[Review 26] Not bad!! @ 金寶美食店

Date reviewed on openrice: 09/03/2006

Today out of the blue, my friends and I decided to give this place a try.

So my friend ordered a fried rice, and I ordered a Cart noodle.
The presentation of the fried rice, was quite nice, they included chopped up fine spring onion in it, which gives it a nice flavour, unlike other restaurants where they seem to throw in odd bits of chunky spring onion which you probably wouldn't eat.

As for my Car noodle, the noodles gave me a surprise, since the flavour of the soup was blended it. In other places, the noodles are usually tasteless. The soup base tasted just right too, not too artificial and not too much MSG.

On their set menu that day was chicken drumstick curry. I was going to order that, but I decided to try the Car noodle. But while I was there I saw that dish served. Although I did not taste it, I believe it would have been delicious.

The presentation of that was also top quality, a plate of rice, evenly covered in curry sauce and its contents. On top of that were two pieces of fried chicken just like KFC, a chicken leg and a chicken thigh. I would say a bonus because the thigh was also included since on the menu it said chicken drumstick. All that for $22!!! So next time I will order that!!
I will be back!!!

[Review 25] Not much variety @ sweet dot (by 後現代)

Date reviewed on openrice: 26/02/2006

Today I decided to try this place to satisfy my hunger for the afternoon.

On the menu outside, I saw this ramen with grilled aubergines and chicken drumstick, so I went in and sat down.

When I ordered, the waitress said that the chicken drum had been changed to chicken wings, so I had to order something else. I wanted to leave, but it seemed rude to have sat down and then leave, so I ordered a different ramen.

Well anything nothing special about this cafe, so I don't think i will visit it next time.

Also the table next to me ordered something and I heard that the cafe changed something without changing on the menu, hence I think this cafe is slightly disorganized.

[Review 24] Not much variety @ 太子美食閣 Prince Deli

Date reviewed on openrice: 26/02/2006

Today I went for the $50 buffet as advertised on the magazine.
I was slightly disappointed with the choice, as it was fewer than featured in the magazine.

But anyway I decided to give it a try.

I was expecting a nice restaurant, as it is a subsidiary of Marco Polo, however it turned out to be an ordinary restaurant.

For the price of 50 dollars I suppose you cannot expect much, only the baked oyster was ok, the rest were very much ordinary, stuff that you can find in karaoke buffets, eg curry fish balls and turnip, jelly, spring rolls, chicken wings, sandwiches, sausages.
All of those items are just fried and the cakes were pretty ordinary too.

As for drink, they did have three choices which were unlimited refills: orange and mango juice, calamansi and lemon drink and passionfruit and mixed cocktail. Personally I tried the passion fruit one and it seem diluted.

[Review 23] Cheese Fondue @ The Spaghetti House 意粉屋

Date reviewed on openrice: 17/02/2006

I came here to try their cheese fondue, however it wasn't really the authentic fondue. I could taste the cheese fondue had been formulated by cheese, milk which made it not authentic and watery.

The dipping accompaniment for the fondue were also strange especially the shiitake mushroom which is Asian...so frankly I find it quite strange dipping that mushroom in the cheese. Also the meats were raw too.

To summarize, this is fake Fondue served in a Chinese way, just because cheese fondue is similar to a Chinese hot pot it dosnt mean you out raw meats in it.

[Review 22] Interesting sushi @ Meguro Sushi 目黑壽司

Date reviewed on openrice: 17/02/2006

I went to try this sushi restaurant because of the interesting sushi featured in the magazines, however when I got there, there were only a few that were different from the plain sushi's.

The best sushi, is the soft shell crab roll, and soft shell crab hand-roll which tastes nice with the Japanese mayonnaise.

Also their noodles are nice especially the "ramen from hell", which has a piece of fried salmon wing and spicy soup base. The kimchi beef rice is not bad either, very tasty and spicy.

[Reviews 21] Nice pizzas and Tortilla Rolls @ California Pizza Kitchen

Date Reviewed on openrice: 17/02/2006

This is another one of my favourite places to go for a pizza and other dishes.

Firstly they have some really good tasting pizzas:

Original BBQ chicken, which has nice red onions to compliment it.

Santa Fei Chicken, which has really nice sour cream and guacamole topping.

Roasted chicken and potato which is really yummy as this is the only place that do pizza with potato, just like a sunday roast!

Tuna Melt, which is a very delicous combination of tuna and red leicester cheese (orange coloured cheese).

