The BBQ to represent HK

Ever since they opened their first flagshop at Li Yuen Street, I knew it was going to be a success because it is a breakthrough from tradition.Firstly, the packaging is presentable and you don't see gloveless grubby fat chefs with greasy hands and soiled white aprons chopping roast meat and shoving it in those white polystyrene boxes which give off an odour and then getting your hand oily by opening those boxes.

You can now find this joint easily near HK Airport Express where can even buy freshly vacuum sealed Charsiu to take abroad or even try it at The Peak.
Just like Eggtarts, Charsiu is a must try but sadly people who do not eat pork can't try but at GOOD BBQ, they do have LAMB charsiu!~!

After seeing all these posts on the new branch of Good BBQ, I decided to visit the new branch at Hysan Place because they have noodles and this new sizzling plate exclusive to this branch.
Initially, I thought the menu was stuck to the blue wall, but they are attached by a magnetic sheet so it allows people to just pull it down and show the staff what they want.
As the noodles and sizzling plate are exclusive, I decided them try them
There are two noodles and soups to choose from. Knifecut ramen or Silky Rice noodles with Szechuan charcoal soup or prawn and pork bone soup.
I had the 011 which was the Lamb Charsiu with Szechuan soup noodles.

Coming from a BBQ shop, the noodle was seriously good, in terms of broth, it was strong and full of szechuan flavours without any pork or msg in the soup.
While I was eating this, people thought I got it from a ramen shop as they tried to find the stall for it.
The lamb charsiu was just like pork in terms of taste and texture but you could taste a hint of lamb if you really tasted it.

My friend who had the Prawn and Pork soup said it was really concentrated with a strong prawn taste that has been reduced and reduced through boiling.

The sizzling plate was a new experience and it was like eating pot rice because you get charred rice at the bottom when you mix it together.
The charsiu I had was really moist and tender and this was just the normal one so I am definitely having this again.

Star Street is never gloomy with Sun Curry

Discovered this new curry joint on Star Street when I was going to Maison ES recently.
The curry joint stood out because of the hippy style flowery SUN logo and the bright LED star.
Finally went there during Easter.
On the menu, there is a simple choice of chicken, beef and lamb curry which is paired with rice, noodle, vermicelli, flat rice noodle and udon.
They also specialize in Beef Brisket too, there is ordinary beef brisket and the Superb Beef brisket which is in limited supply each day.
I was really chuffed to see Lemon Chicken, Curry fishballs and Fried Ice Cream on the menu.
It really felt like going to my local Chinese Takeaway in UK because curry and lemon chicken are popular picks.
Tried the Lemon Chicken and Beef Curry.
At first, I thought the curry tasted like Japanese curry but then it tasted like Pakistani curry which is very spicy.
Also tried a bit of the Superb beef brisket which was very soft and that beef broth it was in was amazing so I would recommend their beef brisket noodles as well.
0 讚好
The lemon chicken in appetizing lemon sauce was comforting and healthier because it was pan fried and not the deep fried version.
I really enjoyed my curry fix so I will be back for the fried ice cream and I secretly wish that fried apple / banana is going to be on the menu and sweet and sour chicken too!!!
As you can imagine, this joint is very popular with residents and people working nearby.

Pinot duck has been serving duck dishes since 2015 in Stanley before the recent duck trend with places like MC DXXK, Forbxden Duck, etc.
With Charlies Restaurant in WC gone (my favourite Chinatown British style Peking Duck), Pinot Duck is one of the good ducks to replace it I suppose.
They serve almost anything ranging from Peking Duck to Modern duck dishes such as Crispy duck wings, duck lollipops, duck liver pate to duck risotto.

I was overwhelmed to learn that a second branch had just opened in Wanchai because Stanley is a bit of a trek and more people can finally try it.
With its new location in Wanchai, the place where everything happens, it is now time to for it to shine and the menu is bigger and better with more duck dishes than ever.
Next stop Michelin???

As I have already dined twice at the Stanley branch, I decided to try the new dishes but the one dish I had to order again was the Crispy Duck wings!!!!
Here was what I had:
*****
Crispy Duck Wings tossed in Sichuan pepper and cumin seasoning:
This is probably the only restaurant in HK that serves meaty and divine duck wings.
They are extremely crispy and tasty especially with the unique Sichuan pepper and cumin seasoning.
0 讚好
*****
Xi'an Lamb Skewers:
This was a non duck dish but it was amazing because the chunks of lamb were juicy and tender and the yoghurt wasabi sauce was fantastic as I never expected yoghurt and wasabi could taste that good together.
0 讚好
*****
Classic Peking Duck:
As well as Hoi Sin sauce, they also serve it with black pepper sauce, crispy garlic and minced garlic which makes sense because lots of duck dishes are served with black pepper sauce so you can have fun and experiment on the sauces.
Personally, I liked having my pancakes with hoisin sauce and cucumber and the pancakes were very satisfying because the texture was elastic and springy and holds everything together well.
*****
Pan Fried Duck with Sichuan Spices and Lychee hawthorn:
I ordered this because the Sichuan Spices and Lychee hawthorn was an interesting combination.
When it came, it was duck breast slices topped with lychee and hawthorn.
The taste was like sweet and sour with a twist of fragrant Sichuan pepper and sweet lychee contrasted by the tartness of the Hawthorn berries!
Personally, I found this dish really good with plain rice.
*****
Duck Fried Rice:
The duck fried rice was well executed with juicy pieces of pineapple and finely chopped spring onion.
It had a prominent charred aroma (wok hei) to it and they use Vietnamese Rice which is soft and fragrant.
1 讚好
*****
For desserts I went for the two new items, the Rolling Donkey and the Golden Almond Fingers.
Rolling Donkey:
The presentation of this was a surprise, it was glutinous rice mochi pieces covered in coconut shreds and crushed peanuts inside a black and white chocolate shell which you break.
Eating the mochi pieces and chocolate pieces were so good together because you get the sweetness from the chocolate which isn't too sweet and the coconut shreds reminded me of the Bounty Chocolate bar.
*****
Golden Almond Fingers:
This was a playful twist from fried milk replaced with almond milk. Inside the golden crispy batter was this silky sweet almond pudding filling.
It would be great if there was some sort of punchy sauce on the side or partially drizzled on top like Passionfruit or Cherry to complement it.
*****
I plan to try this again during lunch too see how their lunch menu fares and hopefully go here again with friends in the near future!!!!!

