Kitchen Bros @ Kwun Tong

I don't even bother with Kwun Tong but that day a friend was collecting their renewed HKID and this joint was located in the same building so decided to go and check it out.
It is a trek from the MTR station but definitely worth checking out because the kiosk is cute and colourful.
There is a self service which is also manned by humans just in case you need that human touch.
Anyway, I was really excited about this place because according to their FB menu, they offer many Western dishes using Chinese ingredients such as the bolognese rice rolls, carbonara silver needle noodles etc.
There are lots of turkey options as well which is good for people on a protein diet.
As I had already had lunch that day, I got the pandan tart and the soup.
It was the best pandan tart I have ever had, each bite was decadent with a lovely pandan aroma made more intense with the roasted coconut shreds on top.
I liked the way all the soups are vacuumed packed which means they keep longer.
All you do is rip the bag opened and pour it in the cup.
The octopus soup was inspired by the Chinese jeungyuetong.
It was creamy which turned out quite nice.
Will check out the WC branch as that one has a dine in area.

[Review 7629] A tasty Piedmont food journey at Castellana @ Castellana Restaurant
30/07/2019
Castellana Restaurant
銅鑼灣開平道1號Cubus 10樓
10/F, Cubus, 1 Hoi Ping Road, Causeway Bay
https://www.openrice.com/zh/hongkong/review/a-tasty-piedmont-food-journey-at-castellana-e3494463
Castellana Restaurant is no ordinary Italian cuisine because they specialize in dishes from Piedmont in Italy.
Piedmont cuisine is so different to your usual Italian fare like pizza because of its location and climate.
You won't find olives growing well there hence root vegetables are used and you will find risotto cooked with butter instead of olive oil.
I had the 7 course set which meant I could try more variety and all the courses on the menu were worth trying.
Started with their house made crusty bread:
^^^^^^^^^^
Roasted Pepper with Parmesan Cheese:
This was a nice appetizer to tease the palate.
^^^^^^^^^^
Smoked lake trout:
The first course started well with the smoked lake trout which I found it comforting because I always have that in UK and it is rarely served in Hong Kong unless some restaurant imports it.
The trout was not overly smokey complemented well by the berry gels on top.
^^^^^^^^^^
Fassona beef broth and vegetables:
Next was the soup which was warm soup with beef tartare on the spoon.
The tartare was the finest I have ever had, you begin with the beef tartare, then the soup and finish with the pickles.
I loved it the way the tartare was not over seasoned so that you could taste the beef and the warm soup adjusts your palate with savouryness and then the pickles get you ready for the next course.
^^^^^^^^^^
Risotto with black garlic and river prawns:
As mentioned earlier, many dishes use butter instead like this one so the risotto was very rich but the black garlic was a good element in mellowing out the butter with its sweetness.
^^^^^^^^^^
Carbonara Au Koque:
Homemade taglioni and Vigezzo valley cured ham.
This was no ordinary Carbonara, I loved the way the sauce was poured on when it was served.
The best thing was the cured ham on top which was crispy and thin.
Every mouthful was sinfully delicious with creamy strands of pasta and the saltiness from the cured ham crisps.
^^^^^^^^^^
Corregone Lake fish glazed with black cherry:
Again, this another dreamy moment, delicate fish in an aromatic sweet black cherry sauce.
On the side was rainbow chards which I haven't had in ages, again another vegetable that I always take for granted in UK.
On top there were fresh blackberries and raspberries.
^^^^^^^^^^
Fassona beef:
The last main dish before dessert was the beef which was soft and supple in a bed of silkilicious mash with crumbs.
It was definitely a satisfying main before dessert.
^^^^^^^^^^
Tiramisu:
Dessert was a playful twist of the past, present and future in the form of Tiramisu.
My favourite was the middle one which was sweet and creamy, while the chocolate bonbon had a bitter twist.
There was more to come with hazelnuts and truffle chocolate which was a perfect ending.
I would definitely recommend this place as every course is a surprise and it is helmed by Marco Sacco.

Korean rolls in LCK

I was in the area so discovered this Korean joint.
It was the weekend so it was nice and empty as most of the office crowd have fled so the restaurant was quiet except for some residents who were getting takeaways.
The menu is mainly rolls or you can get the set.
I ordered just the rolls because the rest wasn't interesting and if it wasn't for spam I wouldn't have bothered.
I wonder if I was the first customer that day according to the receipt.
Anyway, the rolls were big in diameter so having a small mouth they were difficult to eat.
They were filled with pickles etc which were stated on the menu.
The spam was good but the rest of the ingredients were a bit sweet.
Overall quite nice but probably nicer if it was just spam inside like School Food.

[Review 7627] 8oz rib eye for HKD88 @ La Vigne

https://www.openrice.com/zh/hongkong/review/8oz-rib-eye-for-hkd88-e3492839
Although Tai Kok Tsui is a bit off the radar, there are lots of interesting things to try.
I was in the area obviously for dessert so was going to go to PRESS ENTER for lunch but it turns out that it is now La Vigne so went in anyway.
Lunches are around HKD68 -88 including a drink.
The decor is much the same.
Friend had the steak which was big and took up most of the plate.
It was covered with black pepper sauce.
Definitely a good portion size and value for HKD88.
As I love dill, I ordered the salmon and dill pasta with tea.
It was nice how they presented the sugar in a test tube.
The pasta was al dente and each strand was evenly flavoured.
It would be good if the dill was stronger but it was good enough and the chunks of salmon were tender and tasty.
Will be coming back to Taikoktsui again for more food.

Plant Based dishes for less than HKD50 at Tsui Wah

Tsui Wah is a famous restaurant that serves Hong Kong style dishes.
I was really excited to find out that Tsui Wah Restaurants are serving omnipork which is the current trend for plant based alternatives.
In general, the prices at Tsui Wah can be pricier than similar restaurants so I was elated that their plant based dishes were under HKD50!!
On the plant based menu, they have the classic Baked Omnipork Bolognese Spaghetti for HKD49 and the local Hong Kong favourite, Omnipork Bolognese sauce with Fried egg over rice for just HKD45.
If you want it totally vegan, you can request for it without egg and cheese which they are happy to accommodate.
As well as main dishes, you can also get your vegetable fix with chilled okra complimented by wasabi soy sauce.
+++++++++
Omnipork Bolognese sauce with Fried egg over rice:
I am so glad this is now on the menu because I loved it, bolognese and rice is simply delicious together and more nutritious with egg if you can eat it.
+++++++++
Baked Omnipork Bolognese Spaghetti:
For pasta lovers, this is another good option, again you can request it without cheese.
+++++++++
I will definitely be coming back for the Omnipork Bolognese sauce with Fried egg over rice because it is just comforting and filling.
For those who are new to omnipork, it is cholesterol free, lower in calories and unsaturated fats.

I was walking past after trying Kitchen Bros and this joint caught my eye as it was a coffee yet they had Chinese drinks like Barley Water and Longnan.
Initially I was tempted to try them but they said it was sweetened so I had the tea instead.
Normally I would pick Earl Grey but as I don't know what brand they use so chose English Breakfast instead.
In the end it turned out to be Twinnings.
Overall tea was just tea but not a good environment for a drink because I might as well drink tea next to a bunch of faggots smoking.