My favourite appetizers involve Tuscan houmous and tortilla spring rolls.
The houmous recipe of cpk is slightly creamier than other recipes.
The tortilla spring roll is very tasty with the melted cheese inside with red onions, black beans and the lovely guacamole dip.
The flavour I ordered was:
BAJA CHICKEN
Grilled chicken breast, Jack and Cheddar cheeses, roasted corn, black beans, fire-roasted mild chilies, red onions, cilantro, and topped with Parmesan cheese. Served with guacamole.

Moving onto pasta my favourite are:
-Jambalaya-
Blackened chicken and shrimp in a spicy Jambalaya sauce with crawfish, Andouille sausage and Tasso ham served on linguini fini and topped with fresh scallions.

Portabello Mushroom Ravioli
Rosemary ravioli filled with Portobello mushrooms, herbs and cheese. Topped with imported Italian tomatoes, fresh basil and garlic or garlic-Parmesan cream sauce. Also available with saut嶪d Mushrooms.

Hmm I am very hungry now!!!

[Review 20] Flawless as commented by Gammacoupe @ The Swiss Chalet 瑞士餐廳

Date Reviewed on Openrice: 17/02/2006

First I would like to agree with the review written by Gammacoupe that is it virtually flawless.

Although it is expensive and the portions are slightly undersized for me, it is very delicous.

The best dish is the cheese fondue, although I am not fond of melted cheese, however the fondue here is great, their cheese do not give out a sickly smell. Also the bread to go with the fondue is great, same with the beef cubes which are succulent, tender and juicy.

I also tried their deer meat as well, which melted in my mouth.

All in all purrrrfect!!!

[Review 19] Good place for tea @ Wong Chun Chun Thai Restaurant 黃珍珍泰國菜館

Date reviewed on openrice: 16/02/2006

I have been to this restaurant many times for their afternoon menu sets.

I have tried the Pad Thai which is marvelous, other dishes I have tried include Green papaya salad and ginger fried rice with salted fish, The Green papaya salad is the best, everything is well mixed, especially the zesty lime juice.

The atmosphere is also good, not too crowded, the service is also good, as drinks are refilled with hot jasmine tea.

[Review 18] Best Indian curry so far @ Aladin Mess 阿拉丁咖喱屋

Date reviewed on openrice: 16/02/2006

This has to be the best authentic Indian curry in HK. The last time I had proper curry was in the East end of London.

Firstly the menu had all my favourite dishes.

Their rice was the proper indian long grained rice.

Anyway I ordered:

Sag Aloo (Spinach and Potatoes)
Tastes very nice, especially the potatoes and the spices used.
Bindi something (Okra -lady fingers)
Blended well with the onions and tomatoes.
Prawn korma
Very light and fluffy which went well with the rice and bread.
Pilau Rice
Naan
Nice chewy soft texture.
Salted Lassi
(quite nice)

[Review 17] Bad Service @ Marco Bistro

Date reviewed on Openrice: 16/02/2006

I only tried this restaurant because many magazines have featured good reviews on it.

When I got there, there was quite a long queue, so I was expecting good food.

When we finally sat down, we ordered cheese fondue, which was quite out of my expectation.
The reason being that the stuff for dipping in the cheese was raw, ie beef, salmon, chicken.
For traditional fondues the side dishes are cooked, ie beef, poultry etc. Firstly you cannot guarantee the meat can be cooked 100% by dipping in the cheese. Hence food poisoning.

Secondly after eating the main courses that I ordered. I had the chocolate fondue as well, so before I ordered I asked what fruits were in the fondue, the waitress answered strawberry, banana and she wasn't really sure. So when the fondue came, there were no strawberries, but just bananas, melons, and some other stuff.
I mean this is meant to be a high class innovative restaurant, yet their combinations do not really go together. Melon and chocolate are such a strange combination. I think their chef is not a high class chef, ie first serving raw stuff to go with the cheese fondue, then the strange fruit combination.
For chocolate fondues, it is normally berries, and bananas, and pieces of bread/cake that go with it.

Also I ordered dessert buffet which was unlimited eating, however the waitress was so rude, she wasn't pleased that we were eating more than average.

To summarize, a Chinese restaurant faking it was Western!

[Review 16] Brilliant Variety buffet @ CEO Neway

Date reviewed on Openrice: 16/02/2006

This is a very good place for satisfying needs for food and karaoke.

The food selection is good, they have a chocolate fountain for dessert fondues, and the best part is they have strawberries every time i go.

