San Francisco sunshine at Lion Rock

A few weeks ago, found out that Lion Rock was going to launch this new BEAUTY BESTIE afternoon tea set in collaboration and inspired by Benefit Cosmetics which is available now to June 30, 2017, 15:00 – 18:00.
It costs HK$508 for two persons, HK$270 for one person and you get Benefit’s Make-up Goodies (valued at HK$229).
This tea set just clicked with me because Benefit Cosmetics is stylish and really appeals to me while the food items are inspired by American cuisine with a theme matching the cosmetics.
The tea set comes in a clear acrylic chest of drawers with cartooned Lombard Street (a famous winding street in San Francisco) as a background.

The drinks included are Rose Latte and Apple Eye.
I liked the Apple Eye which was a mix of apple juice, soda and rose syrup which complimented the savoury treats nicely while the Rose Latte goes well with the sweet treats.
Starting with the savoury treats in the middle drawer, there were American Lobster Rolls, Baked Mini Avocado and Crab Meat Pizza, Cajun Beef and Wild Mushroom Tortilla Roll, Deep-fried Buffalo Chicken Cubes on Bread Loaf and the Cheese Baked Smoked Salmon on Sweet Corn Cake.
Everything was a delight because you have all the American items there such as pizza, fried chicken, lobster rolls, tortilla rolls and Buffalo wings inspired fried chicken.
Nearly all of them were memorable especially the Cajun beef where they put thinly sliced prime beef in it and the Buffalo chicken which was tender and tasted like popcorn chicken.
On the top there was Creamy Shrimp and Clam Stew in Mini Herbs Bread Roll which is mimicking the New England style clam chowder bread bowl.
The mini clam stew was just too cute and damn delicious as well and it was surprising that I found so many clams in that tiny bun!!
Moving on the sweet items, there were raisin scones, a must have in tea sets which were crumbly and moist, along with Strawberry 3.6 Milk Puddings and girly cookies decorated with icing sugar.
Now to the last drawer which was also filled with goodies.
My favourite was the pink donut that was sprinkled with silver candy balls.
Then there was the Milk Chocolate Ganache Cake which was inspired by Benefits brow zings and gimme brow that is a delicious layer of soft chocolate made with Cacao Barry sandwiched between decorated milk chocolate.

Benefit's NEW GALifornia golden pink blusher is represented by the Grapefruit Vanilla Tart which will be changed to the dandelion twinkle version in May when this new blusher is launched!!
I found it refreshing and not too sweet.
Last but not least was the Raspberry Rose Yoghurt Mousse Cake which is in the shape of a toy car on top of a charcoal cookie representing Lombard Street!!!

Great buffet with steamed fish

Lobsters and oysters are now a standard item in Hong Kong buffets because it is the basic requirement that locals crave for.
+++++++++++++++++++++
For me, I have to have cheese, Indian curries and Western dishes.
++++
Cheese!!

The star of the show had to be the steamed fish!
There is always a huge steamed fish at most buffets but here they have a selection of fishes for you to pick which is steamed to order, so it means you have a whole fish to yourself.

My delicious steamed seabass which I had all to myself and it was fresh and silky.

The yellow mullet was also excellent.

A great fish has to be eaten with plain rice.

As an expat, I was so happy they had hummus, babaganosh, Harrisa and other Mediterranean dips with a good selection of bakery as these delicious items cost a bomb at HK supermarkets.
Dessert!!
The caramel mousse cake and pistachio mousse was addictive.

[Review 5865] Chinese Apple crumble @ 美心西餅 Maxim's Cake Shop

I was surprised to see that they had apple crumble and other new items.
Decided to get it anyway.
The buttery smell was a bit too overwhelming because the butter they use in HK smells strange.

I was impressed there was actually cubes of apple in cinnamon sauce at the bottom and not coconut tart filling.
It was quite nice but the sweeteners they use was too sweet and different to the ones you get in UK.

There is some white sauce in the middle as well.

This place is famous for dimsum and I come here for it regularly for it.
However, I didn't know they served dinners because I thought it was a club when it turns dark.

Went here for dinner because someone checked out the menu and said it was really affordable around $200 per person so tried it.
Started with the Chilled Cucumber in Garlic & Spring Onion Oil & Jelly Fish with Spicy Sauce which is the same item you can order in the dimsum session.
Then came the chili Pork Dumplings which were really spicy and you can also order these during the dimsum session.
Next we had the sun-dried Scallops & Bamboo Pith Soup which was thick with quality bamboo piths but it would be good if it wasn't so salty.
For mains, there was Sliced Spicy Beef in Szechuan- style which is really spicy but delicious.
The poached Chicken Flavored with Root Ginger was fantastic because the chicken was tender and succulent with a strong ginger taste infused in it.
Pregnant women's fried rice is a popular dish suited for pregnant women as some of the flavourings have been adjusted for health sake.

My favourite dish was the Stir-fried Sauteed Kale with Ginger Juice which tastes like cooked Savoy cabbage and the kale is softer when cooked..

Ordered the roasted eel because it looked big and it really was big.
It was really nice but the bones were a bit annoying.
The presentation was quite cute though as it looked like a huge sushi.

The hamachi don was good with chunky cubes of hamachi and the avocado and salmon roe was delicious with the rice but the bowl was too small so the salmon roe kept falling out.
I liked the spoon because it is more ergonomic that those Japanese ones but I wish it was bigger!

I was excited about the fish offal dish I ordered because offal normally means livers, hearts, lungs etc but the fish offal at this place was FISH ROE!! I love fish roe, this is the first item I eat if there is any from steamed fish! The second is fish cheeks and eyes.
Never would I have thought fish roe would be classified as fish offal but anyway it was bloody delicious because it was crispy on the outside and full of Sichuan spicy flavours.
They were generous as well with the fish roe.
It is similar to battered roe in British fish and chip shops but with more intense flavours.
The spicy beancurd sheets were very salty and spicy and the sheets were too big.

The gizzards were a bit too dark for my liking so it makes me wonder if they have too much toxins in them!!

[Review 5861] Lots of vegetarian choices @ 粥世家

https://www.openrice.com/zh/hongkong/review/lots-of-vegetarian-choices-e2753359
I was captivated here because there were so many vegetarian choices from veggie congees to veggie ricerolls.
Ordered the courgette congee and the spring onion ricerolls.
I wanted to ordered the vegetable congee but they said it was choisum and somehow it doesn't match and I can imagine them plonking a whole choisum with the long stalk in the congee!!!
It would be great if it was lettuce.
Anyway, the congee was really disappointing because you couldn't taste any rice flavour to it, the taste was just creamy and the courgettes were just thrown in.
The ricerolls were horrible but perhaps HK style.
Before I put any sauces they just tasted damn sweet, I can imagine it not going well for people with diabetes!
Anyway, definitely nothing like the Chinese rice rolls in the UK which are not sweet by default.
The staff were in a hurry to get your order as well~
