Healthy Chinese food

Not fan of Chinese food but I actually liked this place because the food was not overpriced and it was healthy.
The tomato, beef and egg was really good even though there was not much egg in it but I ordered it because of the tomato sauce.
On another time, had the taro with fish fillets, the taro was not soft enough but they didn't really use MSG which was appreciated.
Sadly, I don't think I will be here in the near future as the location is just off the radar.

Went to Wine and Dine 2018 which is bigger and better that there are four sections.
The drunken pot was there and they had this trio bowl with all my three favourites: blood jelly, stinky tofu and fish maw.
They were all tasty but a bit to spicy as they have been simmering in the pot for quite a long time.
Also tried the barley drink which was quite sweet so it help sooth the spiciness.

[Review 6996] Great cafe but food was disappointing @ Living Art Cafe

Living Art Cafe (裝修中)
西環西營盤高街31號地下低層
G/F, 31 High Street, Sai Ying Pun, Western District
https://www.openrice.com/zh/hongkong/review/great-cafe-but-food-was-disappointing-e3226083
Living Art Cafe was one of the filming scenes for Blue Veins so if you have been watching it you would definitely recognise it.
I haven't really made an effort to try as the menu is rather boring but it is a good place to spend your afternoon if you are looking for a non busy quiet place to chat.
The cake which was supposed to be a red velvet was not, it was strawberry mousse with layers of red velvet cake and the strawberry mousse tasted exactly like those artificial strawberry milkshakes but in mousse form.
The cake layers were soggy.
The salmon croissant was burnt and crunchy all the way through.
The salmon made it worse as it had gone off hence it was rather fishy.
It would have made more sense to just order the cheese and tomato croissant if I knew it was going to be like that.
The only thing that saved the day was the mao jan tea which was strong and had a nice grassy taste.

[Review 6995] Quirky Restaurant @ Mamaday
25/11/2018
Mamaday
銅鑼灣霎西街28號必發大廈1樓
1/F, Perfect Commercial Building, 28 Sharp Street West, Causeway Bay
https://www.openrice.com/zh/hongkong/review/quirky-restaurant-e3226024
This restaurant is called Mamaday as in the phonics for mamaday and not related to Mama.
In Chinese, MAMADAY means average or so so.
When I got there, I was really delighted at their decor and the menu was entertaining.
There is not a boring spot at the restaurant.
The a la carte was creative and one of the items in Chinese says "Grandma skin"!!
It is quite interesting that they give you some black pepper edamame to start with.
As it was lunchtime, I decided to go for the lunch menu as it might be quicker.
I had the XO Sauce Egg noodles with Tiger Prawns.
I was quick with taking a picture as I was hungry but the noodles were cold all the way through and in the centre so I assumed they were chilled noodles.
The XO sauce was a bit disappointing as it just tasted like Thai Sweet garlic sauce and the noodles were cloyingly sweet with a powerfully strong taste.
Not advised for lunch as you are left with an embarrassing garlic breath the whole day.
Finished with the red tea which was a surprise as it turned out to be Earl Grey.
Although the noodles were not as expected, I think I should give the a la carte another chance as it is more captivating with things like squid ink prawn roe noodles and purple risotto.

[Review 6994] Since 1978 @ 北京樓 Peking Garden Restaurant
23/11/2018
北京樓 Peking Garden Restaurant
尖沙咀梳士巴利道3號星光行3樓
3/F,Star House, 3 Salisbury Road, Tsim Sha Tsui
https://www.openrice.com/zh/hongkong/review/since-1978-e3225707
To be honest, I haven't heard of Peking Garden until recently but apparently this restaurant has been around since 1978.
The TST branch was reopened recently according to Maxim's website.
Anyway, went there with relatives and expats as they had decent food to accommodate both palates which are both very different.
As I went here twice, this was the second visit.
At the entrance, there is an open kitchen where you can see the Peking duck being prepared behind the glass windows.
Started with Sauteed prawn, scallop and sea whelk in chili sauce.
It was surrounded in mash and the seafood was tasty with a fiery sweet kick.
Next was the deep fried Mandarin fish in sweet and sour sauce,.
The sweet and sour sauce was just right and the fish was silky.
Peking Duck:
Again, had this on both visits and it was consistently good.
The pancakes are slightly bigger than the average ones so it helps to keep it altogether nicely.
The Braised pork belly was rich in gravy and the pork belly had a perfect meat to fat ratio layering.
Sauteed lettuce root with red cabbage, lotus root and carrot:
Tried this dish on both visits as we had someone who was vegetarian so this was something that she could eat.
Next was the Beggar's chicken which is quite a dramatic dish!
First it is set alight, then you hammer it with the golden hammer to break the casing, then you get to eat the silky tender chicken which has a lovely lotus leaf aroma.
The person who breaks the casing gets to keep a mini golden hammer as a souvenir.
Peking fried noodles with shredded pork:
For carbs had the noodles which were firm and al dente.
There is a noodle demo every evening at the restaurant so you can see how they hand pull the noodles.
For dessert, I was surprised at the choice and creativity.
I am not fond of Chinese desserts but these were good.
The Deep fried glutinous puffs with water chestnut had a good waterchestnut flavour as well as custard.
The Baked mashed apple pastry were pleasing as they had a modern appearance and inside there was apple in it!
Last but not least they had caramel bananas which is a Chinatown thing!!!
It was encased in this crispy batter coated in caramelized sugar.
As well as banana, you can also get apple in China Town.
Definitely the place to go with tourists and friends from overseas as the menu has English and dishes they can relate to.

[Review 6993] Satisfying sweet potato @ BEAT Bakery

Shop 8, Tsim Sha Tsui MTR Station, Tsim Sha Tsui
https://www.openrice.com/zh/hongkong/review/satisfying-sweet-potato-e3225700
Discovered BEAT as I was in TST.
Noticed this shop because of the music Clef note with a B incorporated in the logo, when I got closer I found out it was a modern bakery by Tsui Wah but the style is totally different from the bakery counters at TW restaurants because they are not selling the usual Pineapple buns etc.
Tsui Wah has been getting more of my attention recently with their healthy options such as okra scrambled egg and the use of quinoa in its dishes.
BEAT was really captivating because they had colourful bakery made with natrual colourings like blueberries, squid ink and cranberries etc.
I was told that they do not use softening agents in their breads which makes them healthier.
As well as bakery, they have energetic detox waters and detox fruit teas crammed with fruit to boost your mood.
I got the purple potato bun which was really colourful with mashed purple potato as well as a half a sweet potato in the middle.
The star of the show had to be the sweet potato in the middle which was sweet ad silky.

Came here a while ago during Halloween and had the chips which were comforting because they were fried just right and I got extra gravy to go with it.
I am not a drinker but recently discovered the Brother's ale which is damn good as it is super sweet and doesn't have an alcoholic taste.
I didn't drink much but at least I was willing to order it and great for sharing.
There are so many ciders at Trafalgar!!!!