Food Lab has been around for a while, they used to be on Caine Road and at Fanling but Fanling was too far so I never made it.Finally tried this place over Easter when I made a trip to see the golden egg at Science Park.
Went here for dinner after taking a stroll on the promenade.
As a tea lover, I had the Earl Grey and the green tea.
They serve organic teas by Natures cuppa.
My friend had the cola.
Started with the beef consomme with ravioli and the vegetable soup with chickpeas.
The consomme was light with a strong unami taste while the vegetable soup was tangy and rich.
The Spicy Quesadilla was a surprise because it turned out to be curry and cheese filling which is quite different to the usual fillings like chili beef.
The curry flavouring and cheese were both quite light so the two went quite well together.
For the mains, had the pan fried Dover Sole which is one of my favourite fishes but they are rarely served in Hong Kong.
I love this fish which is found everywhere in the UK.
Although it came with a delicious lime mayonnaise, I just had it with some salt which was fantastic.
Finished the meal with some great desserts!!!
The pancake with fresh strawberries and whipped cream was sensational because it wasn't too sweet and the fresh cream was silky and delicious.
The apple poached in white wine was really comforting and healthy presented in a really nice way so I was really glad I ordered it as you rarely find whole poached apples!!
Also tried the lychee vinegar that was recommended to us, it had a soothing aftertaste.
As well as lychee vinegar, they also sell a good variety of wines like tomato aperitifs and strawberry cream.
I can't wait to try this place again if I am in the area because the brunch menu and weekend menu looks fab.

Decided to visit the golden egg over Easter so went here for lunch before taking a stroll on the promenade. We didn't order much otherwise it would defeat the purpose of the healthy stroll afterwards.
The menu was quite confusing because for the dimsum, it doesn't have the price as the prices were on a separate sheet!
Tea is $12 and not $15 because the Eng and Chi version are inconsistent.
Anyway for food, we shared the fried noodles with bittermelon and angus beef, beancurd with black truffle and the layered custard sponge.
The fried noodles were quite good but the bittermelon was a bit under cooked for my liking.
The steamed beancurd was a bit tasteless as it was just steamed beancurd topped with black truffle paste.
Perhaps oyster/abalone sauce might have been better than plonking truffle on top.
The layered custard sponge was really good, it was light and fluffy with even layers of custard which was not too sweet.

When the East truly meets the West

Although the Kowloon side is not geographically the East side of Hong Kong and the HK side is not the West side of HK but for food is it quite different. On the Kowloon side, you get more Chinese restaurants and their palates are slightly different but the food scene is revolving again.
Due to high rents and stuff, we are seeing more Western restaurants popping up in Kwuntong, Kowloon Bay, Laichikok etc to cater for expat companies migrating from the HK side because of the rents.
Anyway, TST is almost the central point where people on both sides can meet up and the new menu at O delice is just the thing to break the ice.
I found my comfort food on the menu because how can they not serve their signature galettes!
I had the spinach and salmon which just brought me back to Wanchai!!
It was loaded with spinach and salmon and I loved the baby gem lettuce salad.

Next was my favourite moule frites which are freshly flown from France.
They were flavourful and springy.
The best thing is that they serve it with aioli mayonnaise, but I asked for plain mayonnaise which is even better!!
New on the menu was the French toast which I thought was funny but this is a real deal from a French place of course and not those lame Cantonese style French toasts suffocating in syrup and melting butter/margerine!
The French one, pain perdu is much lighter and comforting, one that I could eat again and again!!
Finished off with the strawberry basil tea which was flawless and hand shaken by my favourite guy at odelice!!!
He concocted it in a way, you could taste fresh strawberries and it was perfectly balanced that it didn't taste syrupy.
Odelice!

Previously tried Kakigori in Central which costed a bomb but it was good.
Here you can get the basic one for $38 which comes with red beans etc.
The taste was slightly different because shaved ice tasted milky as they mixed it with milk and they said the water they used was from Japan.
The shaved ice was sweet without adding the brown sugar syrup so I didn't really need to use it.
Finished with a hot Japanese tea which was comforting.
