry was not TIKKA MASALA but Chinese curry.
The lobster soup tasted like lobster soup with onion soup added to it.

I was contemplating whether to go to Prawn noodle shop or here but in the end went here for some noodles because it was new.
The girl obviously didn't like her job and was taking it out on the customers.
If you don't like your job, you should quit.

Anyway, after I ordered the noodles, she asked me what drink I wanted but I didn't know it was included so asked what options there were.

She pointed to the list so I said I would order later (because I needed some time to look at it).

The funny thing was that she snatched the menu and placed it on another table.

Surely, they would have more than one menu for the whole restaurant.

OK. so here came my noodles.

They tasted ok but the noodles were rather chewy for Cambodian noodles and the soup was quite good with a big chunk of Chinese radish.

For drinks, I had the lime soda which was good, it was not sweetened with a good fizz.

I don't know why but Chungking express springs to mind, but since it was my first visit to ChungKing Mansions I decided to go there on Halloween.
As you know, I am fearless to go anywhere for food so finally checked it out and discovered the ground floor which was amazing.
When I got there, there were so many people touting you and trying to lead you to a different restaurant. I foresaw this situation so had a clear mind where I wanted to go and refused to listen to anyone because it was funny how they tried to twist the restaurant name and claim it was the one you wanted.
I liked this joint because it was blue and there was a clear menu.
The guy was friendly as well.
NOTE: On the ground floor, the prices are more reasonable and authentic. As for the upstairs I am still looking for some REAL recommendations from expats or natives.
I wanted the Murtabak and fish roti but this is only served on the weekends so I had the VADAI which is like a savoury fluffy donut served with delicious dips.
The vadai was nice and it was laced with black peppercorn pieces.
If you know where to go, it shouldn't be that expensive.
In the UK, if you go to West Croydon, there is a whole street of Asian food and I got three big naans for one pound!!!
Next time I want to try African food there but I have read some very discouraging posts online that they don't want you to be there.

Anyway, finally arrived at Khyber Pass Mess club where is was evidently popular with the Hong Kong crowd because the guy speaks Chinese, no expats that night.

We started with naan and curries.

The lamb curry came in lots of curry sauce which was great for dipping naan but it was a bit salty.

The vegetable curry was loaded with lots of vegetables including pineapple as well so it was a bit sweet.

The lime soda was a bit flat.

Went here because it stood out from the whole street!

Inside it was nice too with European chair rails and the ceiling was dreamy too with baubles and the crystal chandeliers.

For food, here was what we had:

I had the mushroom and ham omelette which was really good, inside there was lots of ham and mushrooms and the white sauce complemented it very well and I dipped the crispy slice of bread in the remaining sauce beacuse it was that good.

We also had pork chop with rice which came with lots of yummy gravy.

The pork chop was tender and lean.
The presentation of the rice was cute because it reminds me of those jelly bowls.

For drinks we had the fizzy lemon and pineapple ice.
The fizzy lemon was refreshing and it had a natrual lemon taste.

The pineapple ice was a bit weak because it was evidently sweetened water with chunks of pineapple and ice addded to it or perhaps this is how they serve it.

It is really difficult trying to order from this guy because his brain is wired in a different way I guess.

Anyway I got the veggie burger with rice, the whole thing was a bit dry but there were frozen vegetables which I don't really like.
