Modern Laksa joint

It is so tragic that the legendary Katong of Wanchai has closed down as well as their other branch in SW.
Laksa Playground is here but it is not the same as they serve Malaysian style laksa.
On the menu, you can choose the Malaysian Laksa broth or the Curry Laksa broth.
So obviously, the curry laksa has curry flavour in it. but I wish the staff could explain how different the two broths were.
I knew I had asked the wrong person because I got the answer that I deduced myself.
Anyway, the laksa was garnished with spring onions which turned out really strong and over powered the laksa and the vermicell in the soup was local stuff.

Random Birthday Cake

As I was looking for a birthday cake, stumbled upon this one and got a strawberry cake.
From the outside, it appeared to be a strawberry cake possibly filled with fruit.
The moment of truth came when the birthday person sliced it.
It was really smart how they used the angel chiffon cake (the one with a hole in the middle) and smothered it with cream and stuffed the center with strawberries.
The top strawberries were fresh ones and the chopped strawberries in the middle were sweetened to balance the fresh ones.
Overall, the presentation of the cake was nice and cake had a very eggy taste.
The cream was a bit hongkie style for my liking.

Arrived at EG and initially sat outside because it was packed inside.
Luckily the staff found us a seat inside because it was friggin hot outside and the staff there were really nice.
Anyway, I got the fish katsu sandwich which was really delicious but as I was clumsy the bits of cabbage kept falling out.
It was smothered with my favourite kewpie mayo and there were lots of cabbage in it.
For drinks, I got the strawberry iced tea which was such a good drink because they used strawberry puree which tastes so much better than syrup.

As well as Wheatfield Kitchen, you will also find Wheatfield X Borsch & Noodles in Hong Kong.
Wheatfield X Borsch & Noodles solely serves noodles in their signature Borsch soup while Wheatfield Kitchen serves Shanghai style Russian Fare.
I am glad I did not try Wheatfield X Borsch & Noodles as this one serves a finer range of dishes.

If you are looking for more Russian style dishes, there are more options in the appetizer section.
For soups, it was really difficult choosing a choice as they had borsch, beetroot borsch and mikli soup.
Borsch, you can pretty much imagine it being similar to Czarina Restaurant 莎厘娜餐廳 (Now Closed).
I didn't choose the Beetroot borsch with sourcream as I have already tried it at DACHA which is Ukrainian in Central, however I did find some similarities at Dacha with Chinese food.
In the end I had the Mikli soup which tasted exactly like Borsch but rather acidic.
Next were the blinis with salmon roe caviar, a must order as you can't get more Russian than this!
Each morsel was heaven.
Next I had the chicken kiev which is a popular Russian dish and so popular that you can find ready made ones in the freezers of UK supermarkets where you just bake them.
A chicken kiev is basically made of pounded and rolled chicken filets filled with butter, then coated with breadcrumbs which is then either baked or fried.
Modern Kievs are filled with garlic butter and other fancy ingredients like bacon.
The one here was made of minced chicken meat, possibly thigh meats as Hong Kongers just don't appreciate white meat.
By using minced meat, it is a good way of throwing this and that in.
The Chicken Kiev was ok but a little different from the UK ones!
For the mains, it was again hard deciding as most were ShangRus style especially the pasta which I really wanted to choose but it had black pepper, the thing HKers strangely love.
Anyway, chose the beef stroganoff which again is adapted to the HK taste without sour cream served with rice.
Overall, I am glad I visited as there is now another choice for ShangRus fare since Czarina closed down, although there is Ivan The Kozak which I still haven't tried but presumably also SR style as I was greeted by some cantonese possibly owners.

Due to the rain, ran in here for lunch.
For burgers, there were lots of choices but I picked the one with blue cheese and bacon.
The blue cheese was nice and strong but it was more like a sauce while the piece of bacon was big and satisfying.
The beef patty was a little smaller than I anticipated because I got the wrong impression from the restaurant name.
For the other choice I had the chicken and avocado burrito which tasted like it had been baked too long or microwaved as it was practically crunchy and the chicken was a bit hard and dry.

Other than that, it was all good.

Went here for the Earl Grey Mint Lemonade Frozen Tea with aloe.
It was cooling and a refreshing drink to have on a hot day because you get slush on top.
The only thing was that I could not taste the Earl Grey and it tasted like white grapes which was strange so the taste wasn't as palatable as their other drinks.

There is something different about this cha chaan teng, perhaps the decor or perhaps the location.
Over the past ten years on this stretch of the road, it has never changed a single bit.
Ada has always been on the corner, this chiuchow restaurant a couple of doors away and the rest are clubs!
Things are finally changing as this restaurant and a snacks joint pops up bringing more people to this stretch of the road.
Normally people will briskly walk on this side of the road if they are not going into the clubs!
Before you reach this restaurant, you still have to go past some dragon ladies who are now experiencing more people going past than ever if they are not heading for them!
Anyway, the front of this restaurant is rather different and I don't know why it reminds me of a snooker club.
They sell interesting items such as cookies and other modern dishes which is very similar to Moon Moon Cha Chan Teng on Thompson Road.
There are so many things I want to try because they have Western cakes as well but sadly they do not have Earl Grey tea to go with it like Moon Moon does.
I was attracted by the Buffalo bun thinking it would have buffalo sauce.
Well, the sauce was different from my naively hopeful imagination, it tasted like the Chinese style tomato sauce that is served with raw oysters and it also tasted like pasta tomato sauce.
The beef on the other hand was good quality lean tender beef but the butter and sauce together was a little strange and overwhelming for my liking.
