Fish and Chips
2019-02-03 138 瀏覽
Went here a while ago for fish and chips and quite a lot has changed.
There are more options on the menu.
The fish and chips looked more or less the same as how I had them Tai Koo but they didn't have vinegar available like before.
The chips were basically the oven chips which are still crispy so it was good.
Finished with hot chocolate which had a rich cocoa taste served with a Christmas Tree shaped shortbread.

There are quite a few branches of Prince of Shaomai but they are plotted all over inconvenient locations such as Kai Tin, chuk Yuen etc.Went to the joint at Lam Tin because it was accessible by MTR.
Lam Tin Market has been revamped with these funny red English phone booths.
Unfortunately, they didn't have the squid ink shao mai which was obviously what I went there for.
As I was already bloody there, just got the ordinary Fish Shaomai which are freshly made.\
The shaomai skin tasted quite nice with a springy texture.
They tasted better when they have cooled down as the texture is more chewy so it depends what texture you prefer and you can taste the fishiness when they are cooler.
Definitely want to come back for the squid ink shaomai but as the franchise is small, they don't even have a dumb number or fb for ppl to find out.

Chinese Festive Dishes

Originally intended to go to Shanghai Lao Lao at Lokfu but it was closed so went here as it was the nearest branch. They had some attractive festive dishes so decided to try them all.
They were very affordable so we shared this between the four of us.
The pumpkin soup was loaded with chicken, prawns, quail egg, egg dumplings, sea cucumber etc.
My favourite was the poached fish with pickled vegetables which went deliciously with rice.
Just for the instaworthy factor, we had the shanghai dumplings which were pink in colour.
There was a scallop inside each dumpling.
I was already full but there was glutinous rice dessert laced with osmantus flowers and sweet sauce.
Overall I was quite stuffed and it didn't cost us a bomb!

CNY is coming and there are so many Festive treats in the market.Traditional turnip pudding is getting boring so it is time for more modern ingredients and vegetarian puddings.
This year Kee Wah has a vegetarian pudding with cordeceps and cashew nuts which makes it nutritious and healthy.
I loved the soft cashews in it and the crunchy cordeceps.
As well as turnip cake, they have other sweet treats in cute cartoon theme tins.

Popping Candy and Peking Duck?
2019-02-01 126 瀏覽
I have always wanted to try this restaurant since it opened.
It is located in the same area as Hexa and Fu Rong which also serves Chinese fare but Xihe serves Peking Duck and other Chinese dishes with a beautiful view.
The menu at Xihe is rather interesting because it is very traditional or the dishes are rather wildly created for example the hot and sour soup with a puff pastry top and the fish maw soup which you would expect done in a Chinese way but it was made into pumpkin soup.
To begin, started with two soups.
The sweetcorn with fish gas bladder was loaded with spongy pieces of the fish gas bladder and sweetcorn.
The golden pumpkin fish maw soup tasted much better than anticipated because the soup was nice and savory and the piece of fish maw was actually quite big.
Most importantly is was soft and not fishy.
For the appetizers, we had the ducks feet in mustard sauce which is quite similar to the one served at Ar Hungs delicacy where they used chicken feet.
The taste was similar with a slight bitterness but the duck feet had a better bite and crunch to it.
The pork rolls were instaworthy but unfortunately they were a little oily to the extent you could smell the oil before you put it in your mouth.
Next was the dan dan noodles which were very fiery despite the soup being rather thin and the noodles were very soft.
For the vegetables, had the Julienne celtuce roots in salted egg and preserved egg broth.
Normally spinach is used instead of celtuce but celtuce has a nice crunch but it would be good if they were sliced thinner as they were too chunky.
I reckon Zucchini was used. it would also taste just as good as celtuce.
Then it was the star of the show!! Peking Duck which can be eaten in three different ways!
There is a sachet of popping candy to go with the crispy duck skin.
In the condiments box, on one side you have the traditional sauces and on the other side you have modern sauces like blueberry jam, mustard and hawthorn jelly.
At some restaurants they serve sugar with crispy duck skin so popping candy takes it to the next level as the sizzling feeling distracts you from the fattiness of the duck skin.
The blueberry jam went surprisingly well with the duck so I really enjoyed it whether eating it the traditional or modern way.
Finished with the almond pudding but I couldn't taste any cinnamon according to the menu.
Overall, I quite enjoyed the meal so might come back with friends.

I was lured in by the girly decor and discovered they had froyo and a DIY counter for toppings.
There were four flavours and Hazelnut was a flavour that I liked so I decided to try it.
It costs HKD18 per 100g and their scales are quite sensitive because weighed it before adding some sauce and weighed it after and it was quite different.
I only put a drop of caramel sauce because I was just curious, the hazelnut froyo was quite nice with a hazelnut flavour but it wasn't nutty.
The mochi bits were quite chewy though.
After the froyo I was a bit thirsty so got the Jasmine tea to finish which was nice and aromatic.

Discovered this joint after eating at Sushi Man nearby.
They specialize in fish maw noodles and soups.
I went during lunch because they serve lunch sets.
For drinks had the roselle tea and Chrysanthanem tea.
The roselle was refreshing.
For the noodles, had beef and chicken were they both have fish maw in it.
On appearance the beef looked better but then the chicken was tastier because it was tender and marinated.
The noodles were flat and al dente but didn't really absorb the broth.
Although the noodles didn't hang the soup well, the soup was msg free and it was loaded with dried longan berries and red dates which made it nourishing.
Will definitely be back on a cold day for these noodles.