They always have fresh ideas, ie they have dar been lo during the winter, and poon choi. To me this is the best buffet place I have been too, so many things which I have not tried can be found here. For example crab congee with additional ginger and spring onions that you can add yourself.

I also liked the herb soup with black chicken, which was the first time i tried in my life, not only this, they had coconut and birds nest.

Their selection is so amazing they have a separate counter for pork/ham, and even a sushi bar.

AMAZING, TRULY AMAZING...THE BEST..SINCE U CAN BE ENTERTAINED THERE AS WELL....

[Review 14] Comparision to Pizza Express in England @ Pizza Express

Date Reviewed on Openrice: 16/02/2006

I have dined at Pizza Express many times before in the UK especially at the Stratford branch and Bluewater branch.

Hence when it opened, I did not hesitate to try it.

So I ordered:

Garlic Bread
Very delicious, but compared to England, it was cut into slices and had more garlic topped on it.

A Pizza which I cannot remember the name.
It was delicious.

Lasagne
Still very nice and a strong aroma of basil.
However in the UK, they did not have as much tomato puree surrounding the lasagne. There were more bechamel cheese in it.

Dessert
Cheese Platter with pieces of baked dough
Very delicious combination, if I am not wrong there were four cheeses consisting of: Cream cheese (Philadelphia spread taste), Camembert, cheddar and lastly the strong mature cheese.

Banana and Caramel pizza.
This was also very nice and not too sweet, the pizza base was good, topped with banana, almonds, caramel, and mascarpone soft cheese.
Originally I wanted to try the berries pizza, however one of the ingredients was Balsamic vinegar, which to me sounds like a strange combination for a dessert with strawberries and blueberries.

[Review 13] The standard has dropped @ 滇味雲南佳肴

Date reviewed on Openrice: 16/02/2006

When this noodle bar opened, the food was excellent especially the cold noodle with chicken and cucumber, it was a generous serving size.

The lunch set included a free drink, from the drinks list. There were various choices of teas, juices, sodas to choose from. The blueberry and banana smoothie was the best, however due to the changes in chefs, it has gotten too sweet.

The service is also deteriorating, and chaotic, once I sat in the upstairs, the air conditioner was blowing out black ashes.

[Review 11] ADVISED to sit in the SMOKING AREA @ G. Sushi 元綠壽司

Date Reviewed on Openrice: 14/02/2006

I walked into this restaurant, and the waiter asked us if we wanted to sit in the smoking/non smoking area.

I told her that we were non smokers, and she looked at the non-smoking area which was empty, and advised us to sit in the smoking area.

I believe the waiters wanted to group people in one area, so it would be easier to serve and take orders.

As I was allocated to a smoking area, when the non smoking area were vacant, I felt that I should not spend my money here due to their convenience.

Hence I walked out of the restaurant.

Date reviewed on Openrice: 14/02/2006

When this bakery/cafe opened, I thought great, finally there is a western style bakery here.

However when I tried their bakery, they were obviously trying to imitate the western bakery, but it tasted very Asian and sweet.

I have also tried their angel hair pasta with meat sauce, I found it rather tasteless.
Also spaghetti in broth, this is totally Chinese, you would not find this in Europe.

[Review 8] Cactus Juice @ Pokka Cafe

Date Published on Openrice: 11/02/2006

This is the second time I have been to Pokka Cafe, on my first visit I only had Hokkaido milkshake which was very nice, it was creamy and had the original taste.

On my second visit, my friend and I sat down for ages, we took a long time to decide what to order. However the service of the waiters were excellent, they kept refilling our water glass despite the fact we still havent ordered.

Anyway I finally ordered Toast with Duckliver Pate and a glass of Cactus Juice.
The way the Toast was served was interesting, the toast were just ordinary toast, but the pate and mushroom butter were served on a Chinese soup spoon.

General the dish was ok, perhaps the portion of the pate could be bigger, because I didnt think there was enough to spread all the toasts. The butter was interesting, with bits of mushroom in it.

Finally the cactus juice was quite nice. It was served in a small glass, with lots of froth, probably from being just whipped up from the machine. I imagined it to taste like Aloe Vera, due to the similarity in plant structure, however it tasted like wheatgerm grass with added apple juice. Overall its worth a try.

My friend ordered some ramen noodles, the presentation seems okay, ie plenty of meat, decent soup base, however cant comment on the taste as i did not try it.

As for the environment, it was quite comfortable and not too noisy.
